The Heart That Returns surprised me, I thought it was going to be your basic romance novel, it definitely was not. I was hooked into the story line and wanted to see it to the end. Of course it had some typical romance novel story lines but I really enjoyed the characters and the flow of the story. I loved how the story intertwined with indigenous family culture and values. Not only one tribe but two were woven into the story. I found myself googling up the indigenous words used but could not find any definitions. I was glad when the were clarified. The author describes beautiful scenery from the porch of the ranch and I wanted to drink my coffee on those rockers. The sunsets and sunrises described in the story made me want to take a trip out to the Southeastern states.
Don't get me started on the foreplay between Roni and Takoda it was hot and heavy and written perfectly.
The story is a typical one where boy meets girl and then must leave girl but will he come back? The story doesn't just revolve around the love couple but it also goes into the family dynamics. This is the kind of family everyone wants. They are interconnected and stay that way throughout the story. Everyone has a place and a job that helps the family become bigger and better. The only thing I wanted more of besides the hot and steamy scenes was to get to know the character Fish better. They mention her but don't go into details. The rest of the family is described and shown to be true to themselves but Fish is not given a story line. Perhaps the author has another book in mind for Fish. I would be hooked into that. Of course it is not all unicorns and balloons written into the story, there is always conflict. I think the story line could of been longer and the stories played out longer with more details and plot twists of the bad guys. I don't want to spoil anything but every story has conflict and disasters and The Heart That Returns is no exception.
I just looked this book up on Amazon and found it to be part of a series. I did not realize this and now I will have to go back and read number one.
I want to Thank NetGalley and McKenna Publishing for letting me read an ARC of the book.

All I can say is WOW!!! 😱😱

This book went above and beyond my expectations! Everything from the culture, to the family dynamic , I was above invested in this book! Not having a chance to learn about my own native culture I felt like I was in the book enjoying every moment and learning curve! This book had me crying in some points , then other points I was like wait … what!

One of the best features of this book and story is that it’s not over bearing. It’s not like your general same story, and exaggerated scenes. I was left expecting one thing but then something else happens! It has some spice to it, yet it wasn’t chapters on chapter about it ! Takoda is such a different character I just loved him! And the culture, just wow I REALLY liked this book!

The only thing I had issues with was the prologue, it just felt very fast and you were being thrown a lot of points very quick ! Almost like watching a movie on fast forward, but once you can get over that it was great!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Kit McKenna’s The Heart That Returns stars Veronica Priddy (who goes by Roni) and Takoda. This a sweet romance with a little steam.

Roni is a vet who lives in Ada, Oklahoma and has a huge heart. She is a member of the Chickasaw nation and helps care for an elder whose grandson has seemingly abandoned him. As the elder nears his death, she asks the grandson to return. The grandson Rowdy is a famous musician who causes all sorts of trouble in his wake and has to be babysat by Takoda. As Rowdy and Takoda come to Oklahoma to spend time with the grandfather in his last days, Takoda and Roni notice an attraction. However, after the grandfather passes away, Rowdy and Takoda leave town… leaving Roni with lots of questions.

I liked the book. Roni is a strong, independent woman who knows what she wants. I loved how well developed her character was. I enjoyed the other main characters as well as how the Chickasaw culture is featured prominently in the book.

Thank you to the author, BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for an ebook in exchange for my review.
