Bears…

Multigenerational Bears…

Theo’s intense backstory…

The secret twin relationship between Theo and her brother Pax…

Crazy connections and surprises…

Deadly mysteries and a few unbelievable moments…

Two love stories full of intense and crazy family dynamics…

Resonance Surge is all these things, but it's also a story of love. Love of family, love of siblings, love of pack and love for the sake of love. Under all the subterfuge, mystery and danger beats a tempered thread of love so fragile, so broken and so pure it’s beautiful in its imperfection. So many threads connecting so many characters as Ms. Singh weaves their lives together in this new world of Trinity.

I love when Nalini Singh releases a new Psy/Changeling book because we get to peel back another layer or two of this mysterious, exciting and dangerous world! Resonance Surge is all this and more!

I highly recommend the book and every single one in the series!

This seventh book in the Psy-Changeling Trinity series stars Yakov Stepyrev and Theodora Marshall. He a changeling bear; she's a Psy. He had a wonderfully secure and loving childhood; she was repeatedly tortured by her grandfather.

Yakov has had recurring dreams about a woman in danger for years. When he meets Theo he immediately recognizes her as the girl and also recognizes that she is his mate. Theo is in Russian to look at a Center started by her grandfather to do medical experiments. When she gets there, she gets flashbacks that let her know she was once an experimental subject there.

Theo is severely damaged by the treatments her grandfather demanded in order to make her into his tool. She has a low-level telekinetic power that he has maximized to make her an assassin. She thinks that she chose to do those things and is almost crippled with guilt. She was also left with a rage that overcomes her and makes her a danger to herself and others.

With a serial killer hunting slender, blue-eyed, blonde-haired victims, Yakov is determined to keep Theo safe and help her on her mission while convincing her that they have a future together. This made for an emotionally intense story.

While the larger problem of the disintegrating psy-net was upfront for the hero and heroine, it was in the background and seemingly no closer to resolution in this episode.

I enjoyed this one and loved the relationship between Yakov and Theo. I have a major crush on the Russian bears.

3.5 STARS

Theodora Marshall has always lived in the shadow of her brilliantly talented brother, Pax, who is currently dealing with the devastating effects of the Scarab Syndrome. Theo is a low ranked Psy whose main function had always been as an anchor for her twin, Pax, as well as a puppet to her evil grandfather. Until three years prior when her horrific Psy Council grandfather, Marshall Hyde, met the wrong end of a bomb, Theo had always lived a brutally conscripted life of literal torture and forced service. Now that Pax, who actually has a conscience unlike the rest runs the family, Theo is tasked with going to Moscow to find out what is going on with a seemingly abandoned rehabilitation Psy Center. The terrible place where less than perfect Psy had their brains essentially erased leaving them to be barely functioning and needing constant care.

The Stonewater Bears are one of the two dominate changeling species in Moscow; they have been requested by Pax to provide help and security for Theo while she investigates the Center as it seems the dark and sinister place may not be abandoned after all. Yakov Stepyrev may be all Bear for the most part but he inherited a modicum of foresight from an F Psy great-grandfather. For years he has seen Theodora in his dreams come to a brutal end. Once they meet in person, he believes that Theo is his fated mate so Yakov will do anything to protect her and change that future’s outcome. Yakov is also a twin and so he understands the close connection Theo has with Pax although she is keeping a secret about exactly how that connection works with her brother.

This story also focuses on Yakov’s twin, Pavel, and his relationship with Arwen Mercant. Fair warning for those who are not fans of M/M couples because this book contains some steamy scenes for the first time in this series for same sex characters. Since this book has two main story lines, neither one gets quite as fully developed. Another theme in this book is more of the backstory of the when and why the Psy race adopted Silence as well as how life realities continue to change now that Silence has fallen.

Nalini Singh is one of my favorite writers, so I may be a bit biased, but I would have to say I enjoyed Resonance Surge better than the last couple books in this series. The main couple have amazing chemistry, and we delve more into the darker parts of this worlds history. I would recommend this series to anyone who loves a good paranormal romance/urban fantasy series.

Nalini Singh has created a magical world in her Psy-Changeling series that now continues in the Psy-Changeling Trinity. Twenty-two books in and I am still as enthralled as ever.

In Resonance Surge we meet Theodora Marshall, a tortured Psy who was deemed as defective as a child for being unable to keep her Silence, and Yakov Stepyrev, a StoneWater bear who has been literally dreaming of Theo for years.

Yakov knows Theo is his mate and he wants to protect her and prove to her that she is not a monster she believes herself to be, but Theo has spent years believing she’s a threat to anyone who gets too close. Together they have to unravel questions left unanswered after the death of Theo’s psychopathic grandfather and navigate not just their feelings but also a threat to Theo’s life.

Nalini Singh once again served all the romance in Resonance Surge and I loved Theo and Yakov’s story. Arwen and Pasha’s side story was an added bonus since I’ve been invested in them since The Last Guard. I am already anticipating the next chapter in the Psy-Changeling Trinity.

Singh's latest foray into her Psy-Changeling world left this reader feeling rather blase. Similar to the last few installments, we are getting secondary and never heard of character stories while major character stories wait in the wings. Heavy on the romance but light on the plot. Not to say the premise wasn't interesting but I really felt it could have been explored more in depth. Some light cameos with a strong secondary romance that in my opinion was richer and more full bodies than the primary one. The ending is dramatic with an epilogue that spikes the curiosity and definitely ensures you will have to read the next one.

Bears! loveable bears with their rough and tumble love of mischief, what's not to love about a story featuring bears especially when you're seeing double. It's Theo and Yakov's story but the long simmering romance between Pavel and Arwen finally comes to a boil. There's enough intrigue, suspense and darkness to keep you on the edge of your seat as the story unfolds.
The Marshall family is everything evil and it's a good thing that Councilor Marshall Hyde was blown away when he was. While Pax is the gifted one and the perfect successor to the family heritage, his twin Theo just doesn't cut it in the eyes of her family. She would be long dead if her being kept alive was not necessary for her twin's survival, but she did live through hell and more that she did not even realize. Now some of the machinations of her grandfather have come to light and Theo is dispatched to Russia to work with the bears in locating these rehabilitation centers and providing restitution to the residents. Theo will of course find much more than she expected from this trip to Russia including truths about herself.
Yakov has a small gift of foresight. At a very young age he was able to see his mate in a vision, but the one truth seems to be inescapable; every night he sees her die as he looks on helpless.  When he picks up Theo at the airport, he knows immediately that she is his mate, and he determines to do all that he can to change the future. After all what's the point of having foresight if you can't change events.
As the two embark on a roller coaster ride of murder and mayhem and follow clues regarding the once inhabitants of the center, secrets begin to emerge but not even the patterns that they are seeing prepare them for the eventual truths.
No book about bears would be incomplete without some mayhem bear style and family hijinks.  Ms. Singh's story telling is superb as always. I am awed by the power of her imagination and love how she builds background in this story by introducing letters between Yakov and Pavel great grandfather and his sister at the cusp of silence telling us how families were split apart based on the choices that they made.
Will families have to make new choices as the Psy-net continues to fracture?

Nalini Singh is an auto-buy for a reason. Depth of character, deep world building worth the ability to make you feel part of the Psy-Changelings and always want to come back for more. Theo and Yakov are an alluring, perfect couple. I can’t wait for the next book in the series to see where Nalini goes in this post-Silence world.

This did everything that I was hoping for in the Psy-Changeling Trinity, Nalini Singh does a great job in continuing this journey. I was engaged with the characters and they felt like they belonged in this series. It left me wanting more in this universe as the writing was so well done.

Twin. Bears. I don't think she can ever beat this one. Series over. Good night. *drops mike*

The main story features Theodora Marshall, granddaughter of Marshall Hyde, former evil overlord and member of the Psy Counsel who someone had the sweet pleasure of blowing into tiny bits three years ago. Theo is the twin sister of Pax Marshall, now head of the family and who suffers from Scarab Syndrome, and who was actually the villain in prior stories. The Scarab Syndrome is eroding his mental stability and it encourages him to try to destabilize the already failing psy-net. I mention this because I was conflicted about his part in the story. Whenever we discuss Pax and Theo, there is a strong, protective bond between them and we could see the love and devotion of these two to each other. But I have a hard time overlooking what Pax was doing in the prior stories. Okay, yes it is a mental disorder but his direct actions lead to people dying and he is still not stable.  Our main character is devoted to him but he is dangerous.

The Marshalls are a family of vipers but Pax is trying to steer his family into the light (except for that whole mental devolution part) and this is not something anyone else in the family is interested in. Pax has asked the only person in his family that he can trust, Theo, to go to one of their grandfather's "rehabilitation centers" in Russia to find out why the defunct center is still drawing money from the family accounts. To show that the Marshalls are done sweeping their family's evil deeds under the rug, they enlist the StoneWater bears to accompany Theo and help in the investigation. A task that Valentin assigns to Yakov.

Twins Yakov and Pavel have some psy in their DNA as their great-grandfather was a foreseer. Yakov first dreamed of his mate when he was a teenager and only recently have those visions returned, only this time his love is coated in blood and in those visions Yakov can't do anything to save her. Of course, it is no surprise to him to meet his dream mate at the airport when he picks up Theo. At first, he can't grasp that the cold woman in front of him is actually the same bright-eyed woman from his dreams but as they work together they quickly build a trust and a strong attraction.

Theo knows as a lowly 2.7 gradient TK, her grandfather would have happily had her "disappear" from the family lineage but her bond with Pax has always been freakishly strong and any harm he cause Theo was also felt by Pax. Knowing Theo's death could also kill the heir he has been molding, Marshall Hyde had to come up with other ways of making sure Theo knew his displeasure with her. Theo has only ever known the love and support of her twin. She blossoms under the care and attention of Yakov and his bear family. Theo was never truly Silent and it doesn't take much for her to grasp for at least a few moments of joy with the attractive bear.

When Yakov and Theo arrive at the compound and Theo breaks down in a panic attack at the sight of the front gate, they know there is more to the mystery than what might still be going on at this remote center. They also need to figure out if her grandfather would have actually sent Theo there and what experiments might he have done to her that she can't remember.

THOUGHTS:
Resonance Surge features the love story of both bear twins, Yakov and Pavel Stepyrev. I don't know about you but I have loved watching the courtship of Pavel and Arwen Mercant over the last six books. Pavel would overtly flirt with Arwen, as only a bear could, and the unflappable psy would make up excuses why he was too busy to go out with Pavel, while not-so-secretly enjoying their game. Arwen, being an E psy and the heart of the Mercant family, wears his very vulnerable heart on his sleeve and initially thought Pavel was just looking for a good time.  Pavel, a laid-back bear who's idea of dressing up is a new T-shirt, is the polar opposite to Arwen's reserved, and fashionably dress psy, yet they make the perfect couple.    Pavel and Arwen are so adorable now that they are an actual couple, and while the story is only 20 percent Pavel/Arwen and 80 percent Yakov/Theo, I thought those Pavel and Arwen moments stole the spotlight.

Not only did this story take us back to the StoneWater bears, but it focused on the sexy and fun twins.  I think Nalini brought their story out too soon because I don't think she is going to be able to top this one.

There are no bad books in this series, but I admit to having a special weakness for the bears. I love the way Singh is slowly unfolding the intense world arc that puts everyone in danger, while also delivering emotionally satisfying HEAs for each couple.

Resonance Surge is another glimpse into the enchanting, rough and tumble, frolicking lives of bears. This book focuses on Yakov as he tries to court - and save the life of - Psy Theodora Marshall. With Yakov's brother, Pavel, close to mating with a Mercant, the tight pair of twin bears find their life paths are diverging. This leaves Yakov free to focus on a reoccurring and haunting vision of a blonde woman who bleeds to death while he is powerless to save her. When he meets Theo, he recognizes the woman from his visions and he is determined to save her. Theo is busy helping her brother Pax, who is unstable but holding on, clean up the family holdings after decades of machinations by their grandfather. A one-time member of the Psy council, the evil man separated Theo and her twin at the age of seven. Thrown aside as useless due to her power level, Theo hung on to life by virtue of a tie to her twin which left their family unable to execute her. Now, she is picking up the pieces of her disjointed past and learning family secrets don't always stay buried. As Theo attempts to discern truth from lies and memories from nightmares, her loyal bear tried to inject some fun into her life, while simultaneously trying to change the future. This book offers glimpses into the bear twins family ancestry, as well as depicting the results of the depravity an emotionless and power-mad man can inflict. I highly recommend this nuanced read by Nalini Singh. If for nothing else, read it because of the bears. Delightful.

Introduction
Resonance is the 7th installment in the Trinity series but is the 22nd installment in the Psy Changeling world. There is something about this series that is so much more than you could ever expect and honestly I think its some of Singh's best writing. And there were some delightful suprises in this book that I honestly didn't expect to see from this author. There are two romance plot lines, although Yakov's storyline is much more stronger than Pavel. Considering this is the first time I have seen this author introduce a gay couple on page, I am not shocked by it. I am curious to see if we will start to see these type of themes in future books from her, she definitely has me intrigued. The romance that builds between these couples are unique and different from each other but so poignant. Its packed with plenty of laughs, the endearing qualities of pack dynamics among the bear clans and family close ties to tug at your heartstrings. Definitely an installment to gush over.

Summary
Stone Water Bear twins, Pavel and Yakov Stepyrev, have always been attached at the hip but now when they meet their potential mates, both Pavel and Yakov find themselves going into different directions. Pavel funs into Arwen Mercan, who is a Psy Empath and they begin starting a relationship and developing their mated bond. ARwen is shy and reserved and has never been used to the type of attention that he receives from Pavel but he can't resist what he feels and the love that just bursts from Pavel. Then we have Yakov who is the primary storyline of "Resonance Surge" Theodora is also a twin with Pax, but growing up they were seperated because she was viewed by her family as weak and much less than. She was forced to go through certain measures and now she is determined to atone for those mistakes she made but as she and Yakov discover the secrets of the past they also discover a tight endearing bond that only strengthens the more that they are together. But there is a foul plan happening and neither of them or those they consider family will see what is ahead, will they be able to rise above it and be able to embrace a brighter future ....together?

My Outlook
So Resonance Surge is a story that utterly captured my heart and so quickly too. We are first brought into the heroine's world and man my heart just poured for this young woman who has been alone for so long and is just now reconnecting with her twin. As we see what she suffered, your heart will bleed for her especially in how badly her family turned on her. And then bring in the BEARS!!! Now I have to say I have read many bear shifter romances, but Nalini Singh so easily captures their lifestyle in such authentic ways. I love their bright energy and eagerness for life and all the pranks that they play just cracks me up. But they have so much love for each other and I am in love with seeing how this author brought her readers back to the bear changeling packs and seeing so much more depth to the clan and the Russian culture. The romance was slow building but also introduces the reader to captivating emotion and relationship growth that I found to be so relatable. The way that our couple ends up being so vulnerable with each other and connect in these small and big ways was monumental for the story. I enjoyed the little touches that Nalini Singh delivers with her books and we definitely see such the intimacy being so well developed and my heart just went out so quickly to these two. If you are a fan of the way that Singh writes these pairing, I guarantee that you won't be disappointed with how this story is developed while alos building a plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat and in suspense from beginning to end.

Overall View
Overall I found Resonance Surge to be a poignant romance that feeds the heart with such slow building tension, a plot that has a breath of mystery and inspires the reader to delve deeper, and delivers a group of stories to fee the romantic heart and packs a punch straight to the heart!

I absolutely loved reading this book! This series is so great, and I loved this latest couple (and that we got his brother's happy ending at the same time was really great!) and I couldn't get enough! All 4 of these characters were so great!

One thing that I loved about this book in particular, was the letters between his great-grandfather and his family. He left the Psy network to be with his bear mate, and the voting for Silence was a particular issue with his sister in particular, with her husband and child. It was so heartbreaking to read, especially given what we know about Silence after all these books.

We mainly have the story of Yakov, a bear shifter with a bit of Psy blood, which is why he's seeing these nightmares of Theo. And we have Theo, who was tortured by her grandfather, and has a heartbreaking story. We also had Pavel and Arwen, who have been a couple for a few books now, but they hadn't mated yet, so I loved getting their story as well!

The rehabilitation center plot, yeah, it's horrid what the Psy did to the members of society that they deemed broken in some way. That Theo didn't have a clue that she was connected to them until she went there? The pages couldn't turn fast enough!

We don't have a lot of updates in the overarching plot with the Scarabs and such yet, but we do have Pax, who is Patient Zero, and now that we've gotten some of his history because it's also Theo's history, I'm really hoping for a happy ending there!

This was a really fantastic read, and I can't wait for the next in the series!

I could not put this book down! This was another great addition to this series and I love any of the stories that feature the bears.

I finished this book and was so angry at myself. Getting this as an ARC means I’m going to have to wait *forever* to talk about it with my friends.

I think this book has done more than any other book in the series at shifting and advancing the main plot of the series - I absolutely went feral at the end.

I do think the romance was not super interesting - I think the memory loss thing has shown up too much in the series. But I’m not really in it for the romance at this point!

I DO wish Singh would stop teasing us with the Harmony Pair build up.

I can't stop reading this series even though it lost its appeal.

I'm still very much a fan of the author's old work, the beginning of the Changeling series and the beginning of Guild Hunter. Sometimes a series, as with a TV show, should stop on a high.

I love bear shifters - one of my favorite paranormal books is about one [book:Bear Meets Girl|12180288] - but sadly Singh's bears leave me cold, which is such a bummer because they are fascinating creatures.

Resonance Surge felt low on action, which isn't a bad thing. It also featured two couples, the main couple and a mm romance (twin brother's love interest) - which also isn't a bad thing.

I just wasn't in tune with either relationship. And I didn't get drawn into the story as much as I hoped I would. And in the end I'm not sure how much I'll retain from the entire story.

There are just too many characters of multiple families/packs. It's becoming too hard to keep them all apart. And none of the characters from the new Trinity series had a real impact on me so far. Which is NOT the case with the original Snow Dancer and Dark River packs. I still remember many characters fondly and even re-read certain books.

As I said, on one hand I can't stop reading her books, on the other hand sadly they lost their luster. I'm hoping for something new and exciting to come my way.

Nalini Singh brings out the best in people. I love that she's slowly but surely weaving the threads laid years past to see where we are. And it was wonderful to see the bears again! I'm intrigued to see where this series goes.

Another great continuation of the series. It was interesting and I especially enjoyed reading so much of Arwen.

A great combination of paranormal romantic suspense with lots of humor that really draws you into the psy-changling world and characters who come to life in the story. I loved the humor mixed with a real sense of family and community and acceptance of people and nature all get packed into the action and story and keeps building and expanding as you read. While it is a great continuation of a series that really leaves you hanging for the next book it could easily be read alone. Beware if it is your first book in the series you will likely be purchasing the previous books to read as well! .
