I enjoyed this thriller set on a remote island with dark secrets to unravel. A slow start that progressed to an exciting conclusion. There were some questions remaining, but on the whole this was a quick entertaining read and I can see it doing well as one to pick up off the shelf in the airport for a great holiday read. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the e advance review copy.

After some wrong-doings which cause problems with their families, Fiona and Neil move to a little island in the North Sea called Winters End.

Still trying to get themselves back on track, Fiona finds it hard to start again. She soon notices something isn’t right on the island. Where are all the women? Why are so many young women buried on the island?

Neil appears so laid back that he doesn’t seem to care about Fiona’s worries and concerns. Why have the locals seemed to take a dislike to Fiona and who is trying to get them to leave the island?

Goodness me, I found this book to be a bit on the creepy side! The story is dark and intense, with the swirling fog and cliff edge featuring quite heavily in the story, it gave the book an eerie feel to it.

This is a well written story and the author wrote interesting characters, the majority of whom were hard to like at all.

A powerful read that had me gripped from the first page to the last.

My thanks to Boldwood Books, the author and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.

What a thrilling book filled with tension, a deep and unsettling sense of foreboding accentuated by skilllful foreshadowing and palpable , edge of the seat expectancy fuelled by evocative descriptions of the harsh, inclement terrain of the secluded island Winters End.
With the need for anonymity, a chance to lick their wounds in private, reinvent themselves and recover from the climactic crime that brought them to the island, Fiona and Neil are desperate to fit in and to make the island - so unlike their previous home - their sanctuary.
Well, just so you know from the outset - that'#s not what happens.
Baker, has the enviable knack of drawing you into the scene, making you feel like you are a fly on the wall and then with a wham bam, you are transported from normality tosomething very sinister and extremely uncomfortable.
The combination of the harsh environs, Fiona and Neils increasing desperation and the overpowering sense of a very real, yet unidentified danger luking just out of reach makes this a tense and compelling psychological thriller. - one which will grab you by the throat and keep you turning the pages well into the wee hours.
Baker portrays the solitude and the closing in of boundaries with ease and throuhg her addictively descriptive prose.
If I could I would most certainly give this one ten stars. As it is, I'll have to content myself with 5 big shiny ones.
Loved it!

A bit slow to start but once I kinda got invested then it was such a good read. Its dark and a bit eerie, I had no clue what was going on or what the deal was with the locals and the author did an amazing job of capturing that trapped, unsettled vibe throughout.

"Living on Winters End changed us. Whether that's for the better or not, I guess only time will tell . . ."

Fiona and Neil move to an island called Winters End to get away from their past. But it followed them and the locals already know their secrets.

This took me a while to get into but once I finally did I couldn't put it down. Excellent thriller.

Wow, what a great thriller! Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC of The Last Wife. Fiona and Neil move to a remote island after a scandal, with hopes to start anew. Soon they discover Winters End may not be the idyllic respite they were seeking. It seems no one wants them on the island. Fiona realizes that there seem to be very few women on Winters End. This book will take you on a thrilling journey as Fiona begins to unravel the mysteries of Winters End. I do wish there had been a bit more of an explanation as to the odd behavior from all the townsfolk, but this was a solid 4.5 star book!

This book took a little bit for me to get into, however once I did I wanted to know more. The Last Wife was full of suspense and mystery throughout. I enjoyed this book once I was able to become invested and found there to be numerous twists and turns that I did not see coming!

Fiona and Neil move to Winters End to leave their past behind but the locals have their secrets too.
The novel begins at a leisurely pace where mainly Fiona is telling us her impressions of the place, its people and the reasons that have led her there while in the second part the pace accelerates to reach a heart-stopping ending.
It took me a while to get to the second part because Fiona's inner dialogue was sometimes boring and repetitive but in the end, the book meets the expectations.

I found this book a bit hard to get into the storyline in the beginning but by about 25% I felt as though I had got through the beginning.

It is a dark read for me but I soon got on with the characters and it did keep me interested throughout.

Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC which I would recommend.

Well….this author who never fails to please has surprised me,oh not in the fact that the book isen’t up to the usual standards….but that this book is darker than previous books….an isolated island out in the North Sea…a couple who are looking for a fresh start after a disastrous time…..secretive islanders, missing residents and visitors, big secrets…..massive secrets and they all lead to one person….it’s petrifying for the new couple on the block, they are afraid…..and well they might be
An exhilarating whoosh of a story that sets off at speed and never really stops even when describing the island and its ‘strange’ folk that all leads to a macabre and chilling discovery and ending
Trust no one in this book and watch your back
Great read

So this book took me a little bit to get into but when I got past the longer winded parts I was happy I stuck through it! Fiona and Neil move to a new town for a fresh start and to hopefully forget about their past shady dealings. While I’m this town winters edge Fiona starts to notice there aren’t many women around? I read this in a few day I will say that the beginning of the book does drag on a bit , I promise though that when you get through that the book really is a wild ride!! I’m giving

This novel, written by a talented and gifted author, is a page turner. It moves quickly, and the characters are realistic. The island is dark and dreary, a perfect setting for a mystery. The main characters, a couple running from their past mistakes, find that the natives are not all welcoming. Murder and mayhem…family and friends…this book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Thanks also to the publisher and author. I like the books by Baker. They are intriguing and mysterious. Guessing is not always possible as the red herrings abound. Be transformed for an afternoon of intrigue on this island.

Fiona and Neil move to Winters End to start again to leave the guilt of their past behind.
They expected the people of the island to be friendly, but were mistaken. Anonymous threatening notes warning them to leave, faeces spread on their doorstep, and outright rudeness does not chase them from their new home.

Fiona realises that there are few women on the island, and finds that there are recent graves in the graveyard all belonging to women. She vows to get to the bottom of this mystery that no one speaks about.
And then she disappears.

I enjoyed this novel, it was suspenseful and mysterious, but it was somewhat long winded in places. I just cannot understand though, why the majority of the villagers were silent to the goings on for so many years....... that could have been explained.
