This is a fascinating story, and the amount of information the author was able to get about this elusive force of a woman is praise worthy. I have lot of respect for journalists in countries where the news is so tightly controlled, and outsiders are generally regarded with suspicion.
I listened to the audiobook, so I can't say if my inability to follow was in part to blame on my multitasking. Not reading foreign names always makes it hard for me to keep track of which people did what. Still there is no doubt that Olive was a true force to be reconned with. Though parts felt fragmented the book does it's best to find the truth while supporting the legend of the Opium Queen.
I hope more stories like this can be told in the future. There is so much that we westerners just don't know about.

There’s no doubt that Olive Yang is a fascinating character in history and I certainly learned a lot in this book. However, the writing was tired at times and I found my mind wandering off.

*received for free from netgalley for honest review* Never heard of Olive before or really any of the things talked about in this book so it was a pretty interesting, though short book, would recommend if someone was interested in nonfiction!

I liked this audiobook. It had some interesting information and storylines and the narration was good. Thanks to netgalley for giving me the chance to listen to this book!

Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this audio book.
This was an interesting read. I'm more of a fiction than nonfiction reader but still enjoy nonfiction in small doses so this was perfect. The writing style was engaging enough and the narrator was good.

I really love learning about history through different lenses. This was a quick and informative read.

I was very excited to learn more about Olive Yang. Olive has such a fascinating story and the author’s extensive research is evident. Unfortunately for me, I did not find getting fully absorbed into the story. Perhaps, this is simply because I was looking for a lighter book but, as I am definitely a mood reader. I do love many nonfiction books but this one just didn’t do it for me. I am sure other readers will actually appreciate these factors as the story holds significant value.

The book is a wealth of knowledge, a good story, and thought provoking all at the same time. I truly hadn’t known anything about the Opium Queen, so it didn’t clean up any misconceptions for me but it seems like it will for anyone who has heard rumors or stories about her in the past. The writing is easy to follow and very engaging and the audio is a good pace and fun to listen to.
Thank you NetGalley for the chance to listen to and review this book.

I really enjoyed this, I found it got into things right away, no long intro or anything, so I had to really pay attention from minute one. I found it a very satisfying listen, learning about this legendary life from interviews to big fish stories and everything in between. I especially enjoyed the observations about what was left out of the stories or the invention or exaggeration of stories to cover up traumatic experiences.

Thank you NetGalley for a free copy in exchange for an honest review. This was interesting and left me wanting more. Olive Yang is a warlord from Burma who fought against the Chinese communist regime. She was horribly misunderstood being a lesbian and likely transgender. I hadn't heard of Olive before listening to this but she is someone I want to know so much more about. I would highly recommend this book.
