I’ve read one of Samantha Irby’s essay collections before, and I find her really funny, but there were a few in this collection that were just very long lists and not especially interesting. In particular, the one reviewing individual episodes of Sex and the City had me swiping through my Kindle without reading eventually. A little bit of an edit here and there and I would have loved this because Irby is such a great writer.

Samantha Irby is one of my favourite essayists and this book did not disappoint. She made me snort-laugh at some point I’m pretty much every chapter, and I had a blast reading it. I particularly enjoyed the essays reflecting on Sex and the City and how to get along with cool teens. She is a gem.

Started off strong, kind of lost me in the middle (I now need to watch SATC) and finished the job off well- so authentically herself and highly entertaining.

I agree with a previous reviewer that I enjoyed the beginning of Quietly Hostile by Samantha Irby more and liked the later essays less. Some of the essays were funny and relatable and others less so.

Quietly Hostile is a new book of essays by writer Samantha Irby. It's sort of random musings and you'll be familiar with the style if you've read her other books. I found it enjoyable and amusing but I wouldn't rush to recommend it if you don't know her other work.

I really enjoyed the essays in the first part of the book, but felt that the momentum gave way towards the end which was such a shame. The title really drew me in and I'll definitely read whatever Sam publishes next!
