Thank you to Netgalley and the author for the opportunity to read and review this picture book for my students. This story is one that I would recommend for middle to upper elementary students due to some of the imagery and thematic elements along with parents. I love that it talked about pretending and imagination but sometimes it could be distracting. I also enjoyed the photos after the story to be able to see after the story. My only issue is that it's not a great SPEECH specific story  for articulation students due to having too many sounds for it to be used. Because of these points, I have to give this a 4 out of 5 stars

This one was so much fun! I love that the author based it on a true story including real-life photographs of his family. I really enjoyed this children's tale that really happened! Highly Recommend it! I am reviewing this for Net Galley. I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This proved to be a pretty pleasant look at a child's imagination – when she and her father enter a ramshackle toy store she thinks of a lot of the things as special, and magical. But doesn't what follows prove that they are? Many a child would like to think of themselves as the daughter of a heroic knightly fellow, and perhaps they would want to be a kind-hearted unicorn, and this girl does that and more, based on the simple exercise of the two walking home together. The artwork clearly conveys the real world and the imagination, and the parallels between the two, and certainly adds a richness to the page. I wouldn't call it a timeless classic, but it's a strong debut effort from the author, and is an enjoyable little tale.

Super cute story, and like that it had recognizable places from NY park. Teaching kids to be generous and kind.

the pictures are really cute, the story is also interesting, it's simple that there is a child and a father who want to go home, but there is a magical experience that they face, and the mission is to save a cute white dog

A slightly silly but cute book. It's fun to see a story full of pretend. Some of the images were confusing (showing the character more than once) but the children all enjoyed the story.

A fun adventure with a Father and his daughter on what was supposed to be a simple walk. Loved the illustrations.

This was so sweet! I loved this story where the girl's imagination was able to just run free; even if her dad wasn't on board at the start!

It's such a great story for kids to always remember you can create anything and turn any bad situation, like a rainy day, into something magical.

First let me start by saying wow! I hope this author writes more books. The little girl is relatable for other children and also for adults who loved to use their imagination when they were younger. An adventurous story that will keep you reading to the very last page. The illustrations are amazing as well.

"Unicorn for a Day" is Golan Vaknin's first children's book, but you wouldn't be able to tell that by reading it. The prose is clear and easy to read, and accompanied by beautiful drawings. The story is a father and daughter's very "unordinary" walk home from school. Rather than taking the typical route home, they take a slight detour and find a magical toy shop. Naomi, of course, finds the most magical of all the beautiful things when her father can see only junk. With the magical "shield" in hand, really a red umbrella, they continue their adventure through the enchanted forest... or is it just a park?

"Unicorn for a Day" might just be telling the story of a walk home, but through the eyes of Naomi and the drawings that accompany the story it's easy to recapture the sense of wonder of childhood. Maybe the puppy you save isn't a puppy at all, but a baby white dragon. Maybe you are the knight in shining armor come to the rescue. Your days can become unordinary, it's all just in the way that you look at things.

This is such a good reminder of the place fiction has in our lives, and how easy it can be to recapture it. Hell, maybe fiction is the truer version of events now and again...

This book is adorable, the illustrations are fun and detailed. The story is sweet and might just inspire a few young writers to use compose their own fantastic stories.

Omg! This book is so beautiful and magical!

I absolutely love the illustrations. Reminds me so much of my fairy tale childhood memories.

The story is about a little girl visiting a toy shop which has old mysterious items. She finds an old umbrella and lo! A magical journey begins!

I love how imaginative this short book is filled with amazing artwork. Love the father daughter activity and bonding here.

Get it when it comes out. It’s incredibly beautiful!

Thank you, Gilani Vaknin, for the advance reading copy.

This was really fun! Realistic illustrations and definitely a story I could see my child creating. My daughter loved the lost puppy and we've spent the afternoon finding toys in a pretend store and then helping lost animals on our way home. Opened up imagination for us too!
My only critique would be that I was a little frustrated by Abigail running away from her dad several times even after he told her to stop. She seemed a lot too old to still be struggling with that simple rule? We had to talk about how that's not safe etc to make sure it was addressed because it happens like 3 times.
