A family receives an invitation to meet at a house in a remote area. One of the daughters, Meghan, was killed by her boyfriend, Cal, ten years ago. The family has been shattered since. The parents, Maureen and Paul, have since divorced. Paul has remarried Rebecca. Maureen and Paul's other two daughters, Sam and Alice have also been invited, as well as Geoff, a friend of the family and Cal.

The invite tells them that they will finally have all the answers to their questions about the night Meghan died. The family believes that Cal killed Meghan and he has served ten years in prison for the crime. Cal has recently been released and he has professed his innocence.

As it happens, there is a storm the night they are supposed to meet. Geoff and Cal crash into each other and Cal is seriously injured. The family must now decide what to do. Although cut off from all communication, should they try to help Cal as much as they can, or should they leave him to die, like he did Meghan.

I think we all have thought at one time or another what our reaction would be if someone were to hurt one of our loved ones. This family is placed exactly in that position. There are many other developments that take place over the night that has the family questioning what they think they knew.

A locked room mystery with a room full of unlikable characters.. the story had some nice twists but I wish at least a few of the characters had some redeeming qualities !

One Night starts off with Meghan getting murdered. No one really knows what happened to her that night. Her ex-boyfriend Cal is charged with her murder. Ten years after the murder Meghan's family gets a letter telling them where to meet, to find out the truth of what really happened to Meghan. Soon Cal shows up and the family is wondering if he invited them. They find Cal unconscious and a storm is raging outside so the family decides to care for him. They are hoping they will find out the truth. But that is easier said than done.

Georgina Cross is such a hit-or-miss author for me. Nanny Needed was the first book of hers I read. That book was so wild and I loved it. That made me want to read more books by her. This is the fourth book I have read by her and I thought it was just okay. It was your average run-of-the-mill thriller which is totally fine. But I just wish it was better. I do not like when books switch from the past to the present and this book did that. I felt like this book was very slow paced which is also something I did not like. This was just not my favorite book. I do not think I would suggest this one. However, I will suggest this author.

🪨 BOOK / REVIEW 🌧

It has been way too long since I read a book by @georginacrossauthor 😭 I was lucky to grab a copy of her newest novel #onenight thanks to @blondethrillerbooklover from @thrillerbookloverspromotions, who was kind enough to coordinate a #buddyread for this.

I was only supposed to read up til chapter 11 for the first week, but I could not put this down! This book was so atmospheric - I almost wish it were raining in Pittsburgh when I read it so the mood would set. That being said, I had a lot of fun reading this! Its very fast paced, with highly engaging chapters and a nice mix of characters.

I truly enjoyed the ending - there are definitely some moments in the book that have you questioning Meg's killer, but I have to say that the reveal was bigger than I thought.

This would be an excellent summer read or perfect for fall / winter if you're in the mood for something creepy and thrilling. Pub day for this one is August 1st, 2023 (thanks @bantambooksuk and @netgalley for my #ARC).

For me, this was a slightly less enjoyable version of Daisy Darker (locked room suspense with a somewhat toxic family trapped with each other).

I'm sure many of you are like "WHAT: how is that possible??" but I found it less plausible.

A family (mother, father with his new girlfriend, two sisters, and ex boyfriend) of a girl found dead ten years ago are all invited by anonymous invitation to a remote cabin by (they presume) the victim's ex boyfriend, who was accused of her murder.

And they show up!

If you love a good locked room family suspense story in the vein of Daisy or Knives Out, this one is for you!

The premise of this book was so promising and I was excited for it. However, I felt like it fell short of what I was expecting.

The ending is predictable and I wish I could have enjoyed the writing style more. Just not for me.
Lots of others seem to enjoy it though so it’s probably just me!

Family drama- sign me up!

Meghan is murdered when she is 17 years old and 10 years later, after the suspect- her high school boyfriend “Cal”- is released from prison her family is invited to a home to learn the “truth” about her death.

As we get to learn everyone -there’s quite a few- we also learn that this family has lots of secrets. They are all suspicious of each other and start to point fingers which definitely keeps you guessing.

Even with guessing part of the twist, i truly enjoyed the book and sped through it. I enjoyed the writing, the author knows how to draw in the reader and keep you interested. This is my first but look forward to reading more from Georgina Cross.

Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Random House for this ARC

What would you do if you got a creepy letter telling you to come to a location and you'll get answers on someone you love's murder? This is exactly what happened to Meghan's family. Meghan was murdered 10 years ago. The family thought they sent the killer to prison, he's out now, and the whole time claimed he's innocent. While trapped in a house, due to an awful storm, the family tries to piece together what happened. Will the person who sent the letters tell them the truth?

I am a sucker for multiple POVs. I really like how these were done and the current and past timelines. It was a fast paced mystery. It kind of reminded me of Clue. I've decided I really liked locked room thrillers. They just give off that creepy vibe. I did guess part of the twist early on in the book, but I enjoyed watching it unfold.

This was a great read. The cover really draws the reader in and I loved the setting and characters. I really felt like I was in the story. It was phenomenal.

Hard book to review. On the positive side, it seduced me into continuous reading to learn more about the numerous mysteries that kept arising. So, in that respect alone, it would probably be 5 stars.

However, it moved way too slowly for my liking. This is the story of a family who lost a daughter ten years ago, most likely to foul play. Her boyfriend served ten years in prison for the offense. Only a couple of people in Meghan's family believe there's a possibility of his innocence. Her mother wants to see him dead. Each member of the family (and who knows how many others) received identical invitations to a dinner party, where they expected to learn more about Meg's death. By the time I got to 25%, I felt that it should have been, at least, 75%. Yes, so much time was spent just wondering why they were there and were there more coming, etc. By 50% I was ready for it to be over, but there were even more mysteries that had surfaced.

From other reviews, I might want to try "Nanny Needed" (after I check the reviews for language).

Because the profanity in this one made me cringe throughout!

Guess I'll be generous and give it 4****.

Really enjoyed this thriller. Every time I thought I had something figured out, there would be a new twist. Highly recommend if you like to be on the edge of your seat and can't wait to turn the page to find out what happens next.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for advanced copy, and I give my review freely

The synopsis for One Night intrigued me from the first sentence. This was a slow build that for me, felt a little to slow. Maureen was one of those characters I couldn't stand almost from the beginning! Her emotions were extreme (they were justified given what she had been through and what she believed) but they made her unstable and unreliable in my opinion. After the slower pace of the book, the ending came on fast and strong, so much happened, and was revealed in such a short amount of time that it felt a little rushed and left me with some follow up questions. This was my first Georgina Cross book and overall it was was a quick and easy read that kept my attention for the most part (I did skim a little), even though it was an "ok" read for me, I'd certainly grab another book by Georgina Cross.

Quick and easy read with short chapters and alternating POV’s. Although I guessed the twists, I still enjoyed the book!

'One Night' by Georgina Cross is a locked-room thriller about a family that gets invited to a secluded beach house in the picturesque Oregon Coast by an anonymous person ten years after (their daughter/sister/niece) Meghan's murder. To find out the truth about what happened on the night of Meghan's murder, they are to meet at the location and are not to tell anyone that they have been invited or where they are going to be.

As the family trickles in, and a storm starts to brew, they explore the house for clues on who invited them. In the dining room, they find a table set for a dinner party, where there are place cards for each of the family members except at the head of the table. They assume its saved for their host, possibly Cal, Meghan's ex-boyfriend and murderer.

Cal is discovered injured and unconscious in his truck near the beach house. After Cal is brought to the house, half the family wants to keep him alive to find out why he brought them there, while the other half wants to let him die for murdering Meghan.

As the family members debate on what to do with Cal, I found myself predicting most of the twists. The book started off on a high for me, with its atmospheric setting and intriguing premise, but slowed down to a lull in the middle. The book lingered on the most unlikeable characters, but I still kept reading because I really did want to know what happened to Meghan. The writing is done in short sentences making this book easy to breeze through. And the twists at the end were exactly what I thought they would be.

Thank you to Random House Publishing, Ballantine and NetGalley for the eARC for my honest review.

Wow! What a thriller! Meghan is murdered and 10 years later her family gets letters in the mail saying if your want to know what happened to Meghan, come to a home on the Oregon coast. Cal was convicted of Meghan's murder but he only serves 10 years in prison. Did Cal send the letters? The family finds Cal unconscious after a crash into a tree because of a storm. They take him back to the house with them. Did Cal murder Meghan? Did one of the family members in the house kill her? This was a great thriller that kept me guessing until the end. I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.

First time author for me. All I can say about this book is it was a fantastic book. The twist and turns were great and it definitely held my attention. I can never guess who done it. But boy you got to read this book.

I thought Cross's book NANNY NEEDED was a fun and crazy read, so I was excited for this one. The beginning was really good but then it slowed down a bit. The premise sounded so good so I continued and I'm happy I did because I was on the edge of my seat the last half. I think people who enjoy a locked room mystery would definitely enjoy this. It was suspenseful and entertaining.

Meghan drowned 10 years ago and her boyfriend, Cal, was the one who served 10 years for it. Now her family is gathering after receiving anonymous letters saying if they want to know what happened to Meghan, meet at this and they will find out the truth. Then a storm hits and they're stranded…..but they're also stranded with Meghan's boyfriend Cal,who was in a car accident by the house they're at. What will happen when Cal wakes up? Does he know what really happened? Is it someone in Meghan's family that's already there in the room?

Out Aug 1.

Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own. My review will be posted on Instagram, Bookbub, Goodreads and Amazon once it publishes.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the Kindle ARC. One Night is a thriller with plenty of twists and turns. Following the release from prison of Cal, convicted killer of Meghan ten years ago, Meghan's family receives an invitation to a remote beach house to find out what really happened the night she died. Plenty of twists and turns and the real murderer is hiding in plain sight.
