There are some authors I have come to know for their signature writing style or tropes they are known for, and I rely on them for that. Ruth Ware, known for being the "Agatha Christie of our time," is one of those authors, with her unputdownable, fast, tightly woven thrillers that keep me on my toes. She strays from that Agatha Christie feel and creates an adrenaline-driven action but predictable story that missed the mark for me with Zero Days. While I love being surprised by authors trying something different, Zero Days didn't surprise me in a good way.

Zero Days started out strong with one of my favorite tropes, race against time, as Jake races to clear her name and find her husband's murderer before the law catches up with her. I was on the edge of my seat with the story's fast pace until we were told of Jake's every move, and that slowed down the story so much that I started to lose interest. When something did happen, it felt predictable rather than layered, unlike Ruth Ware's usual tightly layered twists and turns I love.

Even though this was not the best for me, I still love Ruth Ware and think Zero Days is worth the read if you like an adrenaline-driven chase over the suspense of who did it and why.

Jack and her husband Gabe are pen testers. After completing an assignment together Jack comes home to find her husbands been murdered. Jack becomes a suspect in Gabe’s death, so she goes off grid to find out what really happened to Gabe.

I really enjoyed this Ruth Ware book. The storyline was unique, with loads of twists. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.

Zero Days, Ruth Ware
Out now!

Mere pages in and I knew from the digital arc that I had to buy a physical copy of #zerodaysbook

Ruth Ware is one of my favourite thriller authors who continually delivers on creating stories that play on the depths of our social and interactional lives with each other and the social constructs in which we live. Adding to psychological elements is Ruth’s uncanny way of picking up on and digging into bits that we engage with that unknowingly could place us at risk. Turning the now mundane activities like being on our phones, downloading an app, or using shared locations with our kids - Into a playground for hackers and terrorists alike. And not only would we not know, we would have let them in the front door ourselves. Agatha Christie meets #blackmirror

Thank you to Simon and Schuster and NetGalley for my digital ARC!

Thank you to NetGalley, Ruth Ware and Simon and Schuster Canada for the free ebook in exchange for an honest review.

This was one of my new favourites from Ware! So easy to get into, loads of action and twists! I really enjoyed the pacing and how we quickly fall into the story - right into the action wondering what’s happening! Definitely recommend.

This books feels like a departure from Ware's typical writing but the quality of her writing is still the same. It's like reading an action movie. I think this book will bring a wider audience to Ware's books. It definitely made me go and delete a whole bunch of apps off my phone!

I would like to thank Net Galley and Simon and Schuster Canada for an ARC version to review.

Jack performs scrutinization tests of a company's security system by infiltrating the building and creating an appraisal to report back to clients. Gabe is the voice in her ear, her guide and savior when a job goes south, she relies on her husband to convey the most critical information in a time of crisis.

One night when a job goes sour Jack is caught by the police. She feels defeated and frustrated as she returns home to reassess the nights adventure. Her husband has gone dark, he hasn't answered her calls or texts and that voice in her head is now telling her that something is definitely wrong. Jack returns home to find her husband in a pool of blood, brutally while killed sitting at his computer. Jack can't believe what has happened, and when the police arrive it seems like she is their main suspect.

Jack has no choice but to go on the run. There will be grand consequences for her leaving, however she must find out what has happened, and who killed her husband. With an exhausting effort Jack now significantly injured maneuvers through town evading the police with help from friends and family. Who can she trust? She must stay alive and discover the truth before everything comes crashing down around her.

Ruth Ware steps out of the box to provide a new, creative thriller with dynamic, action-packed escapades. I really enjoyed this new adventure. It was fast and easy to read with action throughout. The "twists" were often easy to guess, however the journey was worth the ride.

Ruth Ware has always been one of my favourite thriller/mystery authors and Zero Days did not disappoint! It was fast paced and such a page turner. I don't want to spoil it but it is definitely a new fav of hers!

Jack and Gabe make a great team.
They are penetration specialists, hired by companies to expose weaknesses in their security. Jack breaks in and Gabe hacks their systems.

When a routine job goes sideways, Jack returns home late to find her husband has been brutally murdered.
When it is clear she is suspected of the crime, Jack goes on the run determined to clear her name and find the real killer.

This was a fast paced thriller that while predictable, was a fun, albeit unrealistic ride.
I really enjoyed the beginning of the book, but after Jack goes on the run a lot of the feats she performs were on the unbelievable side, it made the rest of the book slightly less enjoyable for me.
But as a whole this was still an entertaining read.

Zero Days is a mystery thriller. It is my 7th book by this author.

Ruth Ware has become a thriller queen. I look forward to reading her latest book every year. So I was very excited to read this new book.

The female narrator is Jack. She is racing to figure out a mystery that is extremely important to her.

The book begins with an exciting break in. And then continues with police chases and lots of drama.

I was very interested in Jacinda/Jack's job. She was a pen tester who breaks into buildings to show companies their vulnerabilities. Her husband Gabe focused on the hacking security part.

I enjoyed this book. However I still don't really understand what the title means. And I didn't understand a lot of the hacking/security stuff. And I don't like seeing people so injured.

What I did enjoy was a female heroine and a female detective. I am a bit surprised that we didn't get the detective's POV. That could have been interesting.

It was still an exciting read. And it was a quick fast paced story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for this read. I was excited to get this read but it turned out to be something that I did not enjoy. The starting was odd and then as it went on I was wondering what age are these people. I do not know. I really do not know how to review this book because it was really odd for me as I think the author was trying to branch out in a direction that she was not really ready to execute.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read an ARC of Zero Days by Ruth Ware!

I enjoyed this book. I will start off by saying it is quite different from her other books (I’ve read them all!) but it is still quite enjoyable. I like trying to figure out ‘who did it’ and I was able to so I wasn’t surprised at the reveal. If you enjoy suspense and mystery thrillers this would be a good book for you.

Fast paced, tense, unputdownable with a badass woman that will stop at nothing to find her husbands killer! I completely devoured this book! I couldn’t get enough.
My only comment is I figured out the whodunit early on, but the more I think about it the more I think that maybe it wasn’t supposed to be a total mind blown moment. Either way, the book was still fantastic!

Although this book started a bit slowly, it sure turned into a page turner! I loved the twists even thought I had guessed the killer fairly early one! I love Ruth Ware books and this one is no exception! Definitely recommend!

I've always been a fan of Ruth Ware, I really enjoy her thrillers. This book was no exception. I liked the main character and found her interesting. Of course, the main character makes a lot of decisions I would not, but that makes for a better story! I found the story to be a little bit too techy though. I had trouble understanding some of the technical aspects of the storyline. Overall 4 stars! Thank you for the chance to pre-read this!

Jack and Gabe are hired to test the security of businesses, but when Gabe is found murdered and Jack is the prime suspect, she must find the real killer before she ends up in jail for a crime she didn’t commit.

This is a fast paced whodunnit. There are lots of twists and turns, but ultimately, I felt this was a bit too predictable and I found the starting chapter very long.

The story is more character driven, but this led to repetitiveness I felt. Also, I didn’t really think there was a lot of authenticity in Jack. She was just hard to like.

I was interested enough to keep reading though.

Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

While entertaining, this book did not seem like a typical Ruth Ware novel. I love her books because the writing is stellar. This one felt more like a lacklustre attempt at originality. The plot is certainly interesting but the execution fell short, the ending was easy to predict, and at times the writing felt somewhat juvenile. I’m not sure what happened here.

Zero Days is a middle-of-the-road thriller, but it won’t be a memorable read for me.

Jack and her husband Gabe test company security systems by breaking into them. Jack handles the physical breaking-in while Gabe hacks the digital end.

After completing a job, Jack heads home to find Gabe brutally murdered. In no time at all, Jack becomes a person of interest. But Jack is innocent and decides to evade arrest.

This thriller starts out a bit slow but eventually picks up the pace. It’s told entirely from Jack’s perspective.

Initially, I wasn’t a big fan of Jack. She makes some truly ill-advised decisions, like running from authorities while being interviewed at the police station. And the flirty banter between her and her husband was cringeworthy, even though I’m aware it was supposed to demonstrate their love for each other. But she eventually grew on me with her persistence to find the truth.

The murder reveal was predictable, but I still felt compelled to keep reading.

I’ve enjoyed previous books by the author, but this one felt average. I’ll still definitely read future books.

This is a departure from Ruth Ware’s gothic, atmospheric psychological thriller reads. Rather, it is a story about a woman, Jack, on the run after someone murders her husband and she is the only suspect. It’s an action movie type of book with the reader rooting for the likeable Jack to elude the police and figure out who killed her husband. Like some action movies, there are some unbelievable moments as Jack, seriously injured, is able to do some of the physical things she does and the narrow escapes she has. She is a feisty, action heroine à la Jason Bourne.

The easy to read writing style and quick moving story kept my interest throughout and although one of the twists was obvious quite early on, it did not take away from the enjoyment of the plot. I liked the clever use of the time countdown frame as a way to structure the novel although what it meant didn’t become clear until near the end.

This novel has received mixed reviews but I really enjoyed it - it entertained and kept me engaged, rooting for the main character. This novel has been optioned for series development by Universal International Studios and I can well see how the story could translate very well onto the screen.

Thanka to @simonschusterca and @netgalley for this complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

Jack and her husband, Gabe, are hired by companies to break into buildings and hack security systems. They are the best in the game, but after one of their gigs, something goes horribly wrong, and when Jack comes home after getting arrested on the job she finds Gabe dead. Of course, she is the prime suspect. Who can she trust to get her out of this mess?
This is the latest Ruth Ware mystery/thriller. This author is very hit-or-miss for me and I am sorry to say that this one was a miss. It was very repetitive, the same information was given over and over again. It's not a very long book (it's under 400 pages), but at about 15% in I had figured out who the culprit was and that the book was about a 100 pages too long. I did not like the main character, Jack. She was way too impulsive and made very questionable decisions. I do get that she is grieving, and her grief as being a motive for her actions is mentioned a few times but I really didn't feel it. There is no depth to her, and there is no character development during the book. If you are ready to suspend disbelief and are looking for a quick read with lots of chasing scenes? This one may be for you.
I received an advance review copy of this book for free and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
