I requested this one because it might be an upcoming title I would like to review on my Youtube Channel. However, after reading the first several chapters I have determined that this book does not suit my tastes. So I decided to DNF this one.

I really enjoyed this story and after two duds in a row from NetGalley I am very happy about this!

Reagan is a former intelligence officer and Cade is a lawyer. When Reagan tracks down Cade's personal cell phone number he is so impressed he hires her to be his investigator. Then a one night stand turns into a secret relationship because as her boss he is NOT allowed to be dating her. That's just the romance portion and there is SO MUCH MORE. One day a woman comes storming into the office demanding to speak to Cade, Reagan informs her that he is out and the woman storms off after shoving an envelope at her. Reagan decides to follow the woman and try to get some answers but just before she reaches the woman she dies. Inside the envelope? Names and a birth certificate. No one can imagine the rabbit hole Reagan and Cade are about to go down and the secrets they are about to uncover.

Nan McNamara is an excellent narrator and Michelle Cruz gave her the perfect story to bring to life.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the opportunity to read and review this story.

Even when you Lie
By: Michelle Cruz
🎧 Narrator: Nan McNamara

Cade McCarrick is a Criminal Defense Attorney and Reagan Reyes is a former military Intelligence officer turned investigator.

Their story of love and possible betrayal makes for a fun story. They work together and are not supposed to be seeing each other romantically. They make an agreement to never lie to each other.

She finds an envelope with mysterious contents from a women who comes up dead. This takes Regan to the seedy world of Dallas and quickly becomes a target. Will Cade and Reagan solve the mystery? Will their relationship take a tole? What secrets can they be keeping?

Since I live in Texas I enjoyed the mention of places I had been including the beautiful Piney Woods. I enjoyed the narrator and the novel.

Thank you Netgalley, Michelle Cruz and Dreamscape Media for this audio which is available as of March 21, 2023.

Thank you Dreamscape media and Netgalley for the audio book. I adored the narration and I liked the story even more. I loved the mix of genres and innparticular thrillers and romances. And Texas is really great to read about. So many differences between the people I was never thinking. Love the layers of this book.

Even When You Lie is an example of a book that has a great idea for a story but just fumbles in the execution.

The plot revolves around a couple working at a law firm trying to solve a mysterious murder and how everything can be linked. This plot was great and it had an exceptional conclusion but getting there was a little bit of a struggle for me.

The main characters Reagan and Cade were just not that interesting to me and I didn’t care about them as a couple. This book seemed to have an identity crisis because it wanted to be both a romance and a mystery book. It leaned too hard in both directions leaving me wanting more from either side.

The plot was great and for that and that alone I would recommend this book. I just wish the book could have figured out what it wanted to be.

Thank you thank you thank you author Michelle Cruz for writing a female MC who is smart, interesting, capable and even in times of danger does not resort to the stereotype of damsel in distress.

Reagan Reyes is a former intelligence officer who now works for a swanky law firm and is in a secret relationship with her employer. Both Reagan and boyfriend Cade are likeable and smart and we get to enjoy a relationship not based on looks and drama. They are adults.

Ultimately this mystery thriller kept me listening and I enjoyed the writing as well as the narration in the audio book. And, I'm not the best guesser, but I did not guess the ending. Well done.

I'll be watching for Michelle Cruz's next book and that's the biggest praise I can give.
