Thank you so much for an advanced copy of The Intern! This was a fast paced book that I read in almost one sitting.

First, I really enjoyed how fast-paced the story is. It is told from dual POVs, and the story clipped along in a way in which the reader just had to keep reading. There's a lot that happens in the story; people do bad things for the wrong reasons, and to me, the story held an element of suspense throughout. I was really interested in the characters, especially the two POV characters.

That being said, the writing felt a bit first-drafty as I read, and I didn't really find anything new in the story. It was interesting and engaging, but it wasn't anything that really blew me away honestly.

This book completely absorbed me. The author did an amazing job of giving the two main characters backstories, without weighing down the book or using too much detail.
This book is a crime thriller from the perspectives of the Judge and her intern. I'm interested to read other books by this author.

The Gist: I would say it’s more of twisty legal drama than a thriller, but I really enjoyed this story about a law student who gets entangled in the complex world of a prominent judge. Comes out in October and I think it will be a great fall read!

Synopsis: Madison Rivera lands the internship of a lifetime working for Judge Kathryn Conroy. But Madison has a secret that could destroy her career. Her troubled younger brother Danny has been arrested, and Conroy is the judge on his case. When Danny goes missing after accusing the judge of corruption, Madison’s quest for answers brings her deep into the judge’s world. As the two women circle each other in a dangerous cat-and-mouse game, will they save each other, or will betrayal leave one of them dead?

The Good: I really enjoyed the dual POV alternating between Madison Rivera and Judge Conroy and thought the pacing was great. I was intrigued from the start and wanted to know what was going to happen next. The characters were nicely developed and I loved that the scenarios they found themselves in weren’t over-the-top ridiculous or completely unrealistic, which I feel like happens often with crime thrillers.

The Not-So-Good: Honestly not much! I do wish it had been a tiny bit more suspenseful, but I think that’s because I was expecting more of a thriller.

Final Thoughts: I really enjoyed it! I kept thinking it would make a great tv series. Definitely recommend adding it to your fall TBR if you enjoy legal thrillers or dramas.

Thank you Netgalley, St. Martin's Press, and author Michelle Campbell for the opportunity to read the eARC in exchange for an honest review!

Madison Rivera is a go-getter Harvard Law student who has federal Judge Kathryn Conroy as her role model in becoming a lawyer ever since she was a kid. As Madison was given the chance to apply as Judge Conroy's intern, she had to make a choice whether to divulge a personal information that might most likely put her future career into the dumpster or be transparent about it. Story unfolds and upon landing the spot as an intern, Madison was able to take a closer look on what transpires in the life of Judge Conroy that makes Madison question her credibility and possible connection to criminals.

My thoughts: I certainly enjoyed this legal thriller! The story has two POVs - both of Kathryn and Madison - and I liked how their characters are being paralleled without looking far-fetched. I enjoyed reading the conflict, every character's predicament and how it all came together in the end. The story progressed naturally, and the emotion of these main characters were felt as I was reading it. Overall, I am giving it 4.5 stars! I would love to see this as a TV show! The Intern releases Oct 3rd!

I don't typically go for legal thrillers but The Intern is a book that cannot be missed. I loved the alternative voices that switch throughout the book and the judge's backstory. There are many twists and turns that were well-executed. The drama starts and is unrelenting. Thanks for the advance review copy.

This is a very good book! Michelle Campbell is definitely a go-to author for me and I have read several of her books. The story takes place in and around Cambridge, Mass., and features Judge Conroy, and her intern, Madison. It is a complex and suspenseful story, easy to follow and a page-turner. No spoilers! Recommended!

I really really liked this one!

A legal thriller that had you on the edge of your seat the entire book.
I loved the back and forth/cat and mouse actions between the two main characters. Both strong females each after what’s most important to them.

It was fast paced, it was super suspenseful, and creepy, and I couldn’t read this fast enough to find out what happens. Little twists along the way made it hard to predict, which i love!

Definitely recommending this to others!

Thank you again NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the opportunity to read this first!

4 rounded up to 4.5 stars

This is a gripping thriller that excels in every aspect. The seamless flow of the narrative and the perfectly paced pages kept me engrossed throughout. The twisted premise and intricate plot ensured I couldn't set the book aside.

Madison Rivera's fascination with her Harvard Law school teacher, Judge Kathryn Conroy, leads her to pursue an intern position for the judge, an opportunity she'll stop at nothing to seize. It would be a huge stepping stone to further her future career. But while applying, there are some things she conveniently forgets to mention about her family that can end her chances if discovered.

As Madison dives into her role, she keeps her own secret hidden but also questions the judge's involvement in suspicious activities.

When Madison's brother who was recently arrested disappears, she discovers the judge played a part in his case and the story takes a riveting turn.

Madison becomes a pawn in this perilous game and must race to expose the truth. Corruption and danger engulf Madison, revealing a web of deceit that threatens not only her future but also her life.

This was an electrifying tale of suspense that masterfully combines secrets, corruption, and life-threatening stakes.

This book did not disappoint me at all.

You read this book through twos pov's, Madison, a Harvard law student who gets her dream to be an intern to Kathryn ( second pov), but when her brother get arrested for drug charges, and learns that katryn is assigned to the case, she realizes that her brothers fate is in her hands. Madison being a good sister she is decides to do a little investigating but ends up finding more than she bargained for. And for Kathryn, let's just say she's interesting to say the least.

The Intern definitely kept me on my toes. I enjoyed every twist and turn that Campbell wrote in this book.

Thank you to the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for a review. I've read Michele Campbell's earlier works and was very excited to pick this one up. It did not disappoint!

Madison is a student at Harvard Law who gets more than she bargained for when she elects to join an internship for her role model Professor Kathryn Conroy. Conroy is very mysterious and aloof and it takes Madison some time to figure the professor out. I will say that as much as I enjoyed the fast pacing of the story, I did have a hard time figuring out the character of Kathryn Conroy. The book does dive into her backstory so you find out where she is coming from but I did find her character to be confusing and ultimately unlikeable. Maybe she was a little too aloof and icy? Madison is also struggling with the recent drug arrest of her brother who she presumes is innocent. Before long she finds out that the professor may be more involved than she initially thought. This one kept me guessing until the very end!

The Intern is a great legal thriller, it's fast paced and so suspenseful I was anxious the entire time. I refused to put it down until I finished, I freaking loved it. I work in the legal field so I was fascinated by the plot and the setting, including the characters; a Harvard law student and a Judge, brilliant!

The twists were placed ever so strategically so when a few were revealed, my jaw actually dropped.

Fingers crossed for a series adaptation, it would be pretty awesome!

Huge thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC in exchange for a review.

DNF at 35%. I can't. The writing was too cheesy for me and both Kathryn and Madison annoyed me so much.

This book got off to a really great start and I really connected with both Madison and Kathryn but the ending felt very under-developed.

The best thing about this book was the depiction of the law student, Madison, and how her rose-tinted view of the legal system is shattered. The author (who, after finishing the book, I learned is a former federal prosecutor) does a really good job at depicting the morally grey tactics used by prosecutors in attempting to “flip” witnesses. It felt super gritty and realistic without being melodramatic.

The first issue was how the reader is constantly told that there is a vast conspiracy but never shown it. We are told that the mob has people “on the inside” at every level who can track Madison and Kathryn’s every move but they only interact with three people. And once those three people are taken care of, suddenly everything is solved and Madison is free from the mob.

This leads into the second issue which is character agency or lack thereof. The resolution of the plot is not due to the actions of either main character but rather the sudden change of heart from a side character. This was such a letdown because neither Madison nor Kathryn ever outsmart the mob but are rather “saved.”

A minor gripe that I have is that I feel like it’s somewhat tacky to be namedropping brands throughout the book. Doordash, Instacart, etc are mentioned multiple times when a generic term (eg: takeout, grocery delivery) would have been just as good. I don’t think these brands actually sponsored the book but it reminded me of bad product placement in movies.

Overall, it was a solid book and a definite page-turner.

Thank you NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was an interesting legal thriller but unfortunately I didn’t mesh well with this one. It was a little slow for my liking and a bit too long, but it did have a good premise. I also didn’t really feel connected to the characters. I will still be checking out this author again though!

Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this eARC!

This was a fast paced, suspenseful thriller—a federal judge’s intern slowly realizing the woman she idolized is “dirty” and involved with the mob. If you like that sort of storyline, it would be enjoyable, as the judge tries to figure out how to extricate herself from the far-reaching grasp of the mob and uses her unsuspecting (at first) intern to help her. Unfortunately I don’t love those kind of stories, and it kind of lost me at the end.

This is definitely different but it moved at a slower pace than I prefer and I felt like it was too long. I just couldn't vibe with the story because it seemed so outlandish and ended up feeling more like a political struggle session at times than a legal drama.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review.

Is this a political thriller that is built around female mentorship or manipulation? That is the question. And who better to write it than Michele Campbell. With Ms. Campbell's personal knowledge of the court system, the criminal aspects of the story along with the justice system ring true bringing a realistic structure and atmosphere to The Intern.
Two women, the Intern Madison Rivera and Judge Kathryn Conroy, who has invited Rivera to apply for an internship, are connected by more than the obvious. Both having familial issues that reach back to their youth that threaten their current careers and possibly their lives and those they love.
These two women have to figure out who they can trust while knowing they are being watched and followed by law enforcement and criminal enterprises that may run close to, if not within the family.
Read if you enjoy political thrillers, women empowerment, family ties, unreliable protagonists, and maybe cats.

Thank you to St. Martin Press for access to an early e-copy via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
