Madison just landed the internship of a lifetime for a charismatic and reputable judge. But her secret regarding her brother's arrestation could destroy her career. When the judge goes missing after accusing her of corruption, Madison goes on a quest to find answers.
The plot of this legal mystery/thriller had me very curious. I recognized all of the ingredients for an unputdownable thriller, but I felt it was dragging and it kept loosing my attention. The main character's hesitations about everything were drawn out and redundant. The relationship between Madison and the judge is questionable at best. Madison's naiveté was annoying, it felt she was being deliberately oblivious and stupid. Safe to say this one was not for me. But I have read many great reviews, so if you're looking for a quick legal/crime/political thriller, it just might be for you!

The Intern
by: Michele Campbell
4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Madison has not had the easiest of childhoods. She is now at Harvard law school and gets the opportunity to intern for her professor who is her idol. Kathryn Conroy has taken Madison under her wing.

Madison’s mothers lets her know her brother has been arrested and it’s seems unreal. He swears he was set up. She realizes Kathryn is the judge on her brothers case. Madison’s mother is pressing her to find out more with her connection. Will Madison disclose to Kathryn her connection to the defendant?

Could the judge be setting up Madison? Is her brother guilty? This novel had so many twists that made for a fast paced novel for this lazy Sunday afternoon.

Thank you MacMillian Audio and Netgalley for this advanced audiobook. The narrator Sarah Mollo-Christensen was fabulous! This was my first by this author and I look forward to more by her. This novel is out October 3, 2023.

The Intern started a bit slow, but I was hooked in no time. Once the cat-and-mouse game began between these two smart and ambitious women I couldn’t put the book down. I also didn’t know who to root for. The twists and turns kept me guessing until the end.

Both main characters - Madison and Kathryn - are Harvard-educated, ambitious females with some major flaws. In the end, the story is about family, redemption, and succeeding - at any cost!

Thank you to @netgalley for my eARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book would make a Great movie!
I absolutely loved every minute here. Miss Campbell, you can move a pen (or cursor)!
The best way to describe this novel; gripping, addicting, filled with mystery and suspense, fast-paced, and easy to read. The dual POVs were so well placed throughout the book. There wasn't a lot of flip-flopping or mind-fuggery that can happen with dual POVs of 2 FMC. The story, backstory, and timeline were expertly pieced together and it all flowed quite nicely.

So, can you imagine meeting your childhood hero/idol, being personally asked to intern for her, have lunch with her, come to her home, get paid lots of cash to watch her cat.........AND risk your life for her? All while trying to free your innocent brother from jail, keep your worrisome mother from ending up in the hospital over a panic attack and stress, AND do your Law School Homework. OH, and not get arrested (or die) in the process.
Yeah well, such is the life of Maddison Rivera.
This is an unputdownable thriller that will keep you questioning who the real enemy is.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

While it took some time to pick up, at 20% the story finally grabbed me and I had a hard time putting it down. I didn’t like the Intern character, Madison, for someone that you’re told is smart (I mean, she’s a Harvard law student) she was super dumb and made terrible decisions over and over. But, I loved the character of the Judge and her story was what kept me hooked.

The dialogue was a bit wooden, and sure it was predictable, but overall it was an enjoyable popcorn thriller and I loved the way it ended.

3.5

Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this one!

Advanced Book Review! Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress for sending me this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
“A young Harvard law student falls under the spell of a charismatic judge in this thrilling novel about class, ambition, family and murder.”
I loved this book! It was definitely my idea of a great thriller and I couldn’t put it down. When Madison gets a job interning for her legal hero, Judge Kathryn Conroy, we learn that they each have secrets that could put them in a dangerous position and their fates are almost tied together.
I could fully feel the tension throughout the book and between Madison and Kathryn. I truly was not sure what was going to happen and several things happened that I wasn’t expecting, although I will say it tugged at my heartstrings more than I was expecting so maybe be prepared for that.
I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll keep this short. If you like legal thrillers, definitely pick this one up when it comes out in a few weeks.

The Intern by Michele Campbell is a fascinating, fast-paced novel about a Harvard law student who becomes enmeshed with her idol, her professor and federal judge, who may have nefarious ties.

Madison Rivera is an ambitious and clever second-year law student who is invited to intern for a federal judge, Kathryn Conroy. She quickly realizes things are not as they seem. At the same time, her brother has been falsely accused of a federal narcotics crime, and he may face 10 years in prison.

I loved the dual perspectives of two strong women. We're not sure who can be trusted, and the novel moves swiftly. Also pondered are how family, class, and background play a role in our lives. The audiobook narration is fantastic, with Sarah Mollo Christensen reading all the voices.

Thank you, NetGalley, and the publishers for providing this ebook and audiobook ARC. All thoughts are my own.

The Intern was a quick, fun and entertaining legal thriller that I ended up really enjoying! Written in dual POV with past and present timelines, I was hooked from the beginning and intrigued to see where the story was going to go. I wasn't sure how this one was going to end and how all the pieces would fit together given there were so many intricate details to keep track of, but was satisfied in the end. I enjoyed the writing style as well as the character development and there were multiple times that I was caught off guard while reading this one which I loved!

Overall, I enjoyed this one and rated it 4 stars! If you are looking for an entertaining legal thriller written in dual POV with past and present timelines that will hold your attention, check out The Intern (out October 3!).

I've missed Michele Campbell and her twisty,, never-quite-sure-what's-going-to-happen writing style. With The Intern, my opinion of Michele as one of my must-read, must-binge authors is further confirmed. I loved this book, right from the very first sentence. The interplay between a federal judge with secrets to hide and an intern trying to further her education while also trying to help her brother is fascinating, and, the more their lives become intertwined, the more addictive the plot becomes.

Madison Rivera, a young Harvard Law student, wants nothing more than to be accepted into Judge Kathryn Conroy's internship. But, both of these ladies are carrying around some dark secrets that could ruin their careers and put their families' lives in danger.

This was more than just a legal thriller. It was so suspenseful I could not stop reading. I'm not really into books with mobs, but I absolutely loved this one. I felt and was rooting for both Madison and Judge Kathryn. The ending was absolutely amazing, and my favorite character in the book was Lucy the cat, I loved her! Definitely add this one to your list if you love edge of your seat suspenseful thrillers!

Ok, this was so fun and suspenseful! It was 2 stories in 1 and it was fun to follow. You had Kathy’s story, then Madison’s, then the 2 of theirs together. I’m not the biggest legal thriller lover, but I do enjoy the thrill of reading about the corrupt system. I thought this book was well written and easy to follow. The ending tied everything together for me.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC!

Madison Rivera seems to have everything; she’s a promising year-two legal student at Harvard and brilliant in the classroom. Behind the scenes is a different story. Her brother Danny is in trouble with the law, and their mother is sick with worry.

By a strange turn of events, Danny’s judge happens to be one of Madison’s professors. And strange event #2, Judge Conroy has just asked Madison to apply for an internship with her.

It turns into a bit of a cat-and-mouse game, with the judge using Madison for her own means and Madison wanting to stay on the judge’s good side. Can the judge be trusted, or will she also turn on Madison to save herself?

I did enjoy getting the judge’s story in alternating parts. Otherwise, I would not have had much sympathy or understanding of her character. All of the characters make mistakes, but that makes them seem like real people. Although, at times, I yelled at them!

I liked the Boston setting of this one. It bordered on over-the-top at the end, but I enjoyed the journey. The visit to the financial aid office at the very end takes the cake!

This book was a high stakes situation and I really enjoyed the ride. It was a little too convenient wrap up at the end - allegedly there was a much larger organization behind the key players in the book, but only the key players were dealt with in the end...someone somewhere would've caught up and gotten some sort of punishment. Overall, though, I enjoyed the plot, the characters and the story.

Another fast-paced and compelling read from Michele Campbell. This time she offers readers a legal drama where a young Harvard law student, Madison Rivera, is approached by one of her class professors, prestigious Judge Kathryn Conroy, to be her new intern. Something doesn't seem quite right about the offer to Madison, (why me?) but Conroy is the woman who inspired her to be a lawyer, and this opportunity will not only have huge impacts on her own career, but it could also help her fix a tough family situation as well. Madison accepts the job. She doesn't have a clue what she's getting herself into.

Kathryn Conroy has secret motives of her own for offering Madison the internship. Tangled up in something she hasn't been able to escape despite her many attempts, she hopes she can use Madison as a means to finally break free.

Can the two women work together to advance their own motives? How can you trust someone who has lied to you from your first meeting? Turns out, you can and will do a lot of things when your life or the lives of your family are at stake. Do they each come out alive?

This is an engaging suspense read with a quick pace. A good, entertaining read. 3.5* rounded up to 4 stars.

My thanks to St. Martin's Press for allowing me to read a DRC via NetGalley. Publication is set for 10/3/23. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and are freely given.

This was a good legal thriller. The Intern tells the story of Madison, a Harvard law student, who becomes Judge Kathryn Conroy’s newest intern. Things get messy when she realizes that her brother is arrested and charged for a crime he didn’t commit and Conroy is the judge on the case. Madison finds out that Judge Conroy is a little suspicious.. and so is the lawyer and cops on her brother’s case. Madison needs to help her brother .. but Judge Conroy also needs help, saving herself.
.
I am not the biggest fans of legal thrillers and I was skeptical when I started reading this book but I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the ending and the twist.

This is a good book to cuddle up on the couch with for a weekend. Thank you to @stmartinspress and @netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review! The Intern will be published on October 3, 2023.

This was a really interesting thriller that took several twists and turns. Some I suspected and some I didn’t suspect at all. I like the dual POV and how it broken into different parts based on the POV.

I did have a little trouble staying focused after reading Kathryn’s first POV (part 2), and I overall found her pov to be the more interesting one. Especially after learning so much of her backstory. And parts of it were a little convoluted and complicated.

But overall a highly interesting thriller that kept me wanting to find out more.

Wow, what a powerfully mesmerizing legal thriller this turned out to be. This book captured my attention from the very first page until the very unique ending. Madison Rivera is studying to be a lawyer and one of her instructors is Judge Kathryn Conroy whom she idolizes. Kathryn suggests to Madison that she apply for an internship in her office which she does and she gets. Madison's brother Danny is framed for a drug charge and the judge that is in charge of his case is Kathryn. Lots of thrilling and strange things happened in this book which kept me on the edge of my seat. Both Madison and Kathryn came from similar backgrounds which also made this a very interesting read. If you love a great legal thriller, you will really enjoy this one.

Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC of this super exciting book that I really enjoyed.
