I am working on learning hand lettering for my decorative planner and journal. This book not only teaches you how to do letters but phrases. Great for practical samples of when and how to use the knowledge. I love that it had multiple fonts to practice. Would it come with more practice pages?

This book was extremely beautiful and had lots of details regarding calligraphy. Ultimately as a total beginner, it was a tad overwhelming for someone learning. I loved the tips, but I was too new to jump in straight away.

Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for this arc in exchange for an honest review.

I've tried a few calligraphy books because I do some crafting and want to improve my lettering. This is one of the best ones I've read. The objective of this book is to give step by step instructions for using brush pens to create and customize your own craft projects.

The book starts off with the basics, giving tips on the best posture to have while writing and how best to hold the pen. Next, it discusses assorted styles of calligraphy and then has guide sheets to help you practice each lettering style. Then, it gives examples and ideas for different DIY calligraphy projects such as signs, wedding invitations, and even a ribbon for a bouquet of flowers.

It was a thorough, and thoroughly enjoyable, "how to" for modern calligraphy. Thank you to NetGalley and Stackpole Books for the advance review copy of the book. I enjoyed reading it.

Brush Pen Calligraphy is full of super aesthetically pleasing photos that showcase different ways to use calligraphy in your every day life from gifts to invitations. After establishing possible why's, this book jumps straight into different calligraphy fonts and how to achieve them using suggested materials. This book is complete with a set up suggestion and a page that focuses on individual brush strokes.
This book seems so useful and thorough in teaching calligraphy and emphasizing that it is not as easy as the online videos make it seem. By including practice pages this book is emphasizing the importance of practice which is amazing.
Overall I think this is a great book for beginners looking to learn brush pen calligraphy from picking up the pen for the first time until learning to put their own twist on it.

Some of the letters are stylized more than others and perhaps why the author encourages trying direction differences. The guide section is considerably shorter than other tutorials, but it can be replicated independently. I liked that the author also emphasizes different tools for different results. Although six different styles are represented, they are close with limited differences. I found the casual style most simple and combining multiple styles the most fun and in keeping with modern brush lettering. The photos are smaller than expected, although I appreciated the section on pen holding. Instructing using this medium is complex and may be more suited for reference.

What a great resource! I’ve been dying to take a Brush Calligraphy class but the timing just hasn’t worked. This was a perfect solution until I can be in-person.
Th book walks you through everything from selecting a pen to using your newfound skills in practical and decorative projects. I loved the part about adding decoration and instructions for gradient colors.
My only complain is that I am left-handed and this didn’t address that at all. It seems like a minor detail, but remember that the position of the brush is the opposite . And one issue that lefties have with ink of any kind is that it smears. So, while I’m excited to put my newfound skills to the test, I’m fearful of the results being disappointing.
Because this is an e-ARC, I didn’t have the advantage of the practice pages, which would have been great.
Overall, I’d purchase this book and probably consider it as a gift for crafty friends because the illustrations are lovely and the array of applications is endless.
Thank you to NetGalley and Stackpole Books for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest opinions.

Since I like to add handwriting to book page covered canvases I was hoping to get this book to review and put what I learn into practice. BRUSH PEN CALLIGRAPHY by Hamane Higashi.

This book takes you through every step you need in order to start doing calligraphy yourself. It shows you how to properly make the letters and numbers, in several font options, and includes a lot of pages for you to practice on. There’s also tips on how to hold the brush pen and how to sit to give you the best outcome. It gives layout tips so your work will come out beautifully. 5 stars!!

At first it seemed this book was just teaching basic cursive but then I remembered that a lot of people never were taught that skill so it is a good thing to start with. It’s more informative that that though and gives great advice for anyone wanting to further their calligraphy skills.

Thanks to NetGalley, Rowman & Littlefield, and Stackpole Books for allowing me to review this wonderful book.

What a great book for anyone wanting to learn lettering and calligraphy. This book walks you through the basic steps but then also gives you lessons how to take those steps to the next level. There is room in the book to work on the exercises or you could just copy and have extras to practice. Well done book and would be wonderful gift for yourself or someone wanting to learn the craft of lettering.
