The story is about Allen Harris who gets selected to be the President of a prestigious university. But for confirmation, they needed to check on Allen's past to ensure that he was fit for the job. Allen, who had three extra marital affairs was distressed to know that his truth would come out. So he decide to meet each of those three women, only to realize that one of them disappeared in a mysterious manner.

This plot was really good and so I selected this book. The only trouble I had while reading was the delays in the story along with sexual descriptions. Other than that, this book is definitely an enjoyable read with mystery.

I started this book a couple of times, but couldn't get into the story. Sorry. It is perhaps my age, or my gender, but this sort of subtle justification for sexual pressure on young workers should not be tolerated, even on the pages of a novel.

A well plotted and gripping mystery that kept me on the edge. Even if it's a reprint it aged well and it's still entertaining.

Allen Henderson hopes to be the next president of the prominent university he works for the only problem is he committed acts similar to the newly ousted president. Throughout the book we hear about the reasons why or lack of reasons why he cheated on his wife even though he loved her and the children he also tends to love to describe women in the greatest terms which I did not feel comfortable with that all but I’m sure others will not have issue with it I did find the stock except for the description of females to be highly engrossing and utterly interesting it may be just maybe I slightly felt sorry for Alan it’s amazing how much you’re willing to forgive when you know someone away we get to know him in the book this was a great book and one more time for the road with the exception of the way he describes females I totally recommend this book. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

Beneath the Ivory Tower by Warren Adler is an interesting story of a man and his peccadilloes, told in the first person, mostly by the man himself. Francis Gordon Sandborn was about about to be released from his contract as the president of an extremely prestigious university. He had been an amazing president and public figure, often making public appearances, both on television and in person, on behalf of the university. Sadly, he had a committed an act, probably many of them, so egregious that, although it was costing $11 million plus the remainder of his contract, it had brought his time as university president to an end. Allen Harris was the legal counsel for the board and so he was to deliver the news to Sandborn. In his heart of hearts, he hoped to be appointed the next president, but right now he had other things to deal with. He had had affairs, not with girls who were students, but affairs, none the less. He had to be sure that he had been as careful as he thought he had been and no word of them would leak out.

Allen Harris was a good man, as was Sandborn, except for this one thing. He loved his wife, his children, and his life. He didn’t really know why he had strayed but he had and he had loved each of these woman at the time. Plus, he had lusted over them. There was no paper trail. He only used payphones. He registered in hotels under other names. He had to be sure so he decided to visit each of them to be certain she would not be his downfall. It was an odd journey down memory lane. One he enjoyed in a very perverse way. Their reasons for breaking up had been varied. His wife had never known, never suspected. He never forgot why he was taking this journey now. It was an amazing physiological thriller that cut him to the very core when he got to the end of his journey. An interesting book with a fabulous character. It was carefully written so as to uncover information gradually. I never saw it coming, but this is not really my genre. It was a lesson in how little control one has over one’s own life. I would say Adler was successful in what he tried to do in this book.

This was a very good thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat biting my nails. I couldn't put it down til I knew how it ended.

It delves into the life of Allen Harris, a pillar of the community, a married lawyer who is asked to be president of a conservative university. But first he has to be vetted by the board of Directors. They think he is squeaky clean but it wasn’t really the case...Allen had engaged in a series of extramarital affairs...Will he pull off the deception and keep the sexcapades a secret... you will shake your head in disbelieve.

Mr. Adler has a way with words and his narration proves how he can evoke in us unexpected empathy for his character despise the behavior of infidelity. He paints this despicable man with shades of gray and sends him on a journey from current day reflection to intense and convoluted thoughts flashing back to past relationships. How deeply did he affect the women with whom he had affairs? Did time distort his old fear of exposure? Imagine flagrante delicto in living colour...Mr. Adler gives us a movie picture of the male libido with a partner poised and ready....definitely not a book for everyone.

I have mix feeling about this one, although nicely written and at times grabbed my attention I felt 3 affairs and what came about was too much to read...I contemplated dropping it many times. Definitely not my cup of tea, the story dabbles too much on sexual activities for my taste. One thing for sure you will know what goes through a man’s mind while cheating on his wife....Thank goodness not all men are like Allen....

I received this book as an ARC and this is my review. Wow! This story is loaded with flawed characters and twists and turns. The book is a study in human behavior and what happens when people try to do the right thing and still run off the rails. I totally recommend this book to readers who enjoy psychological thrillers

Toipc and storyline is interesting to pick up but it is really slow,and didn't hold interest after some pages. I just finished in anticipation of some type of mystery or thrill but, sadly there are none. Sorry.

When I started reading this book I did not realize that it was a reprint of a 2010 book .The book is about a college lawyer who wants to be college president but has a past that would not recommend him for the job!This book did not hold my interest and I do not think it should be classified as a thriller.Thank you Net Galley for allowing me this copy.

“Beneath the Ivory Tower” is a reprint of a previously published book (“The Womanizer,” 2010) by Warren Adler. The book opens with a sexual scandal regarding a student and a college president. After a lot of people have been introduced, the student’s lawyer presenting the case to the college’s board of directors, and the college lawyer talking to the college president, the college president is given a golden parachute to leave his position. Then the college lawyer is offered the presidential job, but first has to go through an extensive vetting process. The college lawyer hints throughout the opening pages that he, too, has a checkered past … and he spends most of the book trying to find the women he had affairs with in order to ensure they will not blab about the affairs.

I have to be honest - this book was not an enjoyable read. The language ranged from pretentious to insulting to women to generally bizarre dialogue. The main character, the college lawyer, either annoyed or bored me. I found the investigator a little interesting, but even he wasn’t enough to hold my interest. Flashbacks were used for the affairs, which would have been okay, except that the lawyer keeps repeating that he’s a good husband, but he can’t help himself. The big reveal chapter wasn’t really a surprise if one is paying attention. To be honest, I started skimming this book pretty early on and, basically, didn’t stop. I don’t know why this book is being re-released and, since the author died in 2019, he cannot be asked.

The novel begins with a scandal involving a university president and an attempt by the Board of Trustees to find a replacement after he is persuaded to resign. What follows is a rather dull and uninteresting dissection of a marriage with the usual flaws — as told in flashbacks. While a portion of the ending was a surprise, what surprised me the most was that this book was categorized as a mystery/thriller. There was no mystery involved, nor was it thrilling! The book was originally published in 2010 under another title and I have no idea why it was resurrected.
Although I did not enjoy reading this book and never would have had it not been in the mystery category, I thank NetGalley for the opportunity.
