Loved this book! I am all for a cozy mystery, especially a book set in Scotland. I loved the main character and the setting. Excited to read more from this series.

I found this novel to be quirky and fun, albeit a little cheesy at times. I absolutely loved the setting in rural Scotland, especially the living quarters and office situated in a converted church. I also appreciated the bits of humor sprinkled throughout. The narrator of the audio version did a fair job switching back and forth between the main character's American accent and the accents of the locals. All in all, it made for a good cozy mystery, and I look forward to the next installment to see what Dr. McRoy gets up to next.

I throughly enjoyed the audible edition of An American in Scotland. Fun, fast pace mystery about Dr. Emilia McRoy who leaves her ER practice in Seattle to the small town of Sea Isle, Scotland, She quickly stumbles upon a dead body on her first day in the new town and soon is involved in a mystery to find the murderers, She keeps quite busy making new friends, establishing her medical practice which includes being the town doctor and being the island coroner and helping the local constable solve the crime. I love audible books and thank you NetGalley for providing this book. I hope the author writes more about Sea Isle, Scotland.

An American in Scotland is the first in a new series written by Lucy Connelly and narrated by Kimberly M. Wetherell. It’s a captivating mystery that takes listeners on a journey to the small town of Sea Isle, Scotland. The book is expertly narrated by Wetherell, who perfectly captures the essence of the story and transports the listener to Scotland.

Dr. Emilia McRoy, a doctor of emergency medicine from Seattle, has come to Scotland to escape her past and to serve as the local physician. Within hours of her arrival, she stumbles upon the body of a man who had harassed her in the local pub shortly before. She should have read the fine print in her contract since it seems that in addition to being the town’s physician, she is also the coroner, which compels her to uncover the truth behind the murder.

As she investigates the crime, Emilia begins to bond with the townspeople and forms close friendships with her assistant and the manager of the local pub. While she’s not exactly sure about Laird Ewan Campbell, also the local constable, he does have a knack for turning up when she needs assistance.

The setting of Sea Isle, Scotland is beautifully described, and Connelly's writing transports the listener right into the heart of this charming town. The narrator, Kimberly M. Wetherell, does an excellent job of bringing the story to life with her expressive and engaging voice. She captures the essence of each character and delivers the story with emotion and passion, making it easy for the listener to become fully immersed in their world. (I reviewed an advance reader/listener copy and all opinions are my own.) I am already anticipating the next in this series.

Suspense: 4/5
Drama: 2/5

Cry factor: 0/5
Romance: 0/5
Chemistry: 1/5
Spice: 0/5 (it's a clean one y'all)
Foul language: 1/5

How I felt:
- I listened to the audio book for this one and I loved the narrator. She was brilliant with the Scottish accent (in my view, I've never been to Scotland). The narrator did all the characters well, and there were a lot of characters to do and she managed the change well.
- The story as interesting, kept me wanting to know more about the village and the people living there. Especially the mysterious Constable, so much to learn from his character!
- Emilia's new friends were absolutely adorable. The group of ladies gave me laugh out loud moments when they got together. It was a real pleasure reading about their adventures together.
- I am a romance reader, so I was hoping to have some speck of that in this book. There was non, but that didn't make me lose interest. The mystery was cozy and it kept me invested in the story and the characters.

Overall:
- This is a clean, cozy mystery, with a village full of suspects and motives to have committed the crime. So you keep guessing who the killer is. I had three characters on my list and one of them was the killer!
- If you're looking for a romance suspense book, this is not for you. But I'd still give it a try, it will keep those pages turning.
- If you are starting to read a mystery book, this cozy one would be a good choice for you.

Tropes:
- Cozy mystery
- Mature characters
- Doctor FMC
- Small town
- Murder mystery
- Big list of suspects
- Handsome Constable

We all have a worst day of our life, but it doesn't often propel us into a cross-country job change to escape the pain we feel, yet that's exactly what Dr. Emilia McRoy, our intrepid heroine chooses to do in order to find a new start. A cozy little mystery romance plunges us immediately into a whodunnit. The action is steady, the characters are plentiful, though we are made to feel like we're part of a pretty close-knit community pretty soon in her time in Scotland's picturesque village. The benefits of the town include a handsome, yet annoying laird/constable/billionaire with multiple mansion, who holds the health and wealth of the town on his well-toned shoulders.

If you're looking for a simple, yet fun little jaunt through the Scottish countryside and dip your toes into a bit of mystery, then this might be for you. Expect your brave heroine to brush off danger a little too haphazardly though to the point of ridiculousness. And expect your new bff's to hold tight to their side-character romanticism. And be prepared for lots of equally ridiculously attractive men to be paraded through the entire tale.

I enjoyed the narration by Kimberly M. Wetherell, who switched pretty naturally between the Scottish brogues, British lilts, and curt American English accents. She helped the story flow continuously and provided that bit of suspense around the clues we discover throughout. If rated on narration alone, I'd probably give this a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.

This was good but didn't blow me away. A cozy mystery overall, and the narrator did a great job.

I really liked this book. I liked the whole concept of leaving America and going to Scotland to be a Dr in a small town. When she arrived in Scotland, the home of one of her ancestors, she came across a murder victim.. Who did it and why? This book is a good book for YA as well as adults.

A great novel embracing local Scottish island life and American enthusiasm in a tale of murder and deception created with a stormy backdrop. Healthy and warming in many ways.

Oh my gosh this book was amazing. I loved the thrill of this book. The fact that it starts off with a murder was very interesting. I love how it unraveled the secrets and stories to figure out who had actually committed the murder. I love how the town was with the Dr. The story and characters are amazing.

Setting the Scene: Dr. Emilia McRoy sets her hopes for a quiet peaceful new start on Sea Isle, Scotland, leaving the demands of the ER in Seattle, as well as the reminders of her personal heartbreak, for the life of a small town doctor. Those hopes are dashed when she stumbles upon a body shortly after her arrival and soon begins to receive threats, presumably from the killer. Add to that the unexpected duty of coroner that she had overlooked in her contract, and this is not at all what she bargained for when she upended her life to move across the world. On the other hand, the people of Sea Isle are, for the most part, welcoming and lovely, and immensely grateful to have a local doctor again. She soon finds herself with a loyal set of friends unlike anything she had in Seattle; friends who are more than willing to help with her investigation, an investigation she believes is part of her duties as the coroner, much to the constable's dismay. The question is, will they be enough to keep her alive and living on Sea Isle.

What I Thought; This is a gem of a new cozy mystery series that left me wanting more. As a first-in-series, there is some background and description narrative necessary to introduce the people and places, but it is not overdone. I could see myself visiting, perhaps even settling down in Sea isle. The characters are relatable and well developed. Emilia ("Em" to her friends) is intelligent, caring, and quite good at what she does. While the authority for her investigation may be a bit questionable to the local constabulary, she sees it as necessary to doing her job as coroner. At least that's her story, and she is sticking to it. I found it amusing that Em relies heavily on both her ER experience and the multitude of BritBox mysteries she has watched over the years for her investigation.. That she manages to do it without neglecting her duties as the sole doctor to the village and surrounding area, is admirable, and probably due, in part, to a little help from her newfound friends, each of whom has her own unique story and responsibilities. More importantly, they provide relationships that Em did not even know she needed. Of course, there are potential love interests, but these are likely to be very slow burns given Em's past. Only time will tell. I can wait, but not too long. By the time I finished the book, I had laughed and cried, and was left with both a warm feeling and a desire for more. This has all the elements of an amazing book and promising series.

Kimberly M. Wetherell's narration brought the characters to life and was instrumental in my enjoyment of this book.

When Amelia McRoy move to Scotland she was excited for her new life but while on a treck to get to know the area the rain started coming down in droves. She was lucky enough to find what she thought was a cabin in the woods but her luck soon ran out when she also found the dead body of smithie. When leaving the shelter she ran in to Ewing the head constable in Scottish layered and gorgeous all get out! Unfortunately Amelia and Ewing get off on the wrong foot and although they will come to have to work closely together and will definitely respect each other it seems he always tends to get under her skin. Because she quickly learns that snithy was murdered and soon she start getting threatening letters of her own. The longer she’s there however the more she likes the area her new friends and especially her new home but will Amelia live long enough to enjoy it all or will the murderer make good on his threats? I don’t think I have ever read a book that made me want to pack my bags and go to that location but I want to visit the pig and whistle I want to be friends with Sandy get a look at hot dirty to Ewing and get a check up from Dr. Amelia. I love this book and cannot wait for the second one this is a book I honestly didn’t want to put down it is a cozy mystery that is interesting and the authors talents keep you wanting to turn the pages or in my case continue listening as I listen to the audiobook and found the narrator to be so good I love her so much! This is a definite five star read/listen and one I highly recommend. I received this book from NetGalley in dreamscape media but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

My only question is, How? How is this American doctor moving to Scotland no problem? How did she obtain a work visa? How is her medical license tranferring to a new country no problem? How did a scottish head hunter scout an american? How is a white woman in the US *shocked* to find out through a DNA test that she is part scottish? This book felt so dumb. I have lived abroad and I have gone through the visa process and it sucks. I recently got a new passport and it sucks. This book makes the heroine seem a little impulsive and I just could not get past the questions I had about how this would be possible.

An American In Scotland: A Scottish Isle Mystery #1
Lucy Connelly
Dr. Emilia McRoy left her position in a busy emergency room for life as a small town doctor on Sea Isle, Scotland. Her immediate family are all deceased, and she wants a quieter life. Some of her ancestors were from the small island and she would like to find out more about them. The residents reached out to her immediately making her feel welcome. Her office and living quarters are in an old church. Her practice has all the up to date equipment she could have asked for. The town is not allowed to charge her for any food or drink. She had barely stepped into town when she discovered a dead body. She didn’t read the fine print when she signed her contract and had not idea she was not only the new doctor in town but also the coroner. The local constable is Larid Ewan Campbell; when he speaks, he expects everyone to listen. The body of the deceased disappears before she can do the autopsy. Someone sends threatening letters to Emilia.
I love this book. I am sure this will be a new series and a successful one at that. The characters are quirky. My favorite is Ewan and Em. I am sure that as the series progresses there will be a bit of a romance between the two. One of the things I loved about this tale is the humor and comedy. I couldn’t help but laugh out loud. Much of the humor comes from the quirky characters. Em is feisty, plucky and daring. This is a cozy mystery at its best!
