Another hit by Alex Stone! I loved this book and everything about it. I felt for the main character and enjoyed her journey. 5 stars!

The Good Patient is the second book I have read by Alex Stone and I enjoyed both of them, but there are some things that kept this one from being a five star read. Lauren Taylor’s life has always been full of pain. Her mother used medication to abuse her and her boyfriend, who helped her get away from her mother physically abuses her. She is used to being in the hospital with stomach pains and now broken bones. She is the good patient referred to in the title. The doctors aren't sure if she enjoys the pain, as she doesn't seem to do anything to get away from it. When her boyfriend Josh disappears one day and she is found in the water near drowning with a serious head injury. The police suspect that she killed Josh and faked the accident. There is one doctor that Lauren confides in, Dr. Menon, but there is something wrong with their relationship.

This book starts strong with us learning about the accident and Lauren's life, told in a dual timeline. It moves quickly in short, chapters that drew me into the story. But then there is a romance between Lauren and Dr. Menon that is a bit awkward. As the story moves forward, I wanted to know what happened to Josh and if Lauren had anything to do with it. I enjoyed the past timeline better, learning about Lauren's life and what led to the possibility that she might have killed Josh. As the story progressed, the pace slowed down for me, although there were a few twists left to the end. This was just an okay read for me, but there were some promising threads that kept me reading.

This book was a page turner from beginning to end. A missing boyfriend. A girlfriend with a history of mental illness who allegedly was the last one seen with him. Who is at fault. This book has so many twists and turns it had me guessing until the end. Amazing writing. Would highly recommend. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I've read many books by this author and they just keep getting better and better. This was such a great read and all the suspense kept me turning page after page until late into the night. Do yourself a favor and read this ASAP!

I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.

I’ve read a few of Alex Stone’s previous novels but I think this is my favourite to date!

This is a psychological thriller/ suspense that keeps your mind ticking over throughout and has you constantly second-guessing the motives of the main characters.

Lauren and Abhilash take centre stage and I particularly liked how he was able to challenge her ingrained thinking about herself and her relationships with both her mum and boyfriend Josh.

Lauren’s character is a complex one and I felt like the chapters were written almost as a monologue of the internal conversations she was having with herself as well as a reflection of her skewed perspective on the themes of love, family and healthy relationships.

The writing style is engaging and the dual timeline of ‘then’ and ‘now’ chapters compel you to keep reading to uncover more. There are some difficult themes but these are dealt with sensitively and are crucial to the overall plot.

I found the police interview chapters particularly interesting due to the assumptions made based on previous history, alongside the uncertainty surrounding FII (Fabricated or Induced Illness). The fact that certain officers were aware of the previous case history added an extra element.

A fascinating read and most definitely recommended!

This book has a past and present timeline. It moves at a slow pace , which sometimes led me to be distracted. The ending seemed to be a little rushed.

This was a great read, and I really enjoyed it! Haven't read much of this author, but will read more in future.

I am a huge fan of Alex Stone, this is a book that has pulled me in and been impossible to put down.

This moves at a steady pace and is completely gripping. I devoured this book in just one sitting. There are twists and turns to keep the reader guessing from the beginning in this one.

Stone writes in a way that transports the reader. You feel as though you are watching this play out. I have been completely caught up in the events of this one.

I love that the author has included tough themes of both abuse and fabricated illness, it really adds an element to this book. It makes it a little hard hitting at times but is brilliantly done.

I have liked the mix of characters in this one and this has been enjoyable from beginning to end. I definitely recommend this book.

This was an ok read for me! I have read other books by this author that I have enjoyed so will definitely keep on reading her books, just this one didn't grab me!

The story was predictable from the get go.
Now, I can blame my overthinking and overachieving personality and I honestly love it when I can make a plausible argument as to where the story is leading to and love it when my theory comes right .. who doesn’t ?!?

The story had many predictable moments but for a psychological thriller it was good enough.

The plot was interesting and the characters were engaging and what kept this book really going was the future to past episodes.
This plot working really worked out well.

Lauren wakes up in hospital after a jet ski accident, she is soon questioned by the police to the whereabouts of her boyfriend, Josh, Lauren doesn’t understand as she was alone on the jet ski. It seems Josh is now missing and everyone is looking at Lauren for answers. Dr Menon asked if she finally did it? The storyline flips back 6 months, where it seems Lauren is prone to ‘accidents’ that lad to medical attention, Josh is not the charmer and loved up boyfriend he portrays. Josh was Lauren’s saviour after a very unconventional childhood and a mother with munchausen by proxy. Dr Menon befriends Lauren and work to find out where Josh really is and what happened that morning.
An interesting psychological thriller, with a few predictable moments but plenty of twists too. Switching from past and present timelines, some areas had lots of detail, some seemed a bit rushed. Overall, a good read.

My Review: It took me a little to settle into this story with the back and forwards in time and days, I enjoyed the questions and thrill, the stomach turning and guessing that it brought with it. We follow Lauren whose relationship with her mother was complex and questionable. Her supportive boyfriend Josh and her best friend Emma through light and shade into the mix. However, Abhilash is the incredible Doctor who has her questioning everything. At times you wonder if the stalker is being stalked? Is there a stalker? Domestic Violence? Self Sabotage? Love? So many twists and turns, lies, hidden agendas, in all its a gripping story, as are Alex Stone's previous two books.

Sipping thoughts: I like Alex Stone, but this book fell so short for me. I felt like I was waiting for something big to happen. I liked the craziness of the relationship, but it felt more like a domestic suspense than thriller.

A modest effort in the thriller genre. There are some twist and turns but it was not as captivating as I had anticipated

I found this an ok read but nothing was a standout omg moment for me, it fell flat as both a thriller and a romance/love triangle story.

I wouldn't recommend this book to a hard-core thriller lover.

A book with lots of little twists and will keep you wants to read in one sitting. Alex Stone skillfully sends the reader down blind alleys and everything makes sense at the end.
