I received a free copy of, The Woman on the Bridge, by Sheila O'Flanagan, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This is a heavy book so many sensitive topics, the fighting between the Irish and the English, domestic violence, tuberculosis womens rights, Hitler, and more. It was a good read Winnie her sisters, her husband, Joseph and his family are all strong characters. I did not agree with everything they did but it was a good read but a hard read.

Enjoyed it. The book wasn't the type of historical fiction that I usually read. I loved the author's previous books and decided I needed to read this, plus the cover. Book covers get me every time. Pretty much I started reading the book not really knowing what it was going to be about. I knew nothing about Ireland's fight for independence. Friends that fought together to get rid of the British end up being enemies once the Treaty was signed. Women had no rights. Husbands could beat their wives simply because they married to them. Katy was lucky to have such a supportive family. Loved Winnie and her parents. I'm not sure how she lived with her in-laws for so long without killing Joseph's mom and sisters. Her father-in-law was sweet, but the rest of the family was extremely overbearing. Winnie was constantly accused of being a traitor and Joseph's sister's made her aware that she wasn't good enough for their brother. The worst was when Rosanna renamed Winnie's daughter. I wonder what ever happened to Marianne.

Definitely recommend the book, it's different than the author's previous books. I enjoyed the characters, story and writing style. Look forward to reading more books by the author. Loved the cover of the book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Hachette Book Group through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
