The Black Swan’s author Nassim Nicholas Taleb with his theory of how to predict the future and translate it into big market returns is at the center of this book. Taleb’s view is that extreme events he calls Black Swans are inescapable and humans will always be caught unawares; he builds his investment strategies based on that assumption creating “optimal strategy to cash in on crashes while limiting losses.” The hedge fund he and his friend founded thrives on "chaos in the markets.” The opposing view represented in the book by French mathematician Didier Sornette who thinks that these predictable catastrophes he calls Dragon Kings can be analyzed with the help of math formulas. The author’s ability to explain complex financial concepts in a way that even a layperson will understand makes this book a page-turner. It is fascinating to learn about how these mad geniuses’ minds work. Although some of their worldviews can sound outright scary, the book makes for a fascinating reading. Great choice for the fans of Michael Lewis and those who are interested in investments.
