this book was fucking delightful. absolutely absurd and ridiculous but delightful.

my only complaints:
- i always find it incredibly hard to read about creatives (singers, performers, artists) because the description of their work always feels very cliché. cassie’s art rlly tested my limits lmfao
- I KNOW that the ending was good… however….. sorry i am pained by unresolved stuff and i hate the idea of “i’ll think about it” rather than “yes.” (that is very confusing and misleading but oh well)
- sometimes fredrick’s confusions about the real world we’re weird?? idk at times he spoke in a very bizarre way that didn’t feel like someone who had been alive in the 1920s…. very weird but i guess that’s to be expected for comedic effect

DESPITE THOSE!!! i rlly liked this!! it was so incredibly silly while also maintaining so much heart. (and surprisingly super sexy? idk why i say surprisingly, vampires are sexy)

anyway!! super fun read, super unique, super quick and enjoyable

The most unrealistic part of this book was the possibility that the rent was $200. Even for a three hundred year old vampire who was asleep for one hundred years, But the amount of love I have for that ancient, beautiful man makes it okay. I was really falling in love with a vampire named Frederick, not surprising really. I always was Team Edward.

I loved this book. Cassie and Frederick were an absolute delight to read. This book was a breath of fresh air. I truly think that Jenna Levine is a new favourite author for me. Her voice is so bubbly and bright. I loved how Cassie’s reactions were so realistic to finding out that your roommate was actually a vampire. This book was wonderful.

I hope Reginald is going to get his HEA next because that chaos would be so fun to read.

Thank you NetGalley for providing my with an ARC in exchange for an honest review :)

Rating: 4.5 stars!

This was so FUN!! I found myself laughing out loud as I sat in bed reading this until 1am - Frederick was so silly. This reminded me of The Flatmate sometimes, but was still completely unique and different in its own way. I love the letters they exchanged to each other and Frederick's attempts at blending into modern society were hilarious - especially when Cassie thought he was just trying to be funny. I was tempted to give 5 stars solely for the mention of my favorite K-drama - Crash Landing on You!
I found the ending to fall just a bit flat and rushed - the conflict came and was resolved too fast for me, but I enjoyed the Epilogue :)

A great new Romantic Comedy!

My Roommate is a Vampire is about exactly what you think. Cassie is an artist who is in desperate need of a new place to live. Frederick is a rich vampire who needs someone to teach him how to fit into modern society because he was in a coma for 100 years. Romance and ridiculousness ensue. It was almost the story I wanted to read but never quite got to where I needed it to go.

Cassie needed to find somewhere to live and quick. When she saw a listing on Craig's List for an apartment in Lincoln Park for only $200 a month, it seemed too good to be true and maybe it was. Though she was initially wary, the owner, Frederick, grew on her with his very formal and old fashioned ways, and she decided to stay. Little did she know that this arrangement would result in a friendship and a whole lot more.

I didn't quite know what to expect when I picked up this novel, but I could not resist a title like that. And, you know what? I had a rather delightful time getting to know Cassie and Frederick.

The premise was a fun one. Frederick had been a coma for many, many, MANY years, and now that he had awakened, he needed guidance navigating the modern world. That's where his roommate fit in. He would observe them, and they would be his guide on how to fit into this new world. Obviously, this resulted in some amusing situations, but what I really adored was the growing friendship and attraction between Cassie and Frederick. One moment that really stood out for me was when they were watching episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer together. The resulting discourse tickled me, and it was also fun remembering a show I loved so much.

Though this story was told primarily from Cassie's point of view, Levine allowed me into Frederick's head via notes, texts, and diary entries. I was grateful for that because I always yearn for both parties' thoughts when reading a romance. It may even be really important for me to fully buy into the relationship.

There was one plot point which I felt was resolved too quickly (easily?), but it was a small blip in a story I had a great time reading. Overall, I found this to be a solid debut. I even felt like a door was left open for a sequel or companion novel, and I know I would happily return to this world.

I absolutely LOVED this book and I ATE it up. If it hadn't been for the plans I'd had the night I started the book, I easily would've finished it in one sitting. That's how invested I was. I didn't go into this book with high expectations - I imagined it was either going to go really well, or really poorly and I'm SO happy it went well.

This book felt like one of the 2000s Disney Channel movies with the far-fetched (but fun) plot, messy (but lovable) characters, cringey (but also not) humor. Cassie was great as an MC and Fredrick was AMAZING as a love interest. He made the book for me. He just gave lost puppy, golden retriever energy throughout the book. His dialogue was hilarious, and the way he treated Cassie was so wonderful. Their interactions through their notes was a pleasure to read. And can we talk about the spicy scene? Because WOW, it was fantastic.

Is the book perfect? Certainly not. Cassie accepts vampires are a thing FAR too easily and the ending was just... whack. Too rushed, too easy. But considering I was smiling and giggling and kicking my feet during this book... I don't really care for those imperfections. I'm willing to turn a semi-blind eye to them.

Overall, this book was a blast and I will be eagerly waiting for this author's future books!

Cassie Greenberg needed a room to rent and felt so lucky she found one for $200 a month in a great neighborhood with a good looking roommate and although the furnishings were quite antique and from different era’s it was still way more than she expected for the price. She did find her roommate although extremely hot a bit awkward and old fashion what Cassie doesn’t know is that her roommate is a vampire and he is falling for her as much as she is falling for him. Unfortunately his mother wants him to honor the arrangement she made for him to marry another woman. Her name is Esmeralda Jamison and just like Frederick‘s mother she doesn’t take no for an answer there are many reasons why Frederick and Cassie cannot be together most of all because she is mortal and he is a vampire but needs moss in love sometimes when’s the day but what about his mother Cassie was just supposed to teach him how to live in the modern era in the last thing Kathy needs is complications especially when all her dreams seem to be coming true but it’s being with a vampire part of those dreams? This was my favorite book this year I absolutely loved this book I love reading Frederick and Casey’s correspondence with Fredericks oh so innocent viewpoint of today I thought his hatred of Reginald was hilarious I love Sam and his husband I did think Cassies art sounded weird but that’s just my opinion and a minor part to the story. This is a great book and one I highly recommend a definite five star laugh out loud hilariously funny sweet romance read! I want to thank Berkeley publishing and NetGalley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

“My Roommate Is a Vampire” by Jenna Levine was exactly what I needed. It was a light, fun, easy read that I flew through in 2 days! We all know that every book plot has a conflict, a moment when our happy story comes to a screeching halt and something happens that our characters must overcome. What I liked about this story is that the conflict wasn’t too heavy, too drawn out, too dark.
As I said before, this was an incredibly light read, and I was entertained the whole time. It read like a rom-com, but our dashing love interest was a vampire, so I loved it. What I didn’t really like was the quick wrap up. This tends to be a recurring problem for me, as I really enjoy the story, then the ending just… ends too quickly or too simply. That is my only complaint! Other than that, I thought this was a perfect read to get me in the mood for fall.
4/5 Stars.

A cute and fun paranormal romance, perfect for spooky season!!

It fell a little flat for me in a few spots - first, when Cassie finds out her roommate is a vampire, she just kind of accepts the fact that vampires exist immediately, without really any questioning.

And then the end was a little anti-climatic for me.

But I think anyone wanting an easy read during the fall time would love this book!

I absolutely adored this cozy vampire romance! It was such a different pacing and vibe than other vampire romances, and while I love those, what set this one apart really made it shine. The reader is presented with the crazy idea of a vampire needing a roommate, and then when the roommate shows up, the vampire starts to have feelings. This is very much a slow burn sort of romance, alongside the popular trope of forced proximity, and the cast of characters make you feel like you know everyone without getting overwhelmed with details. The writing style is set at a good pace, especially for a "cozy" sort of romance where you want to feel like you're reading it real-time. This sort of story I always find is best read slowly, rather than rushing through to the end, and that's exactly what I did.

In desperate need of a new place to live, unemployed art teacher Cassie Greenberg is amazed to find a listing for a Chicago apartment in a nice neighborhood for just $200/month. Her best friend sees it as a giant red flag...but Cassie sees it as an opportunity. Upon meeting her potential roomie, she finds a gorgeous man completely out of touch with reality, including modern-day prices. Assuming he is just rich with no sense of how much things cost, she moves in and slowly adjusts to living with him. Given that he sleeps during the day and works at night, she is unbothered by his nocturnal activities...until one day she comes home early from a night out to find the fridge full of blood. Someone has some explaining to do. Frederick J. Fitzwilliam has no idea how to live in the 21st century, having been in a deep sleep for the last 100 years, and he is desperate to have a human companion to teach him how to live in present day. Making a deal with Cassie is easy, but keeping his feelings under control and his hands to himself is not. Especially when he realizes Cassie may just have feelings for him too.

The dynamic between Cassie and Frederick was so spot on - the chemistry, the daily interactions when they were just roommates, and how Cassie rolled with the punches as she learned about each new quirk Frederick had. The part of the story before she founds out he was a vampire were perhaps my favorite, simply because she just kept rationalizing everything. Strange closet she's not allowed in? He probably has an embarrassing collection of Precious Moments figurines. No cookware to be found in the kitchen? He must have so much money that he can eat out for every meal. I have to say, I'm not sure I would let so many things slide, but Cassie was so chill the entire time. Until the blood, of course. She wasn't so chill about that. But then Frederick was such a sweetheart, so genuine and understanding of her concerns. He really just wanted to make sure she was comfortable, and it was quite clear that they both missed each other's company when they were apart. And then when Cassie got Frederick new clothes to fit modern day fashion? That's when the steam started to form, and soon they couldn't resist the temptation of a romance. Even if it was likely doomed due to her mortality. Or is it? The book ends with a HFN ending, so maybe we'll find out in the future how they deal with that pesky problem.

I am so excited to have found this author at the beginning of her career, and I'm certain she'll be an auto-buy for me going forward. Between her character development, writing style, and overall cozy plot vibes, I am sure to like whatever she writes next.

Roommance, vampires and a hot mess heroine. This really should have worked for me, but it fell flat. There were some funny moments, but the old-timey man wakes up after 100 years bit got stale pretty quick. I didn't get the tension or depth I needed, which makes for a pretty fluffy but surface-level read. That said, the book was picked as an Indie Next title, so other people love it!

What a fantastic debut novel!

My Roommate Is a Vampire is a laugh-out-loud, highly entertaining rom-com.

My Roommate Is a Vampire is smartly written with likable characters and an intriguing storyline. I adored the way Frederick was written. He was very old world, with Mr. Darcy-like tendencies. He was adorably clueless when it came to modern times and modern women and Cassie certainly gave him a run for his money.

This book kept me on my toes in the best possible way. I found myself laughing out loud so many times and almost always had a smile on my face. Cassie and Frederick were absolutely adorable together. I loved their interactions and banter. I loved the cute notes they left for each other. And despite them being the most unlikely pair, I couldn't get enough.

My Roommate Is a Vampire was an absolute joy to read. I easily devoured this book and was so surprised to find out that this book is this author's debut novel. If you're looking for a fun and unique rom-com, you won't want to miss My Roommate Is a Vampire.

Please believe me when I say that I rarely EVER read a whole book from start to finish in one sitting, especially an ebook. This one ensnared me and delighted me for 4 hours straight, nonstop. Fun, sexy, and clever, with compelling characters and a sprinkling of Buffy the Vampire Slayer references, this rom com is pure delight!
Thank you Berkley Romance for the eARC!

This book took me completely off-guard. I wasn't sure what to expect other than, you know, the heroine's roommate being a vampire. But the characters and their antics had me laughing from the first page.

The story follows Cassie Greenberg a down on her luck artist on the brink of eviction. When she finds a posting for a roommate in a beautiful Chicago neighborhood, it seems too good to be true. With his oddly formal wording, the owner comes off as an old man in their correspondence, so imagine her surprise when she visits the apartment for a tour and Frederick, the most handsome man she's ever met opens the door. On the surface he appears normal, but in reality he is far from it. He keeps odd hours, sleeping all day and going out all night on business, and speaks like a man out of time, and yet he also writes Cassie swoon-worthy notes, and makes her feel things no one else has. But when she finds bags of blood in their refrigerator one day, it appears Frederick has some explaining to do, and the explanation is nothing she could have ever imagined. As it turns out, Frederick happens to be a vampire, and he has a proposition for her.

This book was unhinged and I adored virtually every second of it. It had me laughing until I was crying, and the source of that humor was undoubtedly Frederick. I loved how he had absolutely no idea how to act in modern society, he truly was a man out of time, and it was so funny seeing how the smallest thing to us would be something that he couldn't even comprehend. One of my favorite parts was how each chapter would start with something from his perspective, whether it was texts with his vampire friend, his diary entries, or my personal favorite, his Google search history. It provided insight into what he was thinking while still keeping the bulk of the story within Cassie's POV.

Cassie and Frederick's chemistry was naturally electric, from their exchanged notes to their actual interactions. I was so invested in their relationship, and loved how Cassie helping Frederick assimilate to modern society just exponentially amplified their feelings for one another.

Overall this book was the perfect light-hearted and truly hilarious read. The only thing that kept it from being a full five stars was the way Cassie outsmarted the antagonist in the third act. I understood the humor behind it, but at the same time it felt a little too easy and was the only thing that really took me out of the story. However, that does not take away from how much I loved the story as a whole. It was such a unique and wonderfully executed concept, and I can't wait to see more from this author!

Cassie is desperate for a place to live, so despite her hesitation, she moves into an apartment with a roommate only asking for $200 a month. Soon, she realizes though that Frederick isn't just weird - he is a vampire. Despite this, she stays and soon she finds herself attracted to him.

This was a cute romance! It was easy to read, and there was never any crazy drama, which made it very enjoyable throughout. Is it going to blow you away with crazy amazing writing? No, probably not. However, it is a cute, easy romance with a slight twist in that one of the protagonists is a vampire!

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Swoon!!!!! I am obsessed with this, and everybody who knows me in real life is so irritated at this point bc I could not stop talking about this book!!!

Cassie is a struggling artist who finds a very cheap apartment on Craigslist. But why is it so cheap, and who is this very formal sounding roommate? Frederick J. Fitzwilliam is just so sweet. I mean, if a guy like this actually exists, then that's my endgame, ya'll. Of course, Cassie finds out he his a vampire and has to figure out if she trusts this very kind and very smexy man. (It's a romcom, so you have an idea, right?)

The one 🔥🔥🔥 scene lasted a whole chapter and made me very happy. I really found no faults in this book, and I definitely recommend this to romcom readers.

Out August 29, 2023!

Thank you, Netgalley and Publisher, for this Arc!

I heard a few mixed reviews regarding this book, so I kept that in mind when I read it again a few weeks later. And I am glad that I did because I actually enjoyed reading it rather than hating it. I am going to warn you, so keep it in mind. If you are expecting an in-depth or emotional romance story, this book isn’t it. It’s more of a light-hearted rom-com read with cutesy references. Keep that in mind, and you will enjoy this book more. And now, let’s get into My Roommate is a Vampire.

Since we are in the season of reading about vampires, it's a bit obvious that we read My Roommate is a Vampire. And I know what you are thinking; I am thinking it too. I want a vampire as a roommate too. It seems kind of fun. Cassie is having a fun time with her vampire roommate, but she kind of didn’t know it in the beginning. But she can move on from it, especially since her rent is love and she is falling in love with him.

Cassie may be down on her luck in the beginning, but she scores big time when she answers an ad for a roommate. It’s in a perfect location, and the rent is such a steal. She is obviously going to do it. You can’t blame her; we will all do it. It’s just that being roommates with a vampire is part of the deal, just silently. And it’s kind of funny how Cassie finds out and unravels with the news. She goes off the deep end for a bit. And it’s only because she started having feelings for him, Frederick.

Frederick is an old soul. And yes, I know the irony of it since he has been alive for many, many years as a vampire. But I love that he is still an old soul. He genuinely cares about Cassie's well-being as she starts living with him. It was a bit tricky at first because she didn’t know he was a vampire. But once the truth is revealed, things get better between them. They can actually form a relationship. You know they have feelings for each other. They are constantly writing notes, spending all of their free time together, encouraging each other about anything, and always looking out for each other.

✨ Review ✨ My Roommate Is a Vampire by Jenna Levine; Narrated by: Gilli Messer

This was such a fun read that doesn't take the genre of vampire writing TOO seriously.

Cassie Greenberg's about to get evicted from her Chicago apartment, because her art and odd jobs aren't paying the bills. When she answers a low-rent roommate ad on craigslist, she suspects the apartment is too good to be true. Frederick J. Fitzwilliam lives in a giant apartment, sleeps all day, and is gone all night -- making him the perfect roommate, but quickly Cassie begins to observe weird things...

Ultimately, Cassie finds that Frederick has become disconnected from the modern world and she works to orient him to the 21st century -- teaching him about ordering coffee, riding transit, etc. The silly miscommunications and details and this book are just such a delight and really made it enjoyable.

I loved Gilli Messer's narration, and this book helped me get out of a slump. It was light and funny with some intense romantic connection though that didn't necessarily feel like the core of the book.

All in all, a great reason for summer OR spooky season!

3.5 stars rounded up. Cassie Greenberg is a somewhat struggling artist living in Chicago who is a bit wary of a seems-too-good-to-be-true ad for a roommate in a downtown apartment. The title might have clued you in to this, but Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, who is advertising said apartment, is a vampire. The reader, of course, knows something is up right away, but this isn't something that Cassie is clued into until about a quarter of the way into the book. From there, mild silly hijinks ensue, with a slightly dramatic (but in a good way) conclusion.

This was a cute, light-hearted paranormal romance that shouldn't be taken too seriously. There wasn't a lot of depth, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the book. There were genuinely funny moments (Frederick's text exchanges were particularly fun to read) and the writing wasn't bad. This is best for readers who voraciously consume vampire stories, can handle a silly interpretation of vampire lore, and are looking for a quick read.

Do light and fluffy vampire romances work? I think this one does! I loved Frederick J. Fitzwilliam and found myself laughing quite as he and Cassie acclimate to each other (especially the cookware episode). Frederick gave me major Angel vibes from Buffy, which I appreciated quite a bit. If someone is looking for a light romance, this would be a good choice, even if they haven't read a lot of vampire fiction before.
