Unfortunately, I could not get into this book at all. I normally read Contemporary Romance, I don't read much Historical Romance besides Julia Quinn so I take full responsibility that maybe I don't understand the genre well enough. But I found this to be a really tough read. There's no joy in this book what-so-ever, at least not through the end of chapter 5 where I chose to stop. I didn't smile once, and I couldn't feel invested in the characters.

Lydia says she only stutters when she's nervous but she does it even in the prologue (why is it a prologue? There's no significant time difference and it doesn't give us any more exposition than a normal chapter) when surrounded by familiar people. That, along with the Romany words (for which I had to keep flipping back and forth to look up because they're not well-placed with context clues, and not all the words are in the glossary, like "Patrin" ) made it so cumbersome to read. I feel greatly for a heroine with a stutter because several of my close friends and family deal with stutters and other speech impediments, but that doesn't make it easy to read. The hero has far too many names and I could not keep track of what he's supposed to be called. Also, is Lady Davenport "Liza" or "Eliza" because she's called both and it's unnecessary.

I really wanted to like this book, but I just didn't so I DNF at about 20%. I am only including a star rating because it's required, I don't normally rate DNF books but I think this feedback could be important.
