Six minutes after take-off from Honolulu, Flight 1421 has a fatal mechanical explosion and crashes into the ocean. Passengers and crew start a water evacuation only to find conditions are fatal due to the massive amount of jet fuel burning strongly in the water. Twelve passengers make a split second decision to quickly seal the plane and stay inside. Until the plane starts to sink....
WOW. Drowning opened with a (literal) bang and never let up until the last sentence! For once I actually let out a breath I didn't know I was holding multiple times (if you know, you know). This was a heart-racing, heart exploding, clear your calendar type read. It had it all -- action, drama, tears, a few chuckles. This book was so much more than an action movie with chapters. It was simply incredible. This author managed to create an amazing story, extremely likeable characters, massive heart palpitation moments, and tears?? Dang, I'll buy up everything you write!
A huge thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for approval of this ARC in exchange for my honest review. This book is not one to be missed!!!

My thanks to Avid Reader Press and NetGalley for an e-ARC of this book.
Minutes after taking off, Flight 1421 crashes into the ocean. When an engine explodes during evacuation, a dozen passengers close the doors and hope they survive - but the plane is flooding and sinking. Will and his daughter Shannon can only hope that Chris, his wife and her mom, uses her expertise to find a way to save them before it’s too late.
This is a strong follow-up to TJ Newman’s debut, and is even better in my opinion. With its high stakes and pulse pounding plot, this feels like an action movie put to paper.

I’m probably in the minority here considering the fanfare this book has been getting lately, but for me this was just ok. There wasn’t anything major wrong with it per se, it just didn’t wow me like I expected it to based upon the hype. Now, to be fair, that can be said about a lot of books-the more hype it gets, the more I end up disliking it. I did not dislike this book at all. I liked it. Didn’t love it.
Will is accompanying his daughter to camp when their flight goes down into the Pacific Ocean just minutes after take off. There are 99 passengers on the plane but only 12 of them survive the crash after it hits the water. They need to work together as the plane begins to sink beneath the surface.
Chris is a civil engineer who is super brilliant at working on aircraft and watercraft. She is working on a huge project when she gets word of the plane crash and immediately goes into action in order to try and save those on board in hopes that her daughter and ex-husband might still be alive.
The story is told from the POV of the survivors inside the aircraft trying to survive and Chris and the Navy, etc who are working to save them. There’s a lot of technical terminology and parts of it went over my head.
I could definitely see this becoming a movie.
Thanks to Avid Reader Press and NetGalley for this eArc in exchange for my review.

She’s done it again! I read this book in 4 hours. Couldn’t put it down. It’s a top notch, edge of your seat, tug at your heart blockbuster race against time. A place crashes intact and sinks with some survivors still on board, but they’re running out of oxygen and rescuers have to come up with a plan for a situation they’ve Never encountered before. Just as she did with “Falling” she makes you never want to step foot on a plane ever again. 🤣 It’s clear why there was such a crazy bidding war for the rights. It will make one hell of a tense movie. Read it!

Well, I won't say this was amazing because it was not. However, it was an improvement over this author's previous book "Falling". "Drowning" is quite short and fast paced and delivers on the tension of a rescue mission at the bottom of the ocean with little time left until the last survivors start dying like in "The Poseidon Adventure". There's a lot of predictable outcomes, cheesy dialogues and situations though the epilogue wasn't necessary in my opinion. Let's call it: a one-time enjoyable flight 😂 Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

This was a non stop, roller coaster, adrenaline ride of a novel. Just when you think the worst has happened, no, something even worse and shocking must happen to these characters.
This book is very much in the vein of an action, thriller movie and I often imagined myself 'watching' this story on the big screen. I did have moments of eye rolling when the main character and his estranged are the ONLY ones with solutions to everything, but it's expected to have to suspend disbelief in these type of stories.
Thank you @netgalley, @avidreaderpress, and @simon&schuster for an ARC of this novel. Book is out now!

Drowning, former flight attendant Newman’s follow-up to her 2021 #1 New York Times Bestseller Falling, is heart-pounding thriller that grabs you from page one and does not let up until the very last page. Six minutes after Flight 1421 takes off from Honolulu, the plane plummets into the ocean. As the passengers and crew work to evacuate the aircraft, an engine explodes, and the plane begins to flood. Those still inside the plane are forced to abandon the evacuation and attempt to seal themselves inside the plane and hope it will float until they can be rescued. But it is too late and the plane sinks to the bottom with twelve passengers still inside. Drowning is a can’t-put-down thriller, perfect to toss in your pool or beach bag this summer, but you may not want to read it while flying!

Thank you to NetGalley and Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster for providing me with a copy to read and review.
While on the surface it’s an insanely outrageous plot, it’s such an entertaining ride, that that can be overlooked. It has vibes of The Poseidon Adventure and a great group of characters working together for a common goal.
The intense moments were described well and they made me anxious at times.
Such a fun read, but maybe not while on an airplane.

Drowning by TJ Newman is a fast-paced survival suspense novel following the rescue of passengers from a downed airplane in the ocean off one of the Hawaiian islands. The author’s experience as a former flight attendant lends authenticity to the book and her research adds some credibility to the outlandish science behind characters surviving in the body of a plane under water. The book’s plot moves along at a clip with many twists and turns as the characters await rescue. I do think characterization took a backseat to the plot’s pace as beyond a couple main characters, the rest of the cast felt mostly like generic character types (old couple, jerk white guy, flight attendant) and not like fully fleshed out characters. Thus I didn’t really care when certain ones died.
Overall though, I really enjoyed the reading experience and I flew through the book in just a couple days. It is a perfect summer vacation read - just proceed with caution if you have to fly on a plane to your destination. It might be a little too anxiety-inducing for reading on a flight.

4.5 stars rounded up!
Six minutes after taking off, Flight 1421 crashes into the Pacific Ocean. As passengers begin fleeing into the water, an engine explodes, causing 12 people to lock themselves into the plane, their only form of safety. However, soon after, the plane sinks into the ocean and any hope for rescue begins to diminish.
DROWNING by T.J. Newman had me sobbing from the first chapter. Much like Newman’s debut FALLING, I fell in love with the characters and spent a lot of time laughing and crying over their interactions.
Her experience as a flight attendant is apparent, though I will say all of the technical jargon did lead to me docking half a star.
This one was fast-paced, kept me up way past my bedtime in order to finish it, and was just an intensely quick read!
The overall storyline was predictable at times, but that made it easier for me to digest and kept my stress levels at a more moderate level 😅
Huge thanks to NetGalley and Avid Reader Press for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This book is OUT NOW!

Alright I did think this was somehow a sequel to Falling based on the cover, so I was initially a little confused. Drowning is such a good story! From the moment I started it I couldn’t put it down. I absolutely hate water and planes, so this book was a little anxiety inducing, but a really great nonetheless!

3.5 rounded up. A quick, claustrophobic disaster tale….even better (in my opinion) than the author’s first novel. I’m in it for the action, as opposed to the emotional subplots, so the wrap up was a little sappy for me. Still, a solid followup to the debut success.

TJ is a genius and I will now read whatever she writes. It was read in one sitting gripping. It had the right amount of characters where it felt like a full cast, but not like there was too many. Truly. So. Good.

Oh my goodness! This book was amazing! I don't think I have ever had a book hook me from the first sentence like this one did. T.J. Newman is a Rockstar!
Drowning is an action packed immersive experience. I felt like I was there (which is scary) since its a plane crash in the ocean. The characters were amazing and the build up was spot on. My favorite character was Chris! She is a badass and I loved her take charge attitude. I could definitely can relate with her mama bear instincts to save her daughter and husband.
This book I think is my new favorite of the year. I cannot stop thinking about it and all I wanted to do was come home from work to read it! Thank you netgalley and Avid Reader Press for the ARC!

Much like Falling, Drowning takes us on an adventure we hope to never experience! The action starts on page 1 and is non stop. I enjoyed this very plot driven novel but it was overall just okay. I do think it’s important to know this is a popcorn kind of book. You’ll likely want to keep reading and want to see how it all unfolds, but just keep in mind it’s very movie like and suspend your disbelief while reading. Thanks to NetGalley for the arc.

Oh my, many thanks to NetGalley and Avid Press/Simon & Schuster for this advance copy of Drowning, the follow up to T.J. Newman’s amazing debut. This one came out on Tuesday 5/30/23 and it’s a fast-paced thriller!
Unsurprisingly, this book is the type of book you can read in one sitting. This book starts off with a plane crashing into water off the coast of Hawaii, and we meet Dad and daughter duo Will and Shannon. Later in the works we meet Chris, Shannon’s mom and Will’s estranged wife, who happens to be a rescue diver in private practice. This one is SO fast paced - I literally felt like I was racing to see what happens next. I will say, this one is very technical, and some of it went a bit over my head with some of the airline and diving lingo, but it was easy enough to follow along. Newman has officially become an auto-buy author for me.
Thank you so much for destroying my gut with this one, NetGalley and the publishing team - go pick this one up if you love a heart racing thriller!

Readers beware! Block out enough time to finish this in one sitting or be left counting down the minutes until you can get back to it! Drowning had me at the edge of my seat for the entire ride. I felt stressed (but in a good way) trying to figure out how these characters were going to survive one problem after another. I was really impressed with the way the author reeled me in and kept me engaged for the entire time I was reading. I also enjoyed the characters and the look into a few of their lives. Drowning gives you everything you could ever want in a thriller and leaves you hoping you’ll be able to see it on the big screen one day. I highly recommend this to all you thriller lovers out there!
Special thanks to NetGalley and Avid Reader Press/Simon and Schuster for the Adanced Reader Copy of Drowning. I thoroughly enjoyed

Imagine being on a plane and only minutes into your flight you find yourself crashing into the ocean. That's the premise behind T.J. Newman's new book; Drowning. I started reading this in the morning and had I not had things that I absolutely needed to get done I would have read it straight through, As it is, it is now just after 1 am and I have just finished it. I was not going to sleep before I finished this book. Wow. I loved this book. This is an incredible thriller. Newman doesn't mess around. She throws you into the action from page one and just keeps ratcheting up the tension/intensity. Loved her writing style. She creates characters you will care about and writes with an authority that makes you completely believe the incredible situations she's putting those characters through. This is a perfect beach read. If you are looking for a thriller I can't recommend this one enough.

THIS IS HOW YOU WRITE A BOOK!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I just thought Falling was good. This book was incredible! I wanted to vomit after reading the first chapter. Anxiety and all the tears, just wow! I didn’t want to put it down. Thank you NetGalley and Avid Reader Press for the ARC.

DROWNING is Newman’s sophomore novel about flight 1412 which crashes into the ocean. The surviving passengers have to make a decision: stay on the plane and hope for rescue or evacuate and hope to survive?!
This is another fast-paced, heart pounding thriller from Newman! I was not expecting the plane to immediately crash. TALK ABOUT ACTION! I just had to keep turning the pages to see what would happen next. I loved how a dad and daughter duo were on the plane together while the mom is fighting for their safe return home as a professional diver. I didn’t predict the end and trust me it was a good one! I highly recommend picking this one up ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ stars!
Thank you so much @netgalley @avidreaderpress @tj_author for my gifted copy ✈️💙
