"Palette Knife Painting" is an art instruction book on how to paint with palette knifes to create 3D, Deep Impasto paintings. The author used oil paints, but you can also use certain acrylic paints. The author started out with the basics like materials and supplies and the basic techniques used when painting with palette knifes. She had 8 step-by-step projects (wave, ocean shore, several flowers, trees, windowsill) that practiced these techniques. While the directions and pictures were good enough for me to feel confident in trying them, I also felt like it'd be easier to understand how to use a palette knife for painting if I could see it on video. Happily, she does have some short videos on YouTube that show these techniques. Overall, I'd recommend this book to artist interested in learning palette knife painting, especially in using really thick paint to create a 3D painting.

Another delightful Quarto addition to their wonderful art books. I specially picked this up because of my interest in Vincent van Gogh's impasto technique and the complexity of the technique despite looking very easy to paint. Elley brings a range of paintings and instructions to paint them in increasing order of their complexity. I tried one myself and really enjoyed it.

This book on deep impasto painting is a little bit of new technique for me. I enjoy painting with a palette knife and oil paints, I mainly use it to give bit of texture and definition to a painting. This method explained as Deep Impasto is more saturated and gives a very 3D and molding effecting. The finish painting are very dramatic and with the thick layers of paint look very impressive. The book explains the method, what tools and paints to use. There are an amazing amount of variety of palette knives that can be sourced.
There are many step by step projects to try, which are easy to follow and give great results. All in all a very interesting concept and different look. Thanks you NetGalley and the publishers for the DRC

Palette Knife Painting; Deep Impasto is the inspiration you need to start your next masterpiece.

Lisa takes us on a stunning journey through painting techniques from blending through to texture. All of which, was fairly new to me. Honestly, Lisa had me sold at "Clean up is easy, just wipe and you're done!' - As a busy parent always cleaning up my children's art, I don't often have the energy to even think about starting mine- let alone clean up. This book might have changed that.

The coastal landscape might have been my favourite although it's hard to choose!
As I was reading this book I had a memory pop up of waiting in the entrance of our school hall and seeing a painting just like the ones featured in the book. I had to touch it.
The images in Lisa's book are so detailed and clear it feels the same way.

I was gifted a digital copy of Palette Knife Painting: Deep Impasto in exchange for a fair and honest review. Thanks Quarto Publishing and NetGalley!

This book is a wonderful guide to those who desire to paint using pallet knives. There is a lot of information on the different pallet knives, paints and other supplies needed.
I like that the book had the different projects pictured with the page numbers in the contents page.
Like project are very beautiful. There is a logical order in the book. Starting at the easier project leading up to those for which more skill is needed.

This is a nice book to check out if you’re interested in this particular type of palette knife painting. My husband and I like watching Portrait Artist of the Year and Landscape Artist of the Year, and sometimes those artists use palette knives for part of their paintings. I was interested in that style of use but this book is about using only palette knives (no brushes at all) and huge amounts of paint to make raised relief “paintings.” She compares it to icing a cake and the projects tend to look that way. I didn’t honestly care for the majority of the projects and thought they looked kind of amateur, to be honest, and not to my taste. There were a couple of exceptions that I did really like, particularly the flowers. Of course art is completely subjective and it may be perfect for others. Also, the amount of oil paint needed for these projects is likely to be expensive unless you work on a very small scale. I’d also be concerned about health risks of using the paints and cleaners, though that is true of many materials.

All in all, it’s a fun and interesting book for exploring this medium. You might want to preview the book to see if it’s a good fit for you.

Rounded up from 3 1/2 stars.

I read a temporary digital copy of this book via NetGalley.

Palette Knife Painting: Deep Impasto, Paint beautiful masterpieces using a palette knife and the impasto technique is a unique and interesting instruction book for artists. The skills developed will be useful in a variety of other painting areas and it is a creative and bold technique to learn. Th instructions are easy to follow and the projects are bold and vibrant. I loved the textured effect but the amount of paint used might be a bit costly. I would probably have a go at a small piece. Overall a great book.

This book is for bold painters who do not care about the cost of paint. Actually it is not painting but bas-relief created with paint (oils or acrylics). The projects are simple, very well explained and illustrated, some inspired by famous artists work like Hokusai and Van Gogh, the colors gorgeous. However I did not like some of them as too rustic or naif. Good layout as always from Walter-Foster.

I have watched a lot of videos featuring knife palette paintings. However, this is the first time I am reading a book on it and I am thoroughly impressed.

The cover, the content and the images are all set to teach the basics of the artstyle which I find quite well done.

For beginners to the pros, I feel this book has so much more to offer.

It gives a comprehensive guide on how to start, the essential materials required and some basic art styles to start with.

So well done with the presentation, this book impressed me so much.

Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group/Walter Foster Publishing, for the advance reading copy.
