Old to Joy is a delightful picture book about a young girl and her grandmother spending time enjoying the simple things, things from their past and celebrating family time. Joy is at her grandmothers sitting in her creaky chairs on her creaky porch worried that they will break. Grandmother shares that her grandfather made the chairs strong. They shelled peas and she wondered whey they didn't just open a can, washed dishes by hand and she wondered why she didn't have a dishwasher. When they picked flowers to make potpourri, she realized that smelled better than a candle. As they spent more time together, Joy's grandmother shared their past and the simple things that bring joy into their lives. I enjoyed this story and my grandchildren did as well. We talked about things in my house that came from previous generations. They love washing dishes with me and playing in the bubbles. This was a beautiful book about the bond between a grandmother and her grandchild, as well as sharing time and stories about their family. I recommend this as a perfect gift to either a grandmother or one from a grandmother to her granddaughter. The wonderful illustrations were full of life, colour and emotion and added much to the story.

This is the absolute cutest book for young girls.!

Joy spends time with her Grandmama and learns how to do things like they used to in the olden days. It gave her a great appreciation for her grandmother and her favorite things.

Old to Joy is an absolutely beautiful picture book that not only shows the love and bond between a child and her beloved grandmother, but also shows her discovering a world that is separated through generations.

I just loved how it incorporated the different generations, as one can forget sometimes…

Spending time with my grandparents has always been one of my greatest joys!

Oh how I enjoyed this book. This heartwarming little story brought back so many memories of my grandmothers and my grandfathers as well. I absolutely love this one. Joy is young and when she visits Grandma she feels like everything there is old. Slowly Grandma shows Joy different ways that old things, and people, can be so wonderful and amazing. Joy learns to look for what can be amazing old things and to appreciate them as well. I loved sharing this with my 4 year old. It even gave me a chance to talk about grandparents he didn’t get to meet. This is a beautiful story, and the illustrations bring it all together. You can just imagine the conversation in your mind. I can’t wait to continue to share this with my children and with my family. I am grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to enjoy this book.

Spending the afternoon with her grandmother gives Joy a new appreciation for "old" things. This is a wonderful look at a special grandparent/grandchild relationship, with warm and inviting illustrations by the author.

Old to Joy is an absolutely beautiful picture book that not only shows the love and bond between a child and her beloved grandmother but shows her discovering and exploring a world that is separated through generations. This book was quite nostalgic for me as I grew up living with my grandparents and spent a lot of time with them. Our house was quite old fashioned and I could resonate a lot with this book I loved the interactions between the girl and her grandmother so much and it brought a tear to my eye as I miss my grandmother so much. This would make a beautiful book to gift any child with a bond between their grandmother and them.

"Old to Joy" is a beautifully illustrated and wonderful story about a young girl named Joy, who, while visiting her grandmother, is shown the joy that can be found in the old just as much as the new.

Even if Joy doesn’t quite get what’s so special about old stuff in an old house, as the day progresses, she and her Grandmama seem to forge a stronger, deeper connection as the grandmother helps Joy experience how much joy there is in older things and ways of doing things, like washing dishes by hand or trying on vintage hats.

This story reminded me of times spent at my Nana’s house, only I was the opposite of Joy and loved the cool, old things found there.

"Old to Joy" was really heartwarming and I loved the relationship between Joy and her Grandmama.

Thanks again Gnome Road Publishing and NetGalley for the eARC to read in exchange for an honest review!

Old to Joy is a beautifully illustrated, heartwarming story of a girl who resists going to grandmama's house at first. Everything there is old! The new things at her own house are better, she thinks!

But as Joy spends the day with her Grandmama, she starts to realize the value in all the things her Grandmama has and does. The time spent together, their conversations, and the activities they do together help Joy realize that these things are super special! ❤️

Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this advanced review copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest review on the book!

Thank you so much to Gnome Road Publishing and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.

Everything at Joy’s grandmas house is old and as grandma shares everything with her, joy learns to love these old things and the old ways her grandma does everything.

This was such a lovely book, such a sweetness and deep heart to it. I really loved the connection between Joy and her grandma it was so beautiful. Joy being at the inquisitive age is learning and becomes curious at her grandmas house about why everything there is so old.

I loved that whilst doing her grandmas everyday things she starts to learn and understand and appreciate the things her grandmas has and does, it was really so sweet. I also loved the illustrations they were beautiful, simple but in an effective way, it had touches of colour where needed but was all mostly natural colour tones which I actually loved a lot.

This would be a perfect story for a grandparent to read with a grandchild it shows such love and kindness, such a bond between them, I do recommend it. Children are inquisitive and want to learn all about the people that they love and that love them, this story explores that in a beautiful way.

A cute story told from a little girl's point of view of her day with her grandmother. Their day is filled with all sorts of "old-fashioned" things such as washing dishes by hand, shelling peas, and wearing fun hats. This story is about the developing bond between a grandmother and granddaughter and taking the time to slow down.

I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Young Joy goes to visit her Grandmama and observes that she lives in an old house, unlike where Joy lives. As she looks more, the house is on an old street, the furniture is old. Everything is OLD! She is amazed as Grandmama finds joy in the mundane, even in hand washing the dishes. Grandmama shows Joy how to find happiness in the most simplest of things.
This is a beautifully illustrated book with a lovely story. Perfect for school, home, or public library.

When Joy goes to visit her Grandmama, all she can think of is how everything seems old. The furniture is old, the house is old, even the trees are old. And of course, Grandmama is old! However, as Joy and Grandmama spend time together, Joy finds out that "young" or "new" is not necessarily better than old.

The best part of this book is the lovely color illustrations. I enjoyed the ways in which Joy and her Grandmama were depicted. The illustrations reminded me of times when I visited my Grandma's house and it seemed as if I was stepping into an "old world" European setting. This is a book to be read and enjoyed by families together.

I received this book from Early Reviewers in exchange for an honest review.

A reminder that old things are still beautiful! I loved this sweet picture book about a girl and her grandmother, and the fact that the author included pieces of her own grandmother and older people she knew as a child makes it even sweeter.

Narrated through the young eyes of the protagonist, readers are gifted an honest depiction of the boundless curiosity and awe of the child as she experiences a world separated by generations. Filled with humble interactions between the girl and her grandmother, each page of Anita Crawford Clark’s work flawlessly blends both word and artistry. A treasure for the shelves and bedsides of readers old and young, this story is “joyful” from beginning to end.

This is a touching story of a young girl and her great-grandmother. At first, Joy doesn't like all the old things at Grandmama's house. Then she learns to see the joy in them. I especially loved the hats that Joy plays because they brought me back to my own childhood. I loved playing with my grandmother's hats. The author's note at the end explaining that Grandmama was based on three grandmothers in the author's life made it even more special.

Thank you to Gnome Road for this eARC.

I am delighted by this book! It is such an important message for our children (and for us too!) to slow down and appreciate our elders, older things, and older ways of life.

The illustrations are beautiful and the characters radiate joy. Highly recommend!

Absolutely lovely little book about family and nature, and the value of tradition and slowing down to appreciate the beauty in small things.
The illustrations were also gorgeous, and the realistic-but-just-slightly-stylised fits the vibe of the story so perfectly!
