Having finished this, I’d say it’s a thoughtful, slightly unconventional coming-of-age story. Mary is a really interesting protagonist—bright and lively, but also a bit naïve at times—which makes her encounters with the various “sirens” and manipulative figures feel both suspenseful and almost allegorical. I liked how the novel doesn’t just focus on romance or teenage drama; it delves into philosophical territory, particularly the tension between self-discovery and external pressures.
The pacing is uneven at moments, and some of the language leans lofty, but Mary’s growth is satisfying. Her courage and moral compass keep the story grounded, and watching her navigate these challenges while also forming a genuine connection with the lonely student makes her arc feel earned. Overall, it’s a reflective, slightly cerebral read that rewards patience, and I’d give it a solid 7/10 for its mix of philosophical depth and emotional resonance.

The writing in this book I would say is very interesting. And honestly I struggled with it at times, it does tend to suit the book as you go along but I did notice myself struggling with it. Theres a ton of references to things like Shakespeare so if you love Shakespeare this book is absolutely perfect for you. Marys character was also super interesting! I'm glad I read a different genre then I usually read and came out of my little bubble because if I didn't I never would've gotten to read this story!
