Fun little set of samples that really helps make me want to read more and more. So that is the best thing and I look forward to seeing more samples that give me an idea of what books to read.

Page Street YA 2023 Chapter Sampler contains sample chapters from Take a Bow, Noah Mitchell by Tobias Mitchell, Last Sunrise in Eterna by Amparo Ortiz, The Alchemy of Moonlight by David Ferraro, Don't Ask If I'm Okay by Jessica Kara, Damned If You Do by Alex Brown, A Prayer for Vengeance by Leanne Schwartz, When Ghosts Call Us Home by Katya de Becerra and Being Ace edited by Madeline Dyer. This sampler was a great way to discover new YA authors which is a genre I have started reading a lot more of recently.

Take a Bow, Noah Mitchell is a queer romance between two teenagers who meet through online gaming. I like the premise of this story and it sounds like it will be a very sweet read however I found the writing in the extract a little more immature than what I usually go for and I wasn't a fan of the dialogue so I don't think I personally would enjoy the rest of the book.

Last Sunrise in Eterna is a fantasy about three teenagers who try to learn the magic of the elves. Usually I'm not a huge fan of fantasy however I found this extract really easy to understand and quite entertaining so I might pick up the rest of this book if I'm in the mood for something slightly different to what I would usually read.

The Alchemy of Moonlight is a gothic fantasy. I found the synopsis quite difficult to understand so I was quite hesitant going into the extract. For me I found the writing style of the extract to be quite jerky due to the amount of short sentences and it didn't captivate me in any way to make me want to keep reading.

Don't Ask If I'm Okay is a contemporary fiction novel which explores grief. I was very intrigued by the title of this book and the extract definitely didn't disappoint. I loved the emotion that was portrayed in the extract and I loved that the author didn't shy away from making it extremely raw and realistic. I will definitely be reading the rest of this book as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Damned If You Do is a paranormal fantasy novel in which a high school stage manager accidently sells her soul to a demon. The premise of this sounded really unique however I wasn't keen on the writing style in the extract, particularly the dialogue which felt quite cheesy and unnatural. Therefore I don't think this book is for me.

A Prayer for Vengeance is a fantasy novel based on mythology. I found the extract quite difficult to follow and I wasn't immediately drawn into the story so I'm not sure if I would continue reading this book. However I think more seasoned fantasy readers would enjoy the representation in this book.

When Ghosts Call Us Home is a gothic horror novel. The synopsis of this book sounded really interesting and I loved the atmosphere the extract created. The extract also jumps straight into the story and I definitely want to continue this book.

Being Ace is an anthology of stories across different genres which all feature asexual love and connection. Its difficult to get a sense of the whole collection just from an extract from one of the stories however I do feel that this is an extremely important book and one I will definitely be picking up in the future!

I enjoy reading these little excerpts of books to be released soon. Even though my TBR pile can't take anymore I keep adding more!

Thank you NetGalley and Page Street for providing me with an eARC of the Page Street YA 2023 Chapter Sampler. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was a lot of fun to read! This sampler included a chapter from several new books that have either already come out this year or will be coming out later in 2023!

I’m so excited by these teaser chapters! Three of these books are books I plan to read as soon as possible (and I will discuss them in no particular order).

The first is Damned If You Do by Alex Brown. It’s about a seventeen year old stage manager who accidentally sells her soul to a demon who finds her again and offers another deal so she can get her soul back. The first chapter was hilarious and I’m so intrigued to find out what happens next.

The second is Being Ace: An Anthology of Queer, Trans, Femme, and Disabled Stories of Asexual Love and Connection edited by Madeline Dyer. The story included in this sampler is “Across the Stars” and it’s by Akemi Dawn Bowman. It’s about an asexual teen who’s trying to replace a part of a robot containing a precious family memory and is guided through a journey into space by another teen.

The third is When Ghosts Call Us Home by Katya de Becerra. Years ago, Sophia starred in a film for her sister, Layla. The film became a cult classic because the internet debated whether or not there was a real ghost in the scary film. Now, Layla is missing and Sophia has set out to their old house to find the clues to her sister’s disappearance. This sounds like it’s going to be a sort of haunted house gothic type of story and I can’t wait to read it in its full.

I, admittedly, came here for Last Sunrise in Eterna and it delivered. I mostly skimmed the rest, but I noticed a few really great first lines, which was fun!

I loved reading this sampler as an opportunity to check out some upcoming titles and think I might have found some new favourites. All the books seem really promising and my tbr keeps growing. I would have loved a short synopsis for each of the stories, though.

this chapter sampler of page streets ya releases of 2023 was an absolute delight to read! i didnt know that page street was starting a ya imprint before this, but im so glad to hear that they are! i wrote a few sentences about each chapter included in this sampler:
- take a bow, noah mitchell by tobias madden
i *loved* this first chapter! the book is about a teenage boy who doesnt have any friends, except for his one online friend, who he is also crushing on. i know this was just a very short chapter but i can also already tell that im going to love the portrayal of online friendships through games and fandoms, and im also already invested in how the mc and li's relationship will progress. i had only heard the name of this one till now but the first chapter alone has captivated me and ive already added it to my tbr!
- last sunrise in eterna by amparo ortiz
i was already interested in this author and this book so im glad that i got the chance to read a chapter of it! i can tell that ill love this, and id love to read it very soon. also the mc has the same name as my grandma so of course i already love her.
- the alchemy of moonlight by david ferraro
id never heard of this one before but i think ill like it! i loved the writing style and narration and the mc seems to be an interesting character. added it to my tbr!
- dont ask if im okay by jessica kara
id also never heard of this before but i think ill like it based off of the first chapter! added it to my tbr and excited to get to it soon.
- damned if you do by alex brown
i knew id love this as soon as i read the first chapter's title and im happy to report that i seem to be right! not much happened in this first chapter but the premise and synopsis looks very interesting as well so im excited to see where this one goes.
- a prayer for vengeance by leanne schwartz
unfortunately i got a bit bored while reading this so i didnt read all of it but i might give it another try sometime!
- when ghosts call us home by katya de becerra
this one might be the one im the most interested in! the concept just seems so cool and made me want to continue on and read the whole book, i need the rest right now and hopefully ill get to it soon!
- being ace, an anthology
this one was also one i had already heard of and was interested in so im glad that i got to read the first short story (by akemi dawn bowman) included in this anthology! super excited to read the other stories in it as well.
overall, i loved most of what i read in this chapter sampler, and im so excited to see what this new imprint will bring in the future, though im already pretty sure itll become one of my favorites if their currently published books are any sign! the only complaint i could possibly have about this sampler is that i wish it included more chapters of each book, so that readers can truly get a feel for the book theyre trying out! im looking forward to reading all of these books in full or requesting the arcs!
thank you to the publisher page street ya and netgalley for providing me with a free e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed having the chance to read these fall 2023 titles releasing from Page Street. I've heard about quite a few of these books, and it was great to be able to get an early sneak peek at them. Of these books, I am very interested in When Ghosts Call Us Home! This sampler introduced me to new authors and helped me add some new books to my TBR. My only issue with this collection was that the samples were quite short, and I think the stories could have benefitted from having one more additional chapter so readers can get a better idea of these books and see if they like them.

Well, I now have a few more books to add to my neverending TBR after devouring this sampler!!! That is always a good thing!

This is such a great way to try out a few upcoming books and maybe some new authors. It'd be nice to have a synopsis included for each story as well.

Thank you to the author and the publisher for this ARC through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

This was a sampler, but I loved the Damned If I Do by Alex Brown. AMAZING! I cannot wait to read the rest of that book. It had the slightly 1990s feel of teen horror TV series but mixed with modern queer longing. LOVED IT!
