Meghan’s family is promised answers as to what happened when she was murdered ten years ago. Each family member receives a letter inviting them to a cliffside home in Oregon. They know that Meghan’s boyfriend, Cal, was just released from prison. He served ten years for killing her, but maintained his innocence. The family thinks Cal has invited them on this night, but he is found unconscious in his car, slammed into a light pole near the house. Is Cal really the killer or has someone elses invited them, and if so what is their motive?

This was a fast-paced, locked room thriller. Told over the course of this one night, readers see what really happened to Meghan through flashbacks of the night of her death. The atmosphere also played a huge part in the story; everyone together in this one house, not knowing who invited them there or what their intentions were, a storm raging outside, and tension between the family and Cal. Then there’s the fact that if Cal wakes up, what will he tell them? This story had me on the edge of my seat and while I had some suspicions I did not guess the the twist and how it was going to play out.
When I saw Brittany Presley was narrating, I had to grab the audio too, as she is one of my favorites! He and Kirby Heyborne perfectly brought the characters to life.

“One Night” releases August 1, 2023! This review be shared to my instagram blog (@books_by_the_bottle) shortly.

After reading this book, I came to one conclusion, the Chishoms family has issues!!
On the surface, other than suffering grief from the loss of their daughter Meghan ten years ago, they seem fairly normal. But all the things the family has kept hidden from others come to light one night when they are brought together with the promise that they will find out what really happened to Meg.

Told from multiple POVs, we learn about Meg's death and how her ex-boyfriend, Cal, was charged with the crime. But was he actually innocent? The more I learned about each family member, the less I trusted them. And I had to wonder, did one of the family members invite them to this house or was there a third party involved who knew the truth?

With all the POVs, the direction of the story was a bit all over the place at times - shifting from the storm that has trapped them, to past events that changed family dynamics, to what to do with Cal, who is bleeding out in their house from a random accident.

The most interesting part of the story takes place in the last 10% or so when two POVs share what really happened ten years ago. I had my suspicions about both characters but never would have guessed what they did and why.

Although I think this book could have been edited to eliminate the disjointed parts, the mystery was intriguing and kept me engaged. Overall, a good read if you are a fan of this genre.

“One Night” is the newest thriller by Georgia Cross. Ten years after their daughter is murderer, a family gets a note telling them to meet at an isolated house on the coast of Oregon if they want to know the truth of what really happened the night of the murder. The whole family is expecting Cal (the ex-boyfriend sent to prison for the murder) to show up, but he is found unconscious near the house. Should the family let him die? Or will they help try to keep him alive so that he’s able to regain consciousness and share the real story of how Meghan was killed?

This is the first book by Georgina Cross that I’ve read but I would happily go back and read her other stories. I enjoyed the pacing of this book a lot. I loved the remote setting this story definitely had a ‘locked room’ feel to it because of the storm.

As always thank you to NetGalley and Bantam for the DRC of this novel! “One Night” will be published on August 1st, 2023

I loved a locked room kind of mystery. I was skeptical about the premise but I couldn’t resist giving it a try. And what a joy it was. Tense, good amount of backstory and character building, lots of clues but also a few misdirects.

I got the sense of where it was going from the past memories. But I enjoyed the suspense watching it all unfold and getting to see if I was correct.

Thank you for the ARC of One Night. Loved the premise and the suspense of who wrote the letters and brought them all to the house. I did feel like the ending was a bit chaotic. But what a great twist at the end!

ONE NIGHT was one wild ride!

Georgina knows how to set the scene. This atmospheric novel draws you in from the start. Trapped in a luxury cabin-esque home on the Oregon coast, where a storm’s raging, a tortured family tries to figure out why they've received an invitation and what information they might gain about a tragedy ten years prior.

Drip by drip, the story unfolds, suspicion builds, and secrets are revealed, and this family has a lot of them. The reader will find themselves racing to the end, desperate for the conclusion.

The table’s set, the place cards are written, and there’s one with your name on it.

My armchair detective skills failed me on this one. I could not figure out who killed Meghan. So many clever twists.

There are many points of view in this locked room thriller. With a storm raging outside, the family has one night to get to the truth about who killed their oldest daughter/sister.

This is a fast paced story that I had trouble putting down. I give it 4 stars and highly recommend it to fans of mystery and thriller books. Thank you, NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for the ARC.

This book started out so strong, I was instantly hooked and couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen at the dinner party. The creepy, trapped atmosphere was so fun to read about and I had to know what was going to happen! The story slowed down a bit in the middle but I loved the ending and thought this was a wonderfully suspenseful thriller!

This ended up being a much better than expected page turner.

As the book starts, you soon realize that a) you don’t like very many of the characters and b) you have a pretty good idea of why certain things happened.

I can tell you that you’re almost right. Most of the characters have issues and the reason behind everything is *almost* what you think it is.

Despite some of the predictability, it’s an entertaining and suspenseful read – especially when the storm comes and things start getting weird!

In the end, I enjoyed it and found that what the author does with some of the characters was both devious and delightful.

One Night by Georgina Cross has one of the scariest twisted families I’ve ever come across reading.
The who-done-it in the storyline seems to point at the young teen boyfriend…or does it?
This is one storyline that I did not figure out until until the end!
I love it when the story throws everyone under suspicion until right at the end.
Definitely a great story.

This books sounds like everything I wanted. Come to this location on the Oregon Coast if you want to know who murdered your daughter. Honestly, I had a hard time with this book. It just didn’t keep my interest. I will try again as it is so highly rated.

Alternating between tense and heartrending, ONE NIGHT had me hooked from the start. The rugged seclusion of the Oregon Coast provides the perfect backdrop for the dangerous revelations that come to light in this engrossing thriller that follows the Chisholm family, still traumatized by the murder of one of their own, and their unique opportunity to confront and punish the supposed killer. The locked room mystery-obsessed will appreciate Georgina Cross's atmospheric, Agatha Christie-esque setting, while fans of domestic suspense will enjoy the complex family dynamics. This is my favorite Georgina Cross novel yet!

Although the concept is good, the story felt disorganized and it took a while for anything to actually happen. I liked the setting and some of the twists but I didn’t feel they were earned, partly because the characters felt underdeveloped.

Ten years had passed since Cal was found guilty of manslaughter in the killing of his girlfriend, Meghan. He always claimed he was not guilty. He is released from prison and all in the family receive an invitation to spend a night in a beautiful home on the ocean, and the whole truth is to be revealed.
This book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I read it almost straight through. I do not want to give away any spoilers, but I will say that things are not as you would expect them to be. This was a great thriller of a book.

Thank you NetGalley and Bantam books for this early read.

2.5⭐️

Ten years ago, Meghan was killed. The oldest of three girls, she was the light of her parents life but her death tore their family apart. Her ex boyfriend, Cal, was convicted for her murder but got, in Maureen’s opinion, a laughably short ten year sentence. And now he is out, walking free while her daughter is dead.

The anonymous letters start arriving to each of the family stating the same thing: if you want to know what happened to Meghan, come to this location. And after one night the truth will be known. Trapped at a secluded cabin in a storm, the family soon learns that not everything they believed to be true is real.

This had an interesting premise but I’m not sure the execution pulled it off. It was also pretty predictable and I was able to guess the twist very early on in the story. While the title is correct and everything was revealed in one night, the story was very much a slow build with many repetitive lull’s throughout the way.

Thanks Netgalley for providing this ARC to me!

One night, Meghan Chisholm’s family is invited to attend a reunion of sorts. They are summoned together via anonymous invitation on the 10th anniversary of her drowning. Also invited is Cal, Meghan’s boyfriend, who did time for manslaughter in the wake of her death. Some blame him, some aren’t so sure. But if Cal didn’t do it, who did? Could it be one of the other attendees? And who sent those invitations? This who-done-it sets the stage with clues, intrigue, plenty of unanswered questions and even a dark and stormy night! It's a mystery solver's dream. Happy sleuthing!

One Night
by Georgina Cross
Pub Date: 01 Aug 2023

One Night is about family secrets, betrayal, and revenge with everyone under a cloud of suspicion. It was absolutely fantastic. This story starts off with so much suspense and keeps going until the very end. The characters are easy to keep up with. There are a lot of red herring's! I would recommend this book for people who enjoy a good thriller and something a little darker.

Short Synopsis:

One night. That's all the time a family has to decide what to do with the man they believe murdered their daughter: Do they forgive him, or take justice into their own hands? In one night, you'll find out everything you need to know.
