This is a nice series to share with children who love the outdoors. I like the explorative mindset, and it models good interaction with the outdoors.

I adore any book that can take my children and I on an adventure. This book was perfect. We received this as an ebook ARC and had to rush out and buy it the minute it was available. This adventure follows Scout Moore and her outdoor adventures and all the amazing things she discovers. In this book we discover the Great Smoky Mountains. This was perfect for us. I was raised in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina and my parents took me on many amazing adventures. A lot of the discoveries I had are featured in this book. Now I share those adventures with my little ones. As Scout Moore explores with her family she sees many of the things and places I grew up loving and am proud to be a part of. Her brother Wesley is determined to find salamanders. THis book was all about connection to me and my children. On the drive they listened to bluegrass style music just as we did, and still do. All of the moments in this story from going into the National Park, the gorgeous scenery, seeing Cades Cove, and camping while chasing the fireflies (we called them lighting bugs) bring back some of the best memories of my life.
Your family is going to love this book. I know my son did. Especially when he sees places and hears about things he knows and has done. You will enjoy seeing many of the favorite things from the Great Smoky Mountains, especially through the eyes of a child. Follow along on their adventure as they search for the sacred harp. Do you think you know what it is? Discover it with your family. Even better, take this book and your family and discover what adventures you can have in the Great Smoky Mountains. Enjoy your adventure.

My children and I absolutely enjoyed this book! My children, aged 3 and 5, started participating in the National Parks Junior Ranger Program. Scout Moore, Junior Ranger, gave my kids the confidence and excitement to explore our parks and to become junior rangers themselves! this book is perfect for any scouts group, homeschool groups, and families who want to explore the national parks together!

Having knowledge of nature, being disciplined, and having a great imagination are important skills in becoming a Junior Ranger. Scout Moore possesses all of these and is determined. This book is entertaining for primary grades up to sixth grade.

This is so cute, and perfect for the summer! We have lots of families coem to the library looking for national park books for their kiddos, but many of them are a bit to dense for their littles. This is a great option for younger readers.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book. I always enjoy hiking the national parks when I get the chance and enjoy reading about the various parks as well. The illustrations were great and the kid named Jolene is a homage to Dolly Parton. I do like that there were several animals in this book that you might see in the park.

** “We promise to help protect the plants and animals of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. … Forever and always.” **

When Scout Moore travels to the Great Smoky Mountains with her brother Wesley and their parents, they have all sorts of adventures: blacksmithing, seeing wildlife like elk and fireflies, camping, making s’mores, and meeting a little girl named Jolene with a butterfly on her nose (a cute nod to Tennessee native Dolly Parton).

But they also learn some valuable lessons while searching for the Great Smoky Mountains’ mysterious “sacred harp” — to find the beauty in nature as well as in one’s self.

The illustrations by Jeffrey Ebbeler are absolutely adorable, filled with lots of color and animation. Author Theresa Howell does a great job of creating a sweet story filled with educational and inspirational messages in “Scout Moore, Junior Ranger: Great Smoky Mountains,” due out July 1. This book, as well as the others in the Scout Moore Series, will become instant family favorites.

Five stars out of five.

This book was okay. It was like a travel log to show kids how to enjoy the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. There is nothing wrong with that, and if one was going to be visiting that location, this would be a great book. The story sends the kids on a quest to find this magic music, that turns out is just everyone singing together. Otherwise, the story is lacking, and a bit boring.

Scout Moore, Junior Ranger was a fun but a little jumpy read. Literally, the text was jumpy. I also felt like the story was a bit all over the place. But that's cool because so are kids. I wish it talked more about National Parks. This book would be great for planned travel to any outdoor destination and to try to get kids interested in the Junior Ranger program.

Thank you to Netgalley and Globe Pequot, Muddy Boots for providing me with a review copy.

The artwork in this one was lovely but the story was a bit madly off in all directions. I found that it jumped from idea to idea with no real flow. Yes, the story was about a trip and how Scout became a ranger but there was nothing that really tied everything together. They went on a road trip and jumped in a pool. Then her brother was interested in salamanders and sad they hadn't seen one, but there it was. I felt like there were pages missing between events. And while a younger reader may be ok with that, I do find that there has to be a flow and this lacked that. Maybe the author could have taken the time to pull a few of the ideas out and then focus on them. I also didn't get a feeling for Scout and who she was. She felt very flat. Again, probably because of the way the story just jumped around.

Unfortunate, because it really had a lot of potential and the artwork by Ebbeler was really fun.

I thought the illustrations were well done, but the book just didn’t scream out to me. The wording throughout wasn't flowing for me; instead of it being a walk in the park, it was difficult for me to stay interested.

I have worked as a naturalist for parks and thought this was a sweet story about a family camping trip and the discoveries that can be made while spending time outside. This is pretty text-heavy for a picture book so I definitely would say it would be better for older readers. This is personal preference, but I would have liked if this featured more of the natural features of the park rather than the interpretative programming to make it a little more specific to the park.

A cute book about Scout, a junior ranger, who goes to the Smokey Mountains with her family. I love all the info for kids about the Smokey Mountains, plus there was a Dolly Parton nod in here! Very cute!
