I used to live in New York State and would visit New York City often. I moved away and after more than 12 years got to return. Upon my return, I did many of the walks in this book. What a treat!!! I loved learning about things that I did not know. I liked to walk by familiar things and learn something new. I think that this is a great read for anyone that wants to learn something different about New York City. It is a fun take on a city that many people know and love. I would definitely buy this book so that I could complete some of the walks I did not get a chance to do. I definitely recommend this book to people that love to travel.

This book was really cool! I enjoyed the layout of the book, which groups locations by section of the city with a map of a suggestion route to walk. This makes touring the areas easy and efficient for any traveler. It also makes it easy to adjust and edit the routes if there are any locations you would prefer to focus on over others, There is a wide variety of locations mentioned in the book that should satisfy any particular interests readers may have. Some locations are more obscure than others too, so you may find new attractions even if you have been to the city before. I'd recommend this book to anyone visiting the city looking for ideas on what to do!

I've lived in NY my whole life so was curious to see if there were some walks that I was not familiar with and there were... Thanks and will take them all! This is what I love about NY and will also use as a Big Apple Greeter for people visiting

I received this eARC from NetGalley and the publisher in return for an honest review.

This travel book is for those who want to explore by walking and using their imaginations rather than being entertained by the standard tourist spots.

There are 12 Manhattan walks, ranging from the southern end to Harlem. Distances range from just under 2 miles to more than 5.5 miles, each with dozens of spots. Each of the walks provides insight into how the use and culture has evolved over time by identifying Idiosyncratic sites of historical, economic, and cultural interest. Locations spotlighted include such things as:

-The borders of New Amsterdam: the East River along Broad Street and the fortified wall at the North edge of the community, along what is now…Wall Street.
-Locations where movie scenes were shot, such as for The Godfather movies and Ghost.
-Where there used to be a pond, Collect Pond, in lower Manhattan.
-Random observations, such as where the first gallery in Soho used to be located and areas that used to be frequented by prostitutes and are now locations for high end real estate owned by celebrities.
-Buildings with interesting architectural details or where historical events happened.
-There are more traditional tourist sites included, such as the Federal Hall National Monument, site of George Washington’s inauguration; and another building that houses the National Museum of the American Indian.
-Public art, such as “Subway Map Floating on a New York Sidewalk” or the former location of the highly controversial “Tilted Arc” in the 1980s.
-Churches and other institutions that served immigration communities.
-Former homes of celebrities such as Miles Davis and Billie Holiday.
-And so much more–totaling more than 500.

I look forward to using some of these walks as blueprints for exploring Manhattan neighborhoods.

As a person who loves to travel and enjoys finding wonderful new things to do, this book gave me so many ideas on great walks within New York.

Covering history, food, locations and so much more I have started filling up my notebook with fun things to do while walking in New York on my next trip to the USA. There is culture, architecture and interesting stories that make New York so much more interesting than what I had expected.

This is definitely the book to have when visiting New York and I will be using it very soon.
