I’ve read both MOONCAKES and TIDESONG, and love the story and illustrations so much. When I saw that Wendy Xu had a new graphic novel coming out this year, I could not wait to get my hands on it.

This book has the same expressive, detailed illustrations that I’ve come to love in Xu’s other books. I love the way she draws characters’ expressions and how she places them on the page. Both these elements really call attention to the relationships between the characters. I found it easy to feel the friendships and romance building as I turned the pages of the story.

I don’t really know anything about the field of AI, and I felt like I could enjoy the book just fine without being familiar with the field. But there were moments when I felt like I might have had a deeper or more resonant experience reading the book if I knew more. It made me want to check out the podcasts the author mentions in her book dedication.

All in all, I devoured this gorgeous graphic novel in one sitting. It’s a beautiful, tender story that deserves to sit on the shelf with Xu’s other works.

Note: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This has a very promising start and is gorgeously illustrated. I was less interested in the romantic subplot which somewhat becomes the main plot of the piece, but continued to read to see how the story resolved. While I am not the intended audience, I can see this book circulating well in the library.

We love a sappy sci-fi Romance!!!! I think this dealt with AI consciousness and the ethics of it all really well, while stringing a complex sci-fi world and a visceral romance. I really can't think of anything to put in the review -- no notes whatsoever. I felt engaged the entire time and loved every panel!

DNF. I really liked the premise but the writing did not work for me at all. It wouldn't be fair to the book if I finished reading and gave it a low rating.

The Infinity Particle by Wendy Xu is a graphic novel currently scheduled for release on August 29 2023. Clementine Chang moves from Earth to Mars for a new start and is lucky enough to land her dream job with Dr. Marcella Lin, an Artificial Intelligence pioneer. On her first day of work, Clem meets Dr. Lin’s assistant, a humanoid AI named Kye. Clem is no stranger to robots—she built herself a cute moth-shaped companion named SENA. Still, there’s something about Kye that feels almost too human. When Clem and Kye begin to collaborate, their chemistry sets off sparks. The only downside? Dr. Lin is enraged by Kye’s growing independence and won’t allow him more freedom. Plus, their relationship throws into question everything Clem thought she knew about AI. After all, if Kye is sentient enough to have feelings, shouldn’t he be able to control his own actions? Where is the line between AI and human? As her past and Kye’s future weigh down on her, Clem becomes determined to help him break free—even if it means risking everything she came to Mars for.

The Infinity Particle is a graphic novel that explores the very nature of humanity and relationships in a enjoyable and engaging story. The world and character building is very well handled, and I felt like I had a handle on the necessary information right away. Clem is running from a less than healthy childhood, and has empathy and tech skills that make her a wonderful choice for a job working with AI. However, that empathy and consideration is the trigger that starts a journey for her and Kye to better understand everything. I really enjoyed the story, and as expected from the author, the artwork is wonderful and adds a great deal to the story as a whole. I loved everything about this book and think that readers of all ages can find something here that they can relate to. The exploration of relationships is on point and the take on them is something everyone can get something from, regardless of who they are. I highly recommend this book and look forward to adding a physical copy to my collection when it is released.

The Infinity Particle is wonderful graphic novel that a wide range of readers will be able to enjoy and connect with.

Oh my goodness, this story touched me at my core. The message is spectacular. The concept is hopeful and believable. I adored Clem and Kye and SENA and every single illustration and word.

So Clem is hired to work for one of her favorite scientists, Dr. Lin. She meets Kye, Dr. Lin’s AI personal helper. He looks almost human and has a desire to be…more. The more Clem gets to know Kye, the more unique she realizes he is. They develop a wonderful friendship that turns into a sweet romance.

The core of Kye’s creation is heartbreaking. Clem’s past is also a nice twist. I just loved how these two came together so flawlessly. I need this one on my shelf!

POV: 1st, Dual
SPICE: 🌶️
ANGST: Mild; some side character drama but almost fluff

Clementine just wants to make a name for herself on a new planet, and it's a bonus that she landed her dream job while doing it! What she wasn't expecting was for everything to go wrong after meeting the leading doctor of AI development and her AI assistance, Kye.

I LOVE Wendy Xu's artistic style (Check out "Tidesong" if you haven't read her before!), and her stories are some of the most original I've read. And this story didn't disappoint! As AI is becoming more common in our world, I loved seeing a glimpse of what it could become.

The world building was so detailed and beautiful, even though there was only a few lines about it. The character designs were so beautiful and cute. I wish there had been more detail/closure about Clementines past, but you understand generally what she went through on Earth.

The concept of a romance between a human and AI was intriguing, and I felt the author really put a lot of thought into how they wanted it to come across.

It was a really lovely story with a theme of AI that I think we might be seeing more of in the future.

I LOVED THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL SO MUCH! And I should have expected nothing less from one of the co-creators of Mooncakes.

Super adorable. Ok, adorable coming from the perspective of a middle aged adult. From a teen’s perspective probably it’ll seem dramatic. But I see now the author is one of the co-writers of Mooncakes so I really should have expected it to be cute and top notch!

Wendy Xu is absolutely an auto-read author for me. Her art style is so charming but she always manages to hit on hard themes. As a scientist who deals with AI, it's a relevant topic right now as we discuss states of consciousness and associated rights. Clem was adorable in every way as she started her job on Mars with the illustrious Dr. Lin. Also Sena is the cutest little AI bunny-moth EVER. The color palette really brought a levity to the topics, contrasting the darkness with pastels. It's a super quick read with sci-fi notes and I just loved it.

The Infinity Particle is set in a sci-fi world where AI are the norm, and tells the story of a girl named Clem who is excited to start her dream job with the renowned Artificial Intelligence scientist, Dr. Marcella Lin. While there, Clem quickly starts to feel a connection with Dr. Lin's AI assistant, Kye and the story progresses from there. This was an interesting book and I loved the artwork and the soft color palette. There is a lot of exploration of familial abusive relationships and I found that fascinating, especially as they examine it from a few different angles. Unfortunately the romance between Clem and Kye felt rushed and fell a bit flat for me. A solid read for anyone who enjoys AI stories.

This was a cute story, I enjoyed the science and robotics aspect as well as exploring a world where AI “lives” among us. There is a lot to unpack in this story.

This book grew on me and sucked me in. I wasn't sure if I would like it, but seeing the "human" side of AI was just too intriguing to think about. Especially because it makes us think about other humans in a little more complicated light.

The characters were wonderful and grew more and more complicated (even the AI characters) with each page. I loved thinking about how our backgrounds get funneled into the things we choose to make. I'm excited to share this with my students!

This was cute! I love the art style, character designs, and Mars. The story was nice and interesting, though at times the transitions between scenes or conversations felt a bit disjointed. Overall, this story moved fast and I wasn't really feeling the romance subplot (it felt very sudden). My favorite part was learning more about Clem - she's a strong character who has been through a lot, and I liked that she stands up for herself and Kye.

When a young inventor falls for a lifelike AI, she also begins to confront questions of freedom and autonomy as she realizes that her dream job is not all that it was meant to be. Clementine Cheng has moved from Earth to Mars to find a new start with her dream job under Dr. Marcella Lin, an Artificial Intelligence pioneer. On her first day at works she meets Kye, Dr. Lin's humanoid AI assistant. Clem knows robots, she's built her own companion named SENA... yet something about Kye feels too human. The more time Kye and Clem spend together the more sparks begin to fly for them, yet it also becomes clear that Dr. Lin is getting angrier and angrier with Kye's growing independence. Clem just wants to help Kye but that means facing off against Dr. Lin and trying to look into the mystery about what she really knows about AI and if Kye is sentient enough to have feelings shouldn't he be allowed to be in control of his own actions? This was such a beautiful and and heartwarming read. I loved the artwork and the overall tone of the story was really interesting and I just had an absolute blast! I would definitely recommend this book!

Wendy Xu is one of my favorite graphic novel creators and “The Infinity Particle” did not disappoint. Not only is the artwork stunning, but it also conveys the emotions of the characters so much better than words would. The colors chosen give this graphic novel a cozy feel and the story itself is heartwarming.

No surprise here (because it’s Wendy Xu) but I loved this one. The story felt completely unique and the art is spectacular. Also, Clementine is my favorite femme name so I loved the MC right away, and now I want my own personal assistant??

Very cute and sweet sci-fi romance between a young scientist and a handsome AI. They grew to care for each other and fought to each have freedom. I just wish Kye and Clem had had more time together; the romance felt a bit rushed.

A beautiful story about what it means to love and be human.

All Clem has ever wanted is to go to Mars and study under the scientist and AI pioneer Dr. Lin, but when she starts her internship at Dr. Lin's lab, she's introduced to Kye. Kye is a revolutionary in the bot world - a human looking robot with the most advanced AI ever made. When Clem and Kye begin to grow closer, the question of what makes us human arises.

I am in love with Kye and Clem. This was one of my top graphic novels I've read in a very long time! The little narrative decisions that Xu made for each character were top notch and made me relate to them and want them to succeed even more than usual. The entire world that Xu created for this novel felt wonderfully familiar, but also had so many little nuances that I adored. The little bots that each character had that reflected their personalities made me so happy to read about and see in relation to each character. Wendy Xu's art is truly unparalleled!

I'll be recommending this to everyone I can. I could easily see this becoming a Studio Ghibli movie with the direction the story takes and the heart-warming aspects. It just absolutely blew me away!
