This was a fast-paced thriller that keeps you turning the page. It was easy to get invested in the characters. Madison is a Harvard Law student that receives an offer she can't resist - being an intern for her favorite judge, Kathryn Conway. Her brother Danny was just arrested and faces prison time, and since Madison knows this could impact her chances of getting the internship, she lies to the judge in her interview and omits the information on her employment application. Thus begins an internship that turns Madison's world upside down.

When the POV shifts to Kathryn, we see that her world is definitely not perfect. There is a lot going on in her life - from her difficult childhood through college and first job to her present job as a judge.

I found the entire book a compelling read, and the ending very satisfying. Even though I'm not a cat person, I did like Lucy and her 'role' in the book.

4 ⭐️ | this was a really well paced book. I loved how it was setup initially with Madison and then you start learning more and more about the judge. I really enjoyed how we got a bunch of background on Kathy, I think it’s definitely needed to understand her motives and choices. I liked the ending just wish it was a bit juicer.

Thank you to both #NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing me an advance copy of Michele Campbell’s latest #mysterythriller, The Intern, in exchange for an honest review.

What did I just read? #TheIntern is billed as an adult fiction #legalthriller that reads more like a YA novel. Problems are solved within the next sentence, the dialogue is cringe-worthy, and the protagonist Madison, who is supposedly a Harvard law student, only attends SecReg and has as much common sense as a tumbler of rocks. Seriously, what did I just read?

The story alternates between the perspectives of Madison and the judge she is interning for, Kathryn Conroy. I’m not sure who wrote the passages for Madison, but the tone is that of a middle schooler—both the writing and the character. It might be safer to shelve this as a YA should it stand any chance to receive positive reviews.

I really liked this book! I'm a big fan of the author's work and always gravitate towards her stories because she's such a great storyteller and writer. There was so much promise in this book. I couldn't put it down in the beginning, and I was really into the whole concept. The judge, the intern, her brother, and her mom- they all made for a fascinating read. I just had a hard time believing some parts of it. Like, seriously, the judge evading that many close calls and having her whole office involved? That was a bit of a stretch for me. Nevertheless, it was truly enjoyable and lots of fun. The twist of her having a child was just insane!

I recently had the chance to read The Intern from author @michelecampbellbooks and I really enjoyed it! Thanks so much to @booksparks for having me as part of #TheInternReviewTour.

As a fan of the author's previous books, I was excited to get the chance to read this. It was a class-driven thrilling suspense about family, murder, ambition and just how far one would be willing to go to get what they want. In the story, a Harvard law student named Madison falls under the spell of a charismatic judge/professor and lands an internship working for her. It's the job of a lifetime, but she has to keep a secret that could destroy her career. Her younger brother is arrested and the judge happens to be on his case. When her brother suddenly goes missing from prison after accusing the judge of corruption, Madison must decide if the judge is a mentor, a victim or a criminal. It quickly becomes a dangerous game of cat and mouse where somebody could end up dead.

Such a good legal thriller! I thought the character development was great. I liked that the story was told through both women's point of view. It gave insight into their lives as well as their decisions. The plot was well paced and it was a quick read. It really had my attention and kept me turning the pages. There were so many secrets, lies and shady characters and everything played out in a believable way. If this sounds good to you, I'd recommend picking it up on October 3!

What would you do if the person you idolized since you were an adolescent turned out to be nothing you expected ?

Madison has wanted to be Kathy since she taught a class when she was a teenager. She worked hard to get into law school in hopes to follow into Kathy’s steps; since Kathy is a well known federal judge.

Only when Madison is offered the internship of her dreams; it turns out, it’s nothing but a nightmare and she slowly learns the dark history that’s tainted Kathy’s life and lead Kathy down a path she never actually wanted in life.

We also learn what lead Kathy down the road she’s lead and all the dark twisted people pulling strings in the background: the corruption, secrets and lies are all brought to fruition.

Can Kathy finally escape the life she’s been trying to get out of? Will Madison still look up to her? Can she help Madison and her family or will they turn on each other?

This was a fast paced, page turner and I enjoyed how their lives crossed and how each woman did everything they could, even if it toed the line for their families.

Fantastic Legal Thriller that I Highly Recommend!
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I was over the moon when I received ARCs of Michele Campbell’s newest novel…audiobook and ebook! It’s wonderful to be able to alternate between the book and audio. The narrator did an excellent job of portraying all of the characters and I highly recommend it. The author is one of my favorites and I will happily read any of her books!

The two main characters are Judge Kathryn Conroy and Madison Rivera. Both women are badass and fierce, with dark secrets. We get to hear from each and get a look into the past, which brings the story together perfectly!

This is an excellent legal thriller with the omission of the customary courtroom setting. The characters are skillfully interlaced through organized crime and family. Once I started it, I couldn’t stop. The little mysteries within the main story are mesmerizing! And the ending is one of the best I’ve read.

Sincere thanks to St. Martins Press and Macmillan Audio for this complimentary ARC provided by NetGalley and Edelweiss. As always, all opinions are my own and are left voluntarily.

Fast paced, intriguing legal thriller! I have read and enjoyed all of Michelle Campbell books and this one was no exception. In this story Madison Rivera is a Harvard law student who has applied for a coveted internship with the highly admired professor and Judge, Kathryn Conroy. There is one major complication: Madison’s brother, Danny, is in prison for drug trafficking and Judge Kathryn oversaw his case. Madison and her mother suspect less than ethical behavior when her brother’s case was tried after he explains the details that sound a lot like he was framed. After landing this most esteemed position, Madison soon discovers that the Judge has a mysterious life containing secrets that just may be putting her in danger. It’s a twisty, windy road to untangle all the secrets, lies and pursuit of justice. Thank you Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review. This book will be available for purchase on October 3, 2023

“The Intern” is a nice mix of a family, legal, and mob thriller with characters you will love (my inner cat lady loves Lucy the cat) and characters you despise (yet like their dirtiness and what it brings to the story). Overall, a solid book.

What happens when family drags you into their bad decisions? When you don't know who to trust? When someone you look up to has a complicated past? In her new book, The Intern, Michele Campbell gives us ambition with a dose of corruption.

"Madison has always admired her law school professor, Judge Kathryn Conroy. She jumps at the chance to apply for an internship in the judge's chambers. But something is off about the office dynamic. She's also worried about her brother's current drug arrest.
Judge Conroy has a lot of secrets and a big problem. And she's pretty sure she can use an intern to solve it.

Because someone is asking questions..."

Campbell keeps the tension high and events moving quickly. I never knew what was coming. Once again, characters are making decisions that are terrible. Even when you ask yourself - "Would I do the same?" Madison has a brother that can't stay out of trouble. Kathryn has a family background that's full of people looking out for themselves. Now she's in too deep.
There are plenty of characters to dislike here. Nancy - big twist when you find out who she is. Charlie is awful and Ray may be worst of all.
There is a Brad character. He seems like a good guy but still gets blown up.

This is a book where Campbell makes you invested in the characters. I cared about what was happening. (I realize they're fictional) This would be a great beach read, but don't wait until summer. Read it now.

I wasn’t expecting much from this novel. So I was very surprised at how really good it turned out to be.

The story unfolds through multiple timelines with each chapter revealing layer upon layer of the past that shaped who the characters are in the present day. All of the players are well developed and fleshed out. I could picture each and everyone of them in my “mind’s eye.” At first I didn’t care for the two main characters. But as the story progressed, they evolved into relatable people that eventually captured my admiration.

The novel’s narrative is based on the premise of a corrupt legal system, with crooked lawyers, judges, and police officers. It is full of surprising and suspenseful plot twists that kept me on the edge of my seat. From one chapter to the next, there were unforeseen events at every turn that made for an unputdownable read. And with a heartfelt finale, The Intern is a novel definitely worth reading. Five solid stars. I’ll be sure to keep author, Michele Campbell on my radar.

I received a DRC from St. Martin’s Press through NetGalley. The review herein is completely my own and contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

The Intern was an addicting, hard to put down read!! Two strong, intelligent women are put into impossible situations by the awful people in their lives...and they make plenty of mistakes and missteps as well. At one point, I nearly threw the book because I was so annoyed with a main character's bad decision making, but I couldn't because I needed to know what happened next. It wrapped up a little too neatly, given all the variables and evil people in play, but that didn't ruin the book for me.

This book gave me such big How to Get Away with Murder vibes. A prestigious law internship leads to absolute chaos when secret after secret is revealed. I felt like this book started out really strong, but then got tangled up in all of its threads. Bits of the plot didn't feel realistic and the ending was rushed. It was fun while I was reading it and I absolutely had to know how it ended, but I wasn't head over heels for it.

Michele Campbell is becoming one of my favorite authors. Her latest book, The Intern, is a legal thriller that kept me engaged the entire time I was reading. There are twists throughout the book that will keep you reading to see what will happen next. There are several different things happening in the story, and each is equally interesting and riveting.

I received an ARC of The Intern in exchange for an honest review.

This one started a little bit slow for me but once it picked up I was all in. You get two viewpoints, Madison and Kathryn and i enjoyed both characters. There are quiet a few side characters as well and it was complex but once I figured out who was who and what their purpose in the story was I understood the need for so many different threads and angles. Some aspects of the fairly complicated plot seemed obvious but I didn’t have everything totally figured out. The suspense factor was high throughout the story and the tension only ramped up in the end, exactly what I like in a thriller. Overall a fun cat and mouse type of thriller that kept me engaged.

The Intern was a fun and entertaining read and kept my attention all the way through. A troubling look at the legal system and the people who either uphold it or distort it. Where one decision can lead you down a hole that you might never climb out of.

Madison is taking a Harvard class from her personal idol Judge Kathryn Convoy, when she is encouraged to apply for a position as her intern. But her excitement is quickly diminished when she finds out that her brother Danny has been arrested on a drug charge and the overseeing judge is the very same Kathryn Convoy. This opportunity exceeds her wildest dreams, but with the mounting pressure from her family to help, she is left with a difficult decision to accept her dream job or help Danny. Maybe she can do both?

Judge Convoy likes Madison and quickly befriends her, drawing her into a world of prestige, designer clothes, and fancy restaurants. Will their friendship be the help her family needs? Or is the judge setting her up? How far will Madison go to help her troubled brother?

This fast paced thriller will suck you in and leave your head spinning.

Have you been watching Suits? I'm loving the tv series, so this book was perfect for my current lawyer obsession.

Madison, a Harvard law student lands the internship of her dreams working for Judge Conroy but things quickly unravel when her brother is arrested and Judge Conroy is the Judge on his case.

I really enjoyed this book. I love Michele Campbell's books because they are all a slow burn where it feels like we are getting to know the characters really well, but the story is also building quietly.

I alternated between the audio and physical copy of this book and I would recommend the audio.

Madison is a top student at Harvard Law who is a real go-getter. One of her professors, Judge Conley, asks her to apply to be her intern and Madison is all in. But then she realizes that Judge Conley was the judge that her brother recently appeared before on a drug charge that will put him away for 10 years. But he’s innocent! Madison decides not to include that on her background check form and instantly compromises her integrity. If her omission is found out, she could be barred from joining a bar because she is lying by omission. She knows this but proceeds anyway. The judge is a strange character — she’s very chatty a bout student relationships, which was not really believable. Why would she care? If you are OK with over-the-top thrillers, this could be for you. It was a lot, but I suppose that was the point.
