This book picks up where the last one left off with Gunnie Rose and Eli back in Segundo Mexia after their traumatic adventures in San Diego. Soon Eli's sibling Peter and Rose's half-sibling Felicia visit and discover that Felicia is uber-powerful. Some of the characters have to separate which propels the action but also confuses the reader. There are some things that happen that wouldn't happen if characters had even a one-minute conversation. Even with that frustrating occurence, I couldn't put the book down. Harris always weaves a compelling spell with her narratives and this is no exception. My only question is, can you change the last word of the book?

Lizbeth “Gunnie” Rose is waiting for her half-sister, Felicia, to arrive in Texoma from San Diego along with her brother-in-law, Peter, because they had to leave after events in the previous book where Felicia’s maternal witch relatives were determined to kidnap her. They wanted to use the recently discovered powerful magic of the girl they had abandoned as a young child. Felicia’s deadly magic involves the taking, and sometimes giving back, of life. Mostly untrained until she was accepted to the Grigori school, Felicia is suddenly on a lot of folks’ radar as being highly desirable. Lizbeth only wants the best for her sister; however, she is dealing with some emotionally difficult situations at present that complicate matters.

Lizbeth and her husband, Eli, have had some problematic times recently which are compounded by a sudden assault from an unknown force on their rural town of Secundo Mexia. Eli and Peter take off to track the attacking militia followed by Lizbeth and Felicia who are none too pleased with their menfolk neglecting to let them know in person. After that big adventure, Eli decides he and Peter must return to San Diego causing more strife for his and Lizbeth’s marriage. Eli’s communication skills with his wife are sadly lacking.

While left alone to fend for themselves though, Lizbeth and Felicia are more than capable especially with Felicia’s magic skills. The women are visited by Wizards making a play for Felicia’s hand in matrimony ahead of the Wizard’s Ball where families come to make marriage contracts. Lizbeth has several stresses to deal with including Eli’s departure and their unknown future, unexpected news from her mother, Candle, as well as an issue affecting her physical health besides all the attacks they fend off. Even though Lizbeth is only turning twenty-one, she has seen a lot and lived a hard life by being a gunnie.

In this fifth installment of the Gunnie Rose series, readers know to expect a high body count, rascally wizards causing trouble, and major challenges for Lizbeth, Felicia, and Eli as well as their relationships with each other and the Holy Russian Empire. Lizbeth and Eli have a long way to go for their marriage to be an equal partnership. If there is a sixth book which I very much hope, it will be quite interesting to see how it all plays out at the Wizard’s Ball which is sure to be exciting, intense and a wild magic show.

Lizbeth and Felicia are finally together!! I loved that we get to watch as Lizbeth and Felicia get to know one another and we get to see not POVs. A new villain is introduced (along with a new plot), so some excitement there. I’m anxiously awaiting the next installment in the Gunnie Rose series, already!!

Finally, Lizbeth and Felicia get to spend some one-on-one sister time, as Felicia goes to stay with Lizbeth during her summer break from school. Peter, Eli’s brother, accompanies Felicia back to Texoma and it was fun to see the four of them living and working together.

There was so much happening in the book, and I didn’t know where to start. Felicia’s magic, the Wizard’s where matchmaking occurs, the militia attacking the town; there was a lot going on. I loved the dual POV, alternating between Lizbeth and Felicia. There were some major surprises, a lot going on. This is the fifth book in the series and I think it would be helpful to read the entire series to fully appreciate the story.

Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC of All the Dead Shall Weep. This is my honest review.

In this new installment of the Gunnie Rose series, we find the narrator duties split between Lizbeth Rose and her Felicia. There's a lot of miscommunication and pain caused by cultural differences, a lot of dead folks, most of whom are bad guys but one of whom is a true loss, and much unhappiness all around. While some of this gets resolved in the end, most of the book is prologue to another adventure that apparently begins in its last pages, and which will get us a new book in the series. I didn't love this one the way I did the others in the series. It's not that it's badly written or plotted; it's that it really does feel like spending time waiting for things to get figured out, waiting to get all the ducks in a row for the next book. It's a stepping-stone between narratives, and I'm looking forward to the next one.

For the first time, Felicia and Lizbeth get to spend significant time together and finally get to know each other. The book is told from both points of view, roughly alternating chapters. We meet a new villain and we are set up for a significant new plot devlopment in the future. My main complaint about this book is that it didn't seem to have a well-developed plot of its own--it really felt like a stepping stone from one plot to another. It also was very short. It felt like an episode in a television show. I do enjoy the voices of both Felicia and Lizbeth, but I expect better behavior (and smarter decisions) from Eli.

As a fan of this series, I enjoyed this installment simply because I got to spend time with these characters and in this creatively imagined world. Objectively I know that it is not a great book. But I sure liked it.

I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I was so happy to see both sisters in this book! The pov jump was fun and different, but there were certain things I wished were gone into in more depth. I feel like this was a really fast paced book, even though it’s set in such a small, contained time frame and space. I felt like it really sets up for a new book for each of the ladies, or at least another joint book before focusing on their next steps. However, by Eli’s last comments, there are a TON of possibilities for this series.

Felicia and Peter are off to spend the summer with Lizbeth Rose and Eli in Texoma. But things don't go as planned. A strange militia showed up in town. Eli and Peter set out to track them, but Lizbeth and Felicia ended up rescuing them. When Eli got a strange telegram, he and Peter set off leaving Felicia and Lizbeth to fend for themselves. What with suitors, family problems, and the strange militia lurking about, Felicia and Lizbeth have a hard row to hoe. But they manage to survive the explosive ending, well most of them do. All the Dead Shall Weep provides the link between Lizbeth's story and Felicia's, setting the stage for the next volume which will have the Wizard's Ball in all its glory and horror!

Thanks Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for the chance to read this volume!

I read everything by Charlaine Harris. She is my favorite paranormal author. However, the gunnie series has been disappointed since book one, but I read them because of the author. All the Dead shall weep is a 3 star on its best day. This book and story is a whole lot of sadness. The storyline had to be and the characters did what they did. I don't write spoilers but sadness overload in this novel.

A great fifth entry in the Gunnie Rose series, I loved the sci-fi elements going on and enjoyed the Western feel. Charlaine Harris always does a great job in creating the world and having the characters be the same characters in this universe. I’m glad I got to read this and look forward to more from Charlaine Harris.

As I finished All the Dead Shall Weep by Charlaine Harris, I turned to my husband and told him that I wondered how I would be able to do justice to this fifth book of the Gunnie Rose series. I have more annotations of things I loved than I have in any other book. So here is my attempt at explaining just how good it is and why you really should read the entire series.

First off, don’t read All the Dead Shall Weep as a standalone. Yes, Charlaine Harris is a genius at sprinkling a recap into the first (mostly) few chapters without making is seem like she’s just rehashing the story. You can follow what is going on, but you just won’t have an understanding of why many things happen. Read the first four books first.

All the Dead Shall Weep is the second book where we see Felicia and get a feel for how her life is turning out. Charlaine Harris tells Lizbeth and Felicia’s story from both of their perspectives, but not in constantly alternating chapters. Each chapter is generally labeled with their names when the POV changes.

I don’t rehash how the publisher describes any book, and this time I sort of regret that decision. There is just so much that happens, so many events from previous books that are clarified and there is a setup for at least three more story lines that I cannot wait to see. I had no trouble visualizing every bit of this story because of the world building that has been occurring from the very beginning. But what I will say is that we get to see more about how Felicia’s power works, how the townsfolk of Sweetwater treat Lizbeth’s family, and what is in store for them as time goes by. There is a bunch of action that you will love and some unexpected visitors that were a delight to meet.

Thank you to Gallery Books, Gallery / Saga Press for sending me a copy of the ARC of All the Dead Shall Weep. It is one of my all-time favorite series!

I always enjoy a Charlaine Harris book and this one was no exception. I enjoy the world Harris created, imaging an alternate history of the world. The character are also a lot of fun. Though, I will say, at book number five in the series, that this one fell a bit flat for me. The plot seemed less cohesive and the characters, at times, felt out of character. It still made for a fun story, but definitely not my favorite. Would still be interested in reading a book 6. (Thanks to Saga/Gallery Books and Netgalley for the ARC)

Although the characters didn't always behave the way we expect rational people to behave, there's no denying that this quick paced story was hard to put down. The addition of Felicia brought a fresh perspective to the series. These books always leave me a bit frustrated with oddities, but I keep on reading them anyway.

I loved it! This is one of my favorite authors. You can't assume anything in this backwards world. The people are deceptively simple minded so I'm always floored when things twist and distort unexpectedly. The sisters were fantastic together in this one. Excellent book in a doubly excellent series.

Fifth installment of this series, and it just keeps getting better and better. A good mix of action and down time for thinking about life. Lizbeth and Felicia have quiet time to get to really know each other when she comes to stay the summer school break with her sister. Peter accompanies Felicia to visit Eli and Lizbeth, shortly after arrival Eli gets called back to San Diego and the brothers leave. The sisters experience many new adventures while learning about each other, of course there are those who don't want that to happen and cause many stressed situations where each sister has a moment to shine. All around one of the best in this series, well written page turner. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for a chance to get an early read.

I love this series so much, and this book only strengthened that love. I’m so glad I got an advanced copy of this book I couldn’t wait and had to read it even though it doesn’t come out until September. And I have zero regrets. I liked that this book had both Lizbeth and Felicia and included both of their perspectives. I will have always have a soft spot for Lizbeth but I like Felicia a lot too, and I especially loved to see them together. I will admit Eli frustrated me to no end in this one with his lack of communication, but it worked for the story. Felicia is out of school for the summer and has come to spend it with her half-sister. But there are oddly dressed soldiers in Lizbeth’s town and there is an upcoming ball that has all of the big magic families overly interested in Felicia. The book is great and I pretty much devoured it in one sitting. And now I sadly have more than a year to wait until the next book comes out (or at least I hope so).
