An eye opening reconsideration of the General.. Personally I have always felt that after his WW I service he was over rated so this book runs along my initial impression. His failure to do more in the Phillipines has been hard to understand. The author does a good job of illustrating how his ego tended to get I his way.

I really enjoyed this book. As a WWII historian, I have never been particularly keen on the fawning some historians do over MacArthur. This books deftly exposes his unbelievable hubris and what it cost American military me in WWII and Korea. My grandfather served in both wars and never had too many nice things to say about MacArthur. I do wish this book would have addressed the issues surrounding MacArthur’s Medal of Honor, but what Ellman accomplishes is excellent even without that. The advanced copy was somewhat difficult to read because all “fi” and “fl” letter combinations were missing. It took some doing to read about the “ghting in the lds,” and understand, but I got there in the end. This is one I will purchase for my home library.

An intriguing look at the life and times of General Douglas MacArthur. The author has taken the position of reviewing his actions in both WW2 as well as Korea to offer the reader a different view of the man many considered America's greatest hero during the second world war. The author has provided a detailed history and review of the various actions and errors committed by MacArthur. The story is a good foil against the books that chose to overlook the errors and provide a one-sided look into his life. A tremendous read.

Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was an excellent book. I'm glad I had the opportunity to read it. I have read other books by and about MacArthur, but few were written as well and as authoritatively as this one. Anyone who likes MacArthur should read this book, for a good look at the General, warts and all.
