If you were coming of age in the early 2000s, odds are you watched 13 Going On 30. Not only was this a box office hit, but it begged the question what would you do if you woke up in the future?

Woke Up Like This is Amy Lea’s answer to the time-travel romance genre.

Charlotte (Char) Wu, is a type A high schooler. She is more concerned with checking off her to-do list than being popular. But when she unexpectedly wakes up 17 years in the future with golden boy, J. T. Renner (her arch-enemy), they must work together to get back to present day before it is too late.

Woke Up Like This does a phenomenal job of capturing the insecurities surrounding graduation. For most, it is the first time they will leave home and be truly on their own. As a result, they must figure out who they are, what they believe, and who matters. Witnessing Charlotte’s journey was both heartbreaking and empowering.

Mindy’s Book Studio (Mindy Kaling) is responsible for publishing this book. It does a terrific job of giving voices to minorities who are often overlooked. I especially loved the main love story revolving around an interracial couple. We need literature to be more inclusive and catch up with the times.

Special thanks to Netgalley, Amy Lea, and Mindy’s Book Studio for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest feedback. Fingers crossed Kaling will adapt this into either a series or movie!!!

Woke Up Like This is a fun YA book, by an all-star author. Charlotte and Renner clash as teenagers, so imagine Charlotte's surprise when she falls off a ladder and suddenly finds herself 30 and engaged to Renner.

What I loved about this book was that the two main characters were on the journey together, both having jumped into the future and worked together to return to their younger selves.

This is a very cute book, and has a fun storyline. It's similar to the movie '13 Going On 30' but I personally prefer this book to the movie.

Very well written, super cute engaging and overall a great book.

Super charming time travel romance. I don't know if this is technically supposed to be categorized as YA, but with half-ish of the book taking place while the characters are teens and the entire book being with their teenage brains in control, it definitely has a YA feel and is one I'd hand to teen readers. However, there will still be plenty of appeal for adult readers as they grapple with grown people's problems. An excellent book overall.

Very charming, little YA novel! There are a few slow spots in the story, but overall it's a light read that will help you unwind. Pleasured 👍🏼

This book was so adorable!
If you love 2000s/2010s teen romcoms, you need to pick up this book, because it felt designed for those of us who grew up loving those movies! It also gave me the same vibes as many of my favorite books, especially 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘴 and 𝘚𝘦𝘦 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘠𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘺!

Charlotte is probably one of my favorite main characters of a contemporary YA book I’ve ever read! She felt like a real teenager while also not having the negative stereotypes usually given to YA heroines. She also felt complex, being Type A while also acknowledging where being Type A has failed her in her life and in her relationships. I also thought that her having complicated relationships with both of her parents felt very realistic.

The way friendships were portrayed in this book was very refreshing! I think anyone who was at any point a teenage girl can think of at least one friendship that they could relate to Charlotte and Kassie’s. I know that I had a best friend in high school that I haven’t talked to since we graduated. It’s such a realistic portrayal of how some friendships aren’t meant to last, but that doesn’t mean that you hold any ill will towards those people. Also, I love Char and Renner’s friend group in the future. I hope I have a group of friends like that when I’m 30!

I absolutely loved Charlotte and Renner together! Their scenes together were both funny and adorable! The only thing I would say may be missing from this book is a few more CharRenner chapters, but beyond wishing there was more of them, I loved them!

I loved Amy Lea’s fresh spin on a 13 Going on 30 premise. Charlotte as the FMC was endearing and relatable, and she learned how to enjoy the moments on the journey, rather than strictly being concerned about the end expectation.

Review of “Woke Up Like This” by Amy Lea

3,75 ⭐️

This was a very sweet, 13 going on 30 vibed, YA-romance that I really had a good time with. I thought this book did exactly what it needed to do and it was altogether very cute 🥹

This story follows J.T. and Charlotte in high school in 2024 and as adults in 2037. When Charlotte hits her head, she’s transported into the future, aged 30 in 2037, where she and J.T. have to figure out what the heck happened to them. I liked both the 2024 plotline as the 2037 one.

Perfect for readers craving a cute little romance, that’s quick to read and has no spice (which, honestly, I crave every now and then) 💘

I just really loved this book. I ate it up from start to finish. I laughed, I swooned. It gives the perfect 13 Going on 30 vibes. I can’t confidently say it is my favorite if Amy’s books and I’m so excited to see more YA from her in the future!

Wow! I didn’t read any synopsis before starting this one, and it completely took me by surprise! Loved the characters. Char and JT are both awesome, both of their character developments were great. I had no idea this was a 13 Going On 30 style time warp, but I absolutely loved that we get a look at what happens when they go back to their current time. I feel like that part was missing from that movie, and it brought so much more to this story. I had so many feels, and I couldn’t put it down! Highly recommended!

The cutest time travel about letting go of expectations and hurt feelings to let friends in and to step into your future. I'm usually too literal for time travel stories but Lea nailed the wistful feelings of high school and the nostalgia of adulthood. The Big Feelings of 17 year olds who have complicated relationships with their parents were so accurate.

Thank you NetGalley for this arc!

Ended up giving this a DNF at 53%
I really liked the start of this book and then the time jump happened and my interest just disappeared. I loved Amy lea’s previous adult romance books and was super excited to read her ya romance, I believe I would have loved this book if the time jump just didn’t happen.
I love the way she writes characters and the banter is amazing and I will continue to read her books when they release but this one just fell flat for me.

I found this to be a fun story! Charlotte and Renner find themselves 13 years in the future. How did they get there? Amy Lea took me back to the feelings of high school anxiety, but I loved watching it all come together. Charlotte and Renner, each were endearing to me in their own way, and I was rooting for them throughout the whole story! Thank you to NetGalley and Mindy's Book Studio for an advanced copy! All thoughts and opinions are my own!

The cover is stunning.! This was a fun read. I wished there were more chapters of them together. It also felt like the FMC was holding a grudge for longer than necessary so that kind of bugged me a little.

Thanks to Netgalley and Mindy’s Book Studio for the ARC of this 13 Going on 30 enemies to lovers story

This was cute! The ending felt a little rushed, but overall I liked the feelings behind the story. Charlotte’s Mom insisting that she was missing out on the best experiences of her life in high school, though, 😂😂.

Wow. Such a great book! It gave 13 going on 30 vibes and I was such a fun read. The note at the end made the ending to the book perfect. It felt like a letter I would have wanted to wright to my 30 year old self.

I was privileged to receive an ARC of this book and it was such a fun read! The teeny-bopper that loves way deep inside of me loves this so much. Its definitely heavy on the YA category so don't expect anything too heavy. But if you love the movie "13 going on 30" with the added twist of enemies-to-lovers then give this one a chance!

Thank you to NetGalley and Mindy's Book Studio for providing and ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This one immediately caught my eye because of the gorgeous cover. Someone had posted that if you like Jenny Han and 13 Going on 30 you would love this book. THEY WEREN’T WRONG. The book starts as Charlotte is reaching the end of her senior year. She is crazy organized, a super perfectionist who needs every last senior memory to be perfect. The only thing standing in her way is a person, her frenemy, J.T. Renner. Something happens pretty quickly leaving them both wondering if they were crazy or did they really just time travel? Reading them forced to navigate this adventure together was charming. It gives you all the warm feelings of a rom-com. It’s so fun and such an easy YA adult read.

Loved it! This is not my usual genre but I’m so glad I went for it! It’s just the cutest story and a classic twist on those 90s romcoms I have so much nostalgia for! I hope this is made into a Netflix movie, bc I can’t wait to watch Char and Renner on the screen!
