Oh you tricky little book, with your roads and ways shrouded in riddles and rhymes. As we went along, I wasn’t entirely sure what story you were going to tell me. Where will we go? How will this end? When you abandoned us after that glorious cliffhanger, we were left at the mercy of a monster. When we close the book this time, will we end the story instead, by virtue of the mercy of one?

It always amazes me when I can feel the atmosphere of a book. When I am cold and weary, hungry and heartsore, along side the players. Here I fought monsters out of myth, in a land I was never supposed to enter, and I lost a friend. This is, dear heart, a love story, even if its telling is dark. Even when it hurts. There are as many paths to a finale as there are cards in a deck, but only a few of them can reveal a happy ending. I won’t tell you if this is a safe place to leave your heart or not. I will tell you that this kind of tale is my favorite kind- a story about the power of stories. A world shaped by and for the story of The Shepherd King, ruled by the Providence cards, and the story will demand its due. It will be told again, and it won’t be denied.

Well done little book. I am immensely proud of you.

Oh. My. Gosh. That was my reaction when I finished this book. That and stunned silence. Seldom do I love a sequel more than I love a debut, but this book. This book was so. dang. good. It capitalized on all the things that I loved about One Dark Window and did it even better. It was atmospheric, heartbreaking and magical.

I loved the expansion of the world-building in this one as well as the lore of the world. Other characters also got more of a deep dive and were fleshed out more solidly in this installment. My only complaint is I want more but I'm glad this book series ended where it did because it allowed no room for fluff. All in all, this has become one of my favorite fantasy duologies and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves an atmospheric read with plenty of plot, angst and romance.

Thank you Orbit Books for providing me with the ARC for Two Twisted Crowns!

I thoroughly enjoyed One Dark Window and thought the magic system was one of the most unique I’d read about. Where One Dark Window was great for setting the vibe, Two Twisted Crowns told an incredible story.

I loved the sequel even more than the first book. This is a must read!

With Two Twisted Crowns picking up right where One Dark Window left off, readers can be right back in the thick of Rachel Gillig’s entrancing writing. With the gothic atmosphere of wild and twisted woods and a mist creeping in, you feel the timeline trickling through the characters fingers as they try to right centuries of wrongs before their time is up. The unique magic system keeps revealing secrets in every crack of this story. Darling side characters get the space to blossom and stretch their roots and explore a love you didn’t see coming in the first book. The threads of plot were so perfectly crafted and laid in One Dark Window that Two Twisted Crowns to picked up beautifully to run with and tie into a fitting conclusion I adored.

The romances are balanced nicely with the high fantasy elements of this story, providing a satisfying slow burn and the aching The pacing kept my heart racing. And the character arcs were superb.

This duology skyrocket to the top of my favorite reads within the first chapters of One Dark Window, and held tightly to my heart until the last words of Two Twisted Crowns. I haven’t jumped so quickly to love a story since I read Hannah Whitten’s Wilderwood duology.

Rachel Gillig returns with the highly anticipated sequel to "One Dark Window," and in "Two Twisted Crowns," she delivers an electrifying continuation of Elspeth's journey, filled with dark magic, high-stakes quests, and a haunting internal conflict.

In this spellbinding sequel, readers are once again transported to a kingdom gripped by a tyrant king and ensnared by dark magic. The weight of Elspeth's actions in the previous book looms large as she and Ravyn embark on a perilous quest to save their kingdom. Gillig doesn't hold back on the suspense, plunging readers into a world teetering on the edge of destruction, where every moment counts.

The central driving force of the narrative lies in the quest for the final Providence Card, the Twin Alders. This card is not only the key to setting the kingdom free but also the linchpin of the story's escalating tension. The stakes are higher than ever, and the challenges facing our protagonists are more formidable than they could have imagined.

Gillig's skill in world-building continues to shine in "Two Twisted Crowns." The mist-cloaked forest, a perilous and enigmatic setting, takes center stage in this installment. The forest is brought to life with vivid descriptions, and it becomes a character in itself, shrouded in mystery and danger. The Nightmare, the monster that shares Elspeth's head, becomes a captivating and complex character, adding layers of intrigue to the journey.

One of the novel's standout features is the internal conflict that Elspeth faces. Her struggle with the Nightmare, a haunting presence within her, adds depth to her character and raises thought-provoking questions about the nature of good and evil. Gillig's exploration of Elspeth's inner turmoil is both poignant and gripping.

The pacing in "Two Twisted Crowns" is masterful, with each chapter propelling the story forward while maintaining an air of unpredictability. Gillig expertly balances action sequences with moments of introspection, allowing readers to connect with the characters on a deeper level.

Furthermore, Gillig's prose is rich and evocative, pulling readers into the story and immersing them in a world where magic and danger coexist. Her ability to convey emotion and tension through her writing is commendable, making for a truly immersive reading experience.

In conclusion, "Two Twisted Crowns" is a stellar sequel that not only lives up to the expectations set by its predecessor but also surpasses them. Rachel Gillig's masterful storytelling, intricate world-building, and compelling characters make this a must-read for fans of dark fantasy and epic quests. "Two Twisted Crowns" is a gripping tale of redemption, internal conflict, and the enduring power of hope in the face of darkness. Readers will be eagerly awaiting the next installment in this captivating series.

✨arc review✨

Honestly I loved the first book so much and this was even BETTER. I cried, I laughed and I loved. What an incredible story. I already want more 😫 in my top 3 reads of the year hands down. Can’t recommend enough.

My most anticipated read of the year was wholly satisfying. I’m just sad it’s over. I simply devoured every single word and the conclusion to this duology couldn't have been any more perfect.

Getting a more in-depth look at the world, magic system, and the characters, especially The Nightmares past was my favorite thing about this book. The providence cards and how they became to be are explained in far greater detail. I still find the magic system to be one of the most unique in comparison to other fantasy books I have read. Rachel Gillig again created a lovely gothic atmosphere, as well as writing that had you latching on to every moment in vivid detail.

I thoroughly enjoyed having new POVs and didn't find myself bored within any of them. Ravyn's POV was something that I was hoping for and it delivered on all points. The banter between the characters and The Nightmare, GOLD. Also, the romance between Elm & Ione had me swooning. After this novel, Elm has cemented his position as my favorite character. [The Nightmare comes in at a close second. I LOVE a redeemable villain! (hide spoiler)]

Forever one of my favorite fantasy duologies and I cannot wait to read Rachel Gillig's future novels.

Thank you to Netgalley and Orbit for an eARC.

I will stand on the rooftops of NYC and scream until I have no voice left for people to read this duology. Rachel Gallig has introduced me to dark fantasy in a way I will never forget. What an insane magic system Galig has created. I am a firm believe the second book is never as good as the first but Two Twisted Crowns captured me. These characters are so easy to fall in love with. Book 2 picks up right where One Dark Window left off. Only now we add another POV and I am HERE for his. Without spoiling anything the added romance between two side characters was EVERYTHING to me. I always find myself pushing away from the story when I have a MC who isn’t as prominent as the first book because you fall in love with them. But even lacking Elspeth’s POV the pacing of this book makes it so easy to keep reading. It’s so dark, and atmospheric. I truly can not thank NetGalley and Orbit books enough for allowing me the opportunity to read this ARC. I hold this duology extremely close to my heart. Rachel Gallig you have introduced me into Dark Fantasy and I hope one day I can find another duology that makes me feel how this one did.

“The two were together, so the two were the same: The girl, the King, and the monster they became.”

One of the easiest 5 stars to rate a book. Two Twisted Crowns was the ending that this duology needed. I was sucked in from the first page and am still thinking about it days after finishing. Multi POV, dark and immersive atmosphere, with a unique magic system all lend to an amazing story.

The character arcs in this story were so good, especially Elm and Ione. I was finding myself wanting to get to their storyline quicker, all while being fully immersed in Elspeth, the Nightmare, and Ravyn’s storylines as well. The expansion of the Nightmare/ Shepherd King was captivating to read, and learning about his past while being interwoven with the present kept me on my toes. I absolutely loved how this ended. All my questions were answered. And yes, some tears were shed.

This duology has quickly become a favorite of mine. If you love romantasy, dark atmosphere, a sprinkling of spice, and an amazing plot, I highly recommend The Shepherd King duology.

Rachel Gillig wove a beautiful ending, one that I will continue to think about.

"Two Twisted Crowns" by Rachel Gillig is the perfect gothic tale for a dreary fall day. This dark sequel to "One Dark Window" seamlessly picks up where it left off, immersing you in a world where nightmares aren't always what they seem, and true monsters may wear familiar faces.

Gillig's unique magical system weaves a rich, poetic story that'll leave you captivated. The atmosphere feels like a character in its own right, adding depth and intrigue. The pacing is spot-on, ensuring there's never a dull moment.

Told through multiple captivating perspectives, each one shines, making it impossible to pick a favorite. You won't find yourself wanting to skip a single page.

The ending is a masterstroke, giving each character the fate they deserved, some happier than others. The last line, "I was more than the girl, the King, and the monster of Blunder's dark, twisted tale. I was its author," leaves you with a hauntingly powerful impression. This enchanting, atmospheric fantasy is a must-read for those who crave tales of magic, mystery, and dark beauty.

Elm and Ione steal the show. I liked them well enough in the first book, but here I was hanging on every word as they fought for themselves and the kingdom, employing cunning, heart, good and bad decisions, and of course some spooky Providence Cards. Oh yeah, Ravyn is also off gallivanting with our bright-eyed friend while Elspeth wrestles inner demons. They do NOT have a good time.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I am so sad this story is over but these characters will forever live in my heart rent free. Elspeth, Ravyn, Elm, Jes, Ione, the Nightmare.. ugh my heart ❤️ When I first read One Dark Window, I was immediately captivated by the dark and twisted Nightmare and the Providence Cards. It was such a unique take on a magic system and how the cards played into the power throughout the kingdom of Blunder. And the eerie mist and the infection.. it was all so intriguing.

Two Twisted Crowns picked right up where we were left in ODW. We get multiple POVs and have quite some new developments. We finally learn more about The Shepherd King and the forest spirit, how he bartered his way to get the Providence Cards. Each family in the kingdom has a history that spans the 500 years since The Shepherd King’s rule and it all comes together in this book.

While some of the story was a little predictable, the characters make it all worth while. Their relationships and growth are all written so perfectly. The eerie setting of Blunder and the path to find the entire deck of cards is the perfect spooky season read, too.

Two Twisted Crowns releases October 17, 2023.. if you haven’t read One Dark Window, I recommend picking it up soon and reading both books back to back to avoid cliff hangers.

Be wary. Be clever. Be good. 💀

I’m speechless. This was hauntingly perfect. Honestly I don’t even know what to say because the first book I liked but it didn’t blow my mind away like the second book just did.

First of all, the plot. It was already really good because of how unique it was but in the second book you kind of follow 2 plots and both of them were so thrilling and surprising, full of twists and revelation, it made the reading so easy and the book impossible to put down. Also it wasn’t super annoying whenever a pov was changing because both plots were exciting.

Then the characters. I loved them all (most) in the first book but here ??? The development was so amazing and you grow even more attached to them. Elm is definitely my favourite as well as Ione. Their arc was so amazing.

The ending was absolutely perfect and so heartwarming but the rollercoaster to get there was painful!! I shed so much tears.

I recommend this duology 100% this was pure magic.

Tropes:
• allies to lovers
• amazing banter
• tension
• found family

THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT.

“Be wary. Be clever. Be good.”

Duologies are a delicate balance. And Rachel Gillig knocked it out of the park. Y’ALL. This is it. This is how to finish a duology. I flew through this. It’s a shorter fantasy that even when you’re not trying to speed, the need to know what happens next will keep those pages flying.

There’s multiple points of view that lend all sides of this dark tale. And the new romance absolutely SENT ME. I am deceased. I am kicking my feet in the air, wide eyed giddy at the romance in this book. The romance isn’t the forefront of the plot, and that’s totally fine because the plot is SO GOOD. I love this magic system and the world building. The Nightmare cracks me up, and one the best morally gray crafted souls I have read about. I loved every single characters arc. Everyone landed right where I hoped and right where they deserved.

That’s kind of all I want to say because I don’t want to spoil anything. There’s everything you could hope for in this sequel. The build was insanely good and I can easily put this as one of my favorite reads in 2023.

Overall audience notes:

Fantasy + Romance
Language: low-moderate
Romance: vague open door
Violence: high
Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of life, physical/weapons/magical violence

I found this sequel so satisfying, every thing tied up in ways I could never have predicted and just overwhelming perfectly. It’s rare that I enjoy a sequel as much as the first but this one *chef kiss*

This does change narrative styles from the perspective of just Elspeth in book 1 to chapter specific narration in book 2 which did throw me off for a beat but told a better and more complete story. I really enjoyed Elms character arc and getting to see the reasons he is who he is and how they impacts his view on Elspeth.

If you enjoyed book one, you have to read book two. If you haven’t read book one, what are you waiting for?

Fantastic wrap-up to this unique Romantasy duology!

One Dark Window started us off with a mystical dark fantasy world where magic is literally in the cards...Elspeth, after touching the Nightmare card gets infected with the Nightmare himself, who haunts her waking thoughts. Joining forces with the Captain of the Destriers, she makes alliances with those who would do anything to unite the deck and end this curse once and for all.

This duology was a whirlwind of a story. Dark magic, a tragic curse, and our favorite- romance. The second book focuses more on Elm and Ione which was surprising since book one focused on Elspeth and Ravyn. Don't get me wrong, Elm is my favorite character! The romance was SO good.

I very much enjoyed the concept of this book. The cards were a unique twist though I found myself at times struggling to keep up with which was which. Overall the storyline was fun and intriguing and I loved the journey. The trees throughout the book were fun details. Love the focus on that aspect.

My only and biggest issue was the romance rap up with Elspeth and Ravyn. It felt so flat to me and I was disappointed that that wasn't expanded on. I mean...they were apart the entire book!!! I NEED a fantastic reunion here and I didn't get it. 😭 I don't know if it was because the focus on Elm and Ione or not...but that ending missed the mark.

All in all, this duology was solid read. Swoony romance, protective vibes, and a great fall fantasy duology.

This duology was EVERYTHING! From start to finish, I was captivated. One Dark Window drew me in and Two Twisted Crowns will have this story a lifelong favorite. The magic system is so unique and may be my favorite of anything I have read. The author did a wonderful job building this world, illustrating the magic and developing the characters. The reader gets to experience the story from Elm's and Ravyn's POV which I loved. The pacing is perfect, the atmosphere haunting. The perfect ending! From romance to politics, this story has it all I will forever recommend these books. Rachel Gillig, I will read whatever you write!

This book was a perfect wrap-up to The Shepherd Duology. The magic system in this duology is super unique, I love the dark gothic fantasy setting, and the plot is so well written and captivating. I love the direction book 2 went and how the plot played out. The introduction of Ravyn’s and Elm’s POVs gave the story more complexity and allowed us to see deeper inside the two important characters, their backstories and struggles as well as their relationships with other people, especially between Elm and Ione. We also get more insight into the Nightmares backstory and his relationship with Elspeth which I loved seeing.

My only complaint is that I wish there was more of an emotional impact at the end of the story. It felt like there was too big of a time skip between the end of climax and the epilogue without all of the feels you get from emotional reunions and reconciliations and I desperately wished for that.

Other than that, this was a great book and I will definitely be rereading the series at least once a year.

Talk about strong FMC!! And finally a MMC that doesn’t overshadow her! I laughed, I sobbed (uncontrollably), I found myself lost in Blunder alongside Ravyn and Elspeth. I loved the Trees, the Nightmare and the play on tarot. All around amazing book from Rachel Gillig!

Hello reader!

Okay, let's get to this review, because Two Twisted Crowns is still consuming my thoughts and I'm completely okay with that.

In this second installment, we start off where we left off after One Dark Window. We follow a few main characters, Ravyn, Elsbeth/Nightmare, and Elm. I LOVE having all of these POV's especially Elm! I was so excited that Gillig gave Elm so much page time, and continued to develop his character and expand on his story. After everything that happened in book one, I wanted to wrap him in a warm hug and needed for him to have his happily ever after.

Romance readers will eat up Gillig's romance fantasy, while wondering, at every turn of the page, will Ravyn and Elsbeth/Nightmare be able to save the kingdom of Blunder?

As the story unfurls, like wood-smoke in the kindling of a new fire, the story is filled with yearning, dread, and uncertainty. Readers will be anxious to know if everyone will survive, as they undergo the journey into the wood to find the final Providence Card: the Twin Alders.

With unseen twists and turns, Gillig will have readers on the edge of their seat as the pages turn, until you're at the very end, wondering what will Gillig write next.

Definitely pre-order this one!

Happy Reading ~ Cece
