Celia refused to let her burgeoning relationship with Detective Nick put her off. Being a firm believer and an advocate for “justice for all,” she wasn’t about to let the higher echelons distract her from getting to the truth. They had a challenging task before them, and avoiding all the twists and turns was a priority.

Book 6 in the Old San Francisco series sees Nick and Celia and company involved in the murder of a maid in a wealthy household. As always with these books, the mystery is well done and engaging, with a series of plausible suspects and several plot twists. Historical details are woven in seamlessly. Readers who have followed Nick and Celia’s long running relationship woes and were hoping for a bit of a smoother run for them may be a bit disappointed. There are few private moments between them and little actual affection. The ending suggests that additional obstacles will be put in their way as well. I enjoyed the book but worry that element of the story will continue to get drawn out.

Another truly excellent Old San Francisco Mystery, with so many twists and turns that I had to double back to make sure I was following correctly! I love catching up with Celia and Nicholas (and their whole gaggle of found family), and I can’t wait to find out what happens next - especially with that mini-cliffhanger!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.
