Rough Waters, by Heather C. Markham, is an emotional and inspiring novel about facing the challenges of growing up and learning to navigate life’s difficulties.

The story follows Kathryn Ross, a seventeen-year-old high school student living in a small town in Iowa. Growing up in a religious household, Kathryn feels like she has no control over her own life and is constantly striving to please her parents. She feels trapped and is desperate to find a way to spread her wings and find her own path. Despite her attempts to break free, tragedies in her family force Kathryn to put her needs aside and care for her younger brother, which leads her to even more difficult choices and struggles.

The author does an excellent job of capturing Kathryn’s inner turmoil and growth. Through her story, readers are given a clear view into the struggles many young adults face today. Markham’s vivid descriptions of Kathryn’s hometown, her family dynamics, and unique friendships truly bring the story to life. The characters’ emotions and relationships are portrayed realistically and compassionately.
