Set in 1896 Edinburgh, His Fatal Legacy is dark and atmospheric with Gothic elements which in the blurb sounds like perfection. Amy Alardyce is remarried to a man she loves and she is smitten with her children. All but one, her eldest son Robert who in his teens has already lived many lifetimes of worldly experiences, treats most women abysmally and flaunts his wealth. Though outwardly happy, Amy's son's dark secrets niggle away at her so she is rarely truly at peace. A dark generational thread runs through a few males in the family and when women in Edinburgh are stalked and attacked some wonder whether Robert is the culprit. Robert's stepfather seeks help for his wicked stepson as lives may be in danger, including those close to home. Robert's new sixteen-year-old wife Jane is sweet, kind and naive and in the throes of newlywed happiness, adored by her attentive husband. She is blissfully oblivious to his past and he is the greatest of actors.

Though the dark atmosphere and wonderful Edinburgh setting are beautifully written, it was challenging for me to become fully invested in the story due to the unconvincing characters I did not care enough about. Some are despicable which to me can really add but for some inexplicable reason didn't here.

My sincere thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for providing me with an early digital copy of this dark novel, part of the Alardyce series.

2.75/5 stars! Set in the late 1800s, this is a dark thriller where a serial killer may be on the loose and he may be living in your very own home. The main character has to confront the fact that her son may be a killer and decide whether to turn him in or hide his crimes. The premise was interesting but I didn't really connect with the story. The characters felt 2-dimensional which made it hard to root for anyone. Not a bad book for gothic readers, but not on par with what I'm looking for.

This novel was a big disappointment from the get-go. I found the writing rather stale, the characters very boring and the plot totally implausible. I managed to finish it but unfortunately I cannot recommend it at all.

Many thanks to Boldwood and Netgalley for this ARC

This book was absolutely amazing. From page one I was hooked and I couldn't wait to find out what happened next mixed with I didn't want it to end. This was the best book!

I really had problems to reach the end of this book! However, I wanted to write an honest review so I did finish it. I found the characters too thinly defined. I couldn't feel any empathy for their feelings and acceptance towards Robert, a murderer. Too flatly described, their relationship felt hardly credible. Overall too much telling as opposed to showing. To me, the plot also fell flat and I was not gripped by any tension.
I received a complimentary ARC of this novel from NetGalley and I am leaving voluntarily an honest review.

"Edinburgh 1896

Amy Alardyce's once-perfect life is in tatters. Her eldest son, Robert, has come of age, become the master of his own home, and married his childhood love Jane. But with maturity has come a terrible legacy, and the dark desires Robert inherited from his evil father Matthew, are fighting to get loose.

Whilst Jane is working hard to get her and Robert accepted into fashionable society, poor women are being hunted on the streets of Edinburgh, and Amy fears her son is to blame. And once the infamous Inspector Murphy takes up the case, Amy has to face a stark choice - denounce her son as a monster or risk her own safety to protect him from the consequences of his lethal actions.

If you love Emily Organ, Kate Saunders and Ann Granger, you'll love the Alardyce series. Discover bestselling author Heather Atkinson and you'll never look back...

Please note this is an updated version of the previously published Ancestral Tides."

Could there be a serial killer in the family?

His fatal legacy is the third book in the allerdyce series.
robert is now married to his childhood sweetheart jane he should be very happy.
His dark side is becoming more evident and his evil compulsions are harder to control.
Will his love for jane redeem him his mum amy wants to save her son from his demons and the hangmans noose.
This is a dark gothic tale that is fast paced thrilling and a rollercoaster of a read it leaves you rooting for all the characters concerned for a happy ending.
Heather atkinson is a first class writer of all genres .
Highly reccommended you wont be disapointed.
