This was an enjoyable Housemaid-esque legal thriller. There were quite a few unexpected twists, although it did feel a little long to read.

Madison got to get all dressed up and attend a prestigious legal gala with the judge. However, she also had some business to do in exchange… this was a scene I could definitely picture in a movie!

Madison is a young law student studying hard to better her life and that of her family. She is chosen to be the intern for a judge who she has admired and emulated for years. But there are secrets that she has hidden from the judge- secrets that could derail her ambitions if they come to light. As she settles into her internship she realizes that something isn't right within the judge's court. She is drawn into intrigue and danger as she tries to help her family and figure out what is going on in the court. This book has twists and turns, along with surprises along the way. #TheIntern #netgalley

The Intern is a fast paced suspense book. Campbell is clearly a knowledgeable professional in her field and the book is infused with that. Legal thrillers can be slower but this one really clipped along. I was invested in both perspectives and enjoyed the twists.

Absolutely loved this book! I read it in one sitting, it definitely keeps you interested from the start!
Madison is a Harvard Law Student and is taking classes with Judge Convoy, who she has always loved. Madison is encouraged to apply to an internship for the Judge. Her brother gets a serious drug charge and Madison quickly learns the Judge that charged him was the one and only Convoy. She has to make a decision to work with the Judge or help her troubled brother.
Madison and the Judge form a friendly relationship and Madison realizes the Judge is not all that she seems. Could their friendship help her brother? How far will Madison go to find out the truth about the Judge?
Fast paced and truly was not able to book this book down! I absolutely loved it!

Thank you for the free read of The Intern. I liked this book overall. Good thriller. Liked the lawyer aspect. Felt it was a little over the top. The ending felt rushed.

I was so excited for this book. It had the perfect blend of drama and suspense. I'd never read anything by this author before and I'm already looking forward to their next book.

The Intern by Michele Campbell is about a Harvard Law student, Madison Riviera, who has been following Judge Kathryn Conroy’s success for years. Madison has a class with the Judge, she lands an internship with the Judge, then takes her up on an offer to cat-sit her beloved cat Lucy. Madison can’t believe her luck, but at the same time, she is hiding a secret that can rip everything she has worked so hard for away in an instant. Her younger brother Danny is arrested for a crime he said he didn’t commit, and he tells Madison and her mother exactly who is behind the set up. The judge assigned to his case is none other than Judge Kathryn Conroy. When Danny goes missing, Madison will stop at nothing to find her brother and get him out of jail. As Madison begins to immerse herself further into the Judge’s life, she is beginning to see nothing is what it seems. The Judge has secrets of her own, life or death secrets, and now both women need to work together so they both make it out alive.
The story is told by two points of view, Madison and Judge Conroy. The beginning is a little slow, it as the plot unravels, we find out about the Judge’s dark past. It includes struggles of poverty, an illegitimate child born out of wedlock, abuse, control, and being part of a family with sinister motives she can’t seem to get out of. As for Madison’s point of view, she begins as a naive character but as she finds out who Kathryn really is, especially the danger she is willing to put Madison in, she quickly learns her brother was right the whole time.
As I mentioned, the story starts off slow, but it quickly picks up pace as we see the plot unfold and the secrets revealed. Stay for the long game, I promise it is worth it! The character development is one of the best I’ve read in a long time. The lead up to the surprise twisted ending will leave you with your mouth open wanting more. Some characters are truly hateful, but you will find yourself rooting for the underdogs here. This was my first Michele Campbell book, now I have to delve into more! A new fan here.
I would like to thank Netgalley, St Martin’s Press and Michele Campbell for this heart throbbing thriller. I’m giving it 4 stars, only because the beginning almost had me putting it aside never to be looked at again, but I’m telling you, hang in there.

Another fast-paced thriller from Michele Campbell! This plot has multiple perspectives. One viewpoint: Madison Rivera, who can't believe her luck when she gets an internship with a judge she’s respected since high school. The other viewpoint: Judge Kathryn Conroy, who’s worked hard to get where she is, surviving insurmountable odds.
Told in a nonlinear timeline, it may get confusing but stick with it. The timelines will meet, and it all makes sense. From time to time, you’ll mistrust or dislike both Madison and her mentor, Judge Conroy. They actually have a lot in common, including the keen ability to be calculating, scheming and shrewd. But who’ll get the upper hand? Will Madison lose her new career as a lawyer before it even begins? Will Judge Conroy allow herself to be knocked off her throne by her innocent young intern?
The pace is excellent; no boring wordiness and no dull moments. This new thriller by Michele is a must-read for mystery enthusiasts.
Thanks to St. Martin’s Press for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. The publishing date was October 3, 2023.

Madison, a law student, gets the opportunity of a lifetime when her professor/idol Judge Conroy offers her an internship. Madison is excited and decides it is best not to tell the Judge that her brother has recently been arrested, fearing she will lose the opportunity.
Then the wild ride begins. Danny goes missing from prison. Madison finds out things about Kathryn Conroy, and vice versa. And you don't know what to expect, and there were definitely some surprises.
A great good versus evil story! I switched between ebook and audio and both were well done.
Many thanks to Netgalley, MacMillan Audio and St. Martin's Press for an ALC and ARC in exchange for my honest review.

The Intern is an interesting book about a Harvard Law School student whose background somewhat resembles a professor who is actually a Federal judge. When she accepts an internship in the judge’s office, she finds herself caught up in conflicts with her mother, her brother and colleagues. This is a book that once started cannot be put down. It is well written and does not require the reader to suspend belief about anything and the ending comes as a small surprise.
It is easy to recommend this novel to all who enjoy this genre and I thank NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the opportunity to read and review this book prior to publication.

Having read and enjoyed several of Michele Campbell's previous books, I was happy to see that a new one was coming, one with a premise that sounded promising. And it certainly delivered on that promise. This is the story of two intelligent women who are thrown together in a cat & mouse game by family circumstances in each of their lives - but can they trust each other? And who's the cat, and who's the mouse? Madison is a driven and promising law student, Kathryn is the federal judge who inspired Madison to pursue a law career. Kathryn's offer of an internship in her office is not only a major coup for her potential legal career, it's also an opportunity to get information about her brother's court case on drug charges that he swears were a setup. We learn about the backgrounds of both women and the paths that lead them to their current situations. And we wonder - how far will each go to reach her objective?
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for providing a copy for an unbiased review.

Book has an interesting premise. I found the characters to be quite unlikeable but maybe I’m supposed to feel that way. Initially the book moved slowly but I did appreciate the ending. I thought it was a decent book but would have liked a bit more thrill/twist. I was able to guess a bit early on what was going to happen.

The Intern by Michele Campbell is a great fast paced thriller! I was on the edge of my seat during the whole book! I loved the structure of the book. It was a divided into sections by character, it went back-and-forth between Madison and Kathryn’s stories. I found Kathryn’s backstory to be fascinating. Definitely do not miss this one! I have read several of the authors, previous books and each time I think that one is my favorite but now The Intern is for sure my favorite. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

The internship of a lifetime turns into a dangerous cat & mouse game seeped in corruption & betrayal
Madison Rivera is on top of the world when she lands an internship with her much admired professor and respected judge, Kathryn Conroy. Both women are ambitious, intelligent and pulled themselves up from humble beginnings. But both women also harbor secrets from the other side of the law. Secrets that are at odds with the lives they lead.
Full of betrayal, corruption, family secrets, lies and deadly twists this was another win for me by Michelle Campbell. Read if you enjoy legal based thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! When I realized that it was focused around the mob and the court, I was a bit skeptical because legal thrillers can be hit or miss for me. But I found that it was done well and wasn’t too consumed by the legal aspect.
I spent the entire time not knowing if I wanted to love or hate Judge Conroy. I decided that I love her and she’s a total badass, but I really enjoyed not knowing everything about her character and her position in the story.
I also really liked Madison, the intern. Her dynamic with the judge was so fun to read about, and I was constantly wondering where things will end up.
Overall, I liked this one a lot. The writing was well done, the characters were nicely developed, and there was always something new happening. I didn’t feel that there were any super shocking moments or major twists, but it was still a solid thriller.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press for my gifted copy!

I love a book with a dual timeline and enjoyed reading The Intern. Madison Rivera is a Harvard Law student. One of her teachers Judge Conroy, who also is a federal judge, offers her an internship in her chambers. However, both Madison and Judge Conroy have issues with the past and the present. They have to work together and sometimes against each other to live to see another day.
This is a book to read for enjoyment if you like thrillers. It keeps you guess on how they are going to get out of the mess they are currently in and what are the consequences of their actions. The Intern is a real page turner!
Many thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of The Intern. #NetGalley #TheIntern #MicheleCampbell

This book was very fast paced and a fun legal thriller. I forsee it being an awesome movie! I haven't read much of Campbell's work, but this is the push I needed to check out more!

3.75stars—THE INTERN by Michele Campbell is a contemporary, adult , legal thriller focusing on law student Madison Rivera, and Judge Kathryn Conroy.
Told from omniscient third person perspectives (Madison and Kathryn) following several intersecting time lines, THE INTERN follows in the wake of Madison Rivera’s position as Judge Kathryn Conroy’s new intern. Madison Rivera is desperate to prove her brother’s innocence and with the revelation of Judge Conroy’s connections to the case, Madison is determined to uncover the truth behind her brother’s arrest and ultimately his accusations of corruption against everyone involved but all does not go according to plan when Madison finds herself blackmailed into working in the gray areas for the woman who is currently the gate keeper to her brother’s freedom . As the story progresses, Madison will find herself in the middle of a decades old investigation of betrayal, murder, and questionable law enforcement.
THE INTERN is a story of secrets and lies, power and control, betrayal and vengeance, blackmail and murder, family, double cross and deception. Akin and reminiscent of the television show ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, THE INTERN focuses on a community of law makers on the take, using their positions of power to control everyone who gets in the way. The thought provoking premise is dramatic, detailed, complex and multi-layered; the characters are questionable, devious, tragic and impassioned.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book started off a little slow, but once Madison started working for the judge things really picked up. This book was full of so many twists and turns. For the longest time I thought the judge was in on the conspiracy and really felt for her. This was a really good mystery and was thrilling.

I always wait with great anticipation for the newest Michele Campbell book and I was so excited to finally be able to read her newest book, The Intern. With the fall weather and of course being back in school fulltime, I am all about books from the dark academia genre. I always love the setting of a college campus and this was particularly engaging for me because the main character is also a graduate student. I can relate to the pressure to balance school work, grades, opportunities to advance your career, and family demands.
In The Intern, a Harvard law student lands the internship of a lifetime with one of her professors, but secrets buried deep in their pasts may threaten everything. Gripping!
About the Book | The Intern
This is a spoiler-free review so just note that these descriptions of characters only include the notable people mentioned in the first part of the book. I didn’t include other characters or information that may appear after the first part of the book in either section.
Characters
Madison Rivera is a law student at Harvard and is an intern for Judge Conroy. Her brother is Danny and he has pled guilty to drug charges he says he didn’t do. Her ex-boyfriend is Ty Evans. Ty’s current girlfriend is Chloe Kessler. Her father is Doug Kessler, a partner in a firm where Madison has a job lined up for next summer.
Kathryn Conroy is an esteemed judge who also teaches a course at Harvard Law School, her alma mater. Her late husband is Matthew. Lucy is her cat. Nancy is the case manager in her chambers. Kelsey is the receptionist. Imani and Sean are her law clerks. Olivia was a former intern.
Ricky Pena is the main defendant in Danny’s case. Detective Charles Wallace is the arresting officer. Raymond Logue is his attorney who convinced him to plead guilty.
Plot
Madison Rivera has worked hard to pull herself out from her humble upbringing and stay on track to achieve the life she dreams of. Since her aunt helped her enroll at Catholic Prep and she saw a former student and current judge Kathryn Croft come speak, Madison has known she wants to follow in the woman’s footsteps, from undergrad and law school at Harvard to a successful career as a lawyer.
Not only is Madison taking a course at Harvard Law taught by Justice Kathryn Conroy, she’s been invited to apply for her open internship. Madison couldn’t be happier about the internship, if only she wasn’t harboring some secrets of her own. Secrets from her past, that could cost her not just the internship, but the degree she has worked so hard for.
It turns out that Madison’s brother Danny took the fall for a drug bust—one he insists he is innocent of despite pleading guilty—and Kathryn is the judge assigned to the case. With allegations of corruption to the highest level, Madison agrees to try to get more information, but how can she do it without jeopardizing her own opportunity? It may not matter, as Madison soon discovers the judge may be hiding things as well.
Did Kathryn know who Madison was when she offered her the internship? And what is really going on in her chambers? Will Madison’s lies come back and destroy everything before Madison can find out what is really going on…
Review | The Intern
Told in alternating POVs, the book starts narrated by a law student named Madison Rivera. Madison is enamored by her law professor Kathryn Conroy, having seen her speak many years earlier at her Catholic Prep school. I was glad we quickly got context on Madison because I didn’t love the idea that this could have been a book about an obsessed student. That’s not what this book is at all, and I didn’t include the description from Goodreads intentionally because I thought it skewed that way.
Madison is very bright, hard-working, and often trapped between her own ambitions and her desire to help her family. This is particularly relevant when she accepts the internship for Kathryn Conroy even though she has realized Kathryn is the judge on her brother Danny’s case. Madison and Danny lost their father when they were young and their mother slipped away in grief for a lot of their childhood. This led to a different living situations where Madison thrived, but Danny spiraled further from the boy he was.
Madison takes the internship, even while she weighs the pros and cons. But it becomes clear quickly that something is strange about this internship. She hears rumors that the former intern Olivia was fired, but the law clerks act suspicious when she tries to ask about it. The background screening and non-disclosure agreements seem extreme, even for such a prestigious office. Even the clerks seem troubled by the additional screening for a lowly intern.
Late one evening, Madison and Kathryn are the last two in the office and Kathryn invites Madison to housesit for her and watch her cat over the weekend. Madison agrees, but a strange man arrives on the doorstep aggressively trying to reach the judge. Further, the judge asks Madison not to let him in and has her hold the phone up to the intercom so she can pretend to be home. I found myself wondering what exactly was going on in Kathryn Conroy’s life. Who was this man? And why is the judge so secretive and protective with her security?
From there we switch to Kathryn’s POV. I won’t spoil what we learn about Kathryn, but let’s just say both her past and present were fascinating. I was riveted by her chapters. Kathryn was mesmerizing even through the pages of the book. Her past is dark and there is a lot to learn about Judge Conroy. I liked how her story was revealed across the book, with more secrets and twists each time we revisited her story. It was interesting to get Madison’s take on the current events, then switch to Kathryn’s POV, eventually dovetailing to the same moment but from her perspective.
The deeper I got into this book, the harder it was to put it down. I had to know what would happen next! I was on the edge of my seat. Every single chapter turned the story and I was never fully certain who to trust. Each time I thought I had it figured out, something else would get thrown in and change everything. Gripping and easily my favorite book from Michele Campbell to date.
Thank you to St Martin’s Press for my copy. Opinions are my own.
