Shari Lapena is an automatic buy for me, and this book did not disappoint!
Once I started this book, I could not put it down just like all of her others.

Stanhope is a small, safe neighbourhood until one day, 9 year old Avery Wooler goes missing after school.
Everyone on the block has an opinion, pointing fingers at each other. Everyone has big secrets and everyone is truly lying.
This book leaves you guessing with all the twists until the very end.

Thank you Netgalley and penguin random house Canada for this ARC.

The book follows the police investigation of missing nine year old Avery, initially suspecting William, her father, who is having a secret affair with Nora, a neighbour down the street and volunteer at the hospital where he works as a doctor. Nora ends the affair and the plot snowballs from there. I enjoyed the main characters, primary the two having an affair, both of their families, their realistic emotional states, suspicions and actions. I could empathize with families going through this type of situation. The novel is a fast paced read with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, unable to determine where the story is taking us. A very fun read! 5 out of 5 stars.

Im a Shari Lapena superfan. I've read all of her books to date and I've loved all of them...

That being said let's talk about Everyone Here Is Lying. I enjoyed the writing, the multiple POVs, and the twists and turns (as always). Unfortunately there is just one trope for me that I hate and it was used in EHIL (I can't say what that is without giving everything away). Until the twist was revealed about 2/3 of the way through, I was completed enthralled and could not put this one down.

I know lots of people will love this one, especially my fellow thriller addicts and Shari Lapena fans, I'm sad to say it wasn't for me.

Thank you Penguin Random House and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I'll start by saying that I went into this book very hyped, as one does getting an ARC for a Shari Lapena novel 😍

This book is as fast paced as they come, plot driven...to the extreme. Shari Lapena has a specific style that I really enjoy, but the sheer quantity of characters and the fact that I wasn't rooting for any of them was a bit disconcerting for me. I enjoyed following the suspense, and the twist at around 60% did get me, but all in all this one fell flat for me. I would've enjoyed a smidge more character building and a few less characters and I think it would've made a world of difference in my review.

Where is Avery? Lies, lies and more lies. They are revealed as the story unfolds. Full of mystery, Everyone Here Is Lying is a twisted thriller with a creepy ending. It will keep you guessing and wondering who is telling the truth. A definitive page-turner I couldn’t put down. The main story is a difficult one, the disappearance of a missing 9-year-old child.

In a nice peaceful neighborhood, a little girl goes missing after an altercation with her father. The neighbors and police work together to try to find her. Many juicy secrets and lies ensue.

This is a solid 4 star read for me. The abrupt ending left a little bit to be desired and I'm hoping there will be a sequel to this, like Lisa Jewel's The Family Upstairs.

I don't want to say too much about this, it's best to go in blind, but it is very similar in topic to another recent bestseller by AA. If you know, you know! All told, I loved this book, it's a page turner, not without it's storytelling flaws but still a winner with it's plot.

Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this and review this book.

Thank you Net Galley for an ARC of Everyone Here is Lying. This book doesn’t live up to my expectations of the author. Although, it is an ARC, this book is is in desperate need of editing. The different characters jump around in each chapter, making the story confusing. Suddenly, after a few short paragraphs, the author is in another conversation, in a completely different place.

Thank you so much to NetGalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for an honest review.

This story follows several characters who live on the same street with lives that intermingle. Our story begins with Nora and William ending their affair. When William returns home heartbroken he sees his young and very difficult daughter home alone from choir early. He is angry with her, he strikes her and leaves the house. Avery then goes missing and we’re along for the ride as we learn more about all the characters and try to find out what has happened to Avery. This book was decent. The beginning I felt was slow and in the middle things started to pick up. Once we had been let in on what was going on I again felt the plot slow down. The ending wasn’t tied together enough for me and the plot was slow. Overall 3 stars.

Shari Lapena never disappoints. If you are looking for a page-turning, pulpy, domestic thriller this book is definitely for you.

The omniscient pov for all the characters help make this book utterly captivating. This is exactly what I am looking for when I want a quick read thriller to burn through in the middle of the ~literature~ I tend to read. Almost perfect at what it was trying to do. And that ending!!

Big thankyou to netgalley and the publishers for the arc. Publication expected July 20th 2023.

Overall good book. Fast paced, decent character development - though I admit the more I got to know some of the characters the less I liked them. Enough twists to keep you second guessing even when I had started to piece a little together. Without given anything away - when things started to be revealed I was slightly skeptical of where the story was going but it did circle back on track. Overall a good book.

Thank you NetGalley for sharing this book. The title doesn't lie and kept me on the edge of my seat. If you like a thriller, a abook you cannot put down, this is a good one. There were a lot of twists.I need to finish a book with missing children as quickly as possible.

Shari Lapena delivers her usual page turner here, but with the slightly better overall crafting. I did become engaged with the characters, although, not totally understanding on the problems they actually faced prior to the main event of the story. I was happily going along, with my own theories in the background when half way through, the cat is let out of the bag. I was surprised at Lapena's technique here, but kept reading. It was worth it, as there were enough extenuating circumstances to keep my interest up.
I do feel it is important to mention that Avery doesn't totally come across as a child of her age or difficulties, and feel a bit more research would have enhanced this tale. I may come back later with quotes once the novel is out for publication, but for now am leaving it as a general comment.
The book does work, though, and I think will not disappoint her fans.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

BEEP BEEP! HONDA CIVIC RELIABLE READ COMIN THRU!

Writing: unique | Plot: straight-forward | Ending: my fave part

SYNOPSIS

Stanhope is supposed to be a safe place, but the disappearance of 9-year-old Avery reveals a dark side to the close-knit community.

MY OPINION

This is my second from Shari Lapena; I dubbed Someone We Know a Honda Civic Reliable as well. This book deploys the same fragmented and minimalist prose as Someone We Know, which I quite enjoy compared to long-winding similes. It's an easy read to buss out on a sunny afternoon while you work on your tan—don't forget your sunscreen though. Skin cancer and sun spots ain't cute bookstahoes! Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Anyways, the plot isn't anything original but I like that it was straight-forward and didn't try to do TOO much. I mean, it does kind do a lot around the 65% mark, but I felt the whackadoodle behaviour was explained well enough. If you're looking for character development or world-building, keep on looking 😂 It's as MIA as my father's love. Bloop.

Lapena's storytelling is as sparse as her prose. If you like to be told the eye/hair colour and smell of a character's farts, good luck. You'll have to use your imagination on this one. There is a 'police procedural' element here, but the finer details (or even the basic ones let's be honest) are left out. This is all about the characters' actions and the unfolding secrets. It's really a 'all plots, no thoughts' vibe but... in a good way? Idk I'm explaining this as poorly as a Stacy Willingham simile. (Sorry for the driveby Stace)

In my unhinged opinny, the strongest part of the book was from 65% onward. I wasn't expecting it to go that direction, but I'm glad I did. Tbh had me feeling a lil uneasy. No spoilers but it will remind you of a very popular thriller.

All in all, this is your standard popcorn 'suspense.' It won't be one for the record books, but it didn't irk tf outta me which is always a good sign. It's like the Switzerland of suspense books 😂

PROS AND CONS

Pros: simple prose, straight-forward but entertaining plot, solid ending

Cons: barebones storytelling, no character development, limited character backstories

A page turner from the first chapter. A riveting physiological thriller that really kept me guessing, it could have been any one of the cast of characters and then the twist - wow. The ending was In a way satisfying and unsatisfying, but in a good way.
Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada, DoubledsyCanada and NetGalley for the advanced copy.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for this read. I’ve been a fan of Shari Lapena since The Couple Next Door, so I was thrilled to be able to read her newest mystery and I’ll say it didn’t not disappoint. Imagine your child goes missing, everyone becomes a suspect; and suddenly things that everyone thought they new is completely turned upside down. Quickly we learn of the Wooler family, their daughter Avery has gone missing. Pure worry, the entir neighbour hood is turned upside down. Who took this girl? Secrets come out, fingers get pointed and families fall apart. It’s a book that easily could go a few different ways, each person with different reason why they would want to take Avery; but maybe not all is what it seems? Maybe evil is closer to home. I enjoyed this book, I quickly devoured it and couldn’t put it down. If you’ve read Shari’s others books, you’ll definitely enjoy this one. One little criticism is maybe there are too many suspects, too many characters. It’s as if she was trying to get you to purposefully look left even though you knew something was going on towards the right. Almost forced. Other than that it was a quick, suspenseful read that fans of Shari will love.

I read this book within an afternoon/evening. It was very hard to put down and when I had to I was thinking of the book and what could possibly happen next in this edge of your seat mystery.

With the amount of characters Shari focuses on in the book each one is as relevant to the next. With surprises coming at you left and right you are left wondering what is actually going to happen.

That being said the ending did feel a bit rushed and I would love to have read another chapter or even an epilogue of six months later the result of the events that happened.

This book comes out at the end of July and I hope you add it to your TBR list immediately!

Another great quick read by Shari Lapena. I am a fan of many of her books. I found the ending a bit abrupt but overall I enjoyed following all the characters and you can’t go wrong with a little neighbourhood he said she said. I would rate this a 3.75 stars.

Everyone Here is Lying is aptly named, as you have no idea who is telling the truth and what secrets they are holding. Nine year old Avery has gone missing after leaving school, and having an interaction with her dad. At first her dad, William, is a suspect, then others in the neighbourhood become suspects. Lies spiral out of control, and everyone starts to wonder who they can trust in their neighbourhood.

I don't know if anyone in this book was a "likeable" character, but it did not hinder my enjoyment at all. Lapena writes an intriguing thriller, where we are left trying to figure out what is going on, who is telling the truth and who did what. She is the queen of misdirection and led us down one path, only to prove it wrong and lead us another direction. I was constantly second (and third) guessing myself and what I knew throughout.

This was a quick read, and I found it hard to put it down. I found myself saying "just one more chapter" multiple times, as I could not wait to see what twists and turns were happening. The drama made for a great read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

Overall, this was an excellent domestic thriller by Lapena. Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for a copy of this book. All opinions are 100% mine.
