Thank you so much to NetGalley and B&H Publishing Group for my copy of C.S. Lewis The Writer Who Found Joy by Dan DeWitt in exchange for an honest review. It publishes July 11, 2023.
This picture book is beautifully illustrated, well-written, and age appropriate for elementary aged children. It does not make the war scene too scary or stressful for little readers. This would make a great gift for any child!

Very cute pictures, something for kids to look for as they go through the book, and a nice simple way of telling the story for children! Whoever thought this series up was brilliant!!
Thanks to the publisher and to NetGalley for the advance e-copy of this book. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

I loved this book! The lion scavenger hunt was so cute and fun! It was such a cool little story about one of my favorite theologians life. I love that it was short and sweet, but still focused on C.S. Lewis’ message that the ultimate joy is found in Christ!

This book offers a wonderful, concise overview of CS Lewis’ life. Its overall theme points children to the joy found in Jesus Christ. It clearly explains his moment of conversion and Lewis’ resulting desire to share with others the joy he discovered.

DeWitt handles the topic of cancer in a matter of fact way, not delving very much into the emotions of it, besides noting the affect it had on young Lewis.

Narnia fans will be pleased to learn the story behind the wardrobe. I finally learned how Lewis came to go by the nickname Jack.

DeWitt writes a great introduction to CS .Lewis’ life for children. I don’t think this is likely to become a favorite book that is read again and again, but it is a worthwhile story to introduce children to the truth of finding joy in Christ. This will also be a great home library addition for those who enjoyed the Narnia books.

I received an arc copy from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

With straightforward yet witty presentation, Dan DeWitt compels young readers to better appreciate C.S. Lewis and his pursuit for Joy. The allegorical style of the book offers hidden nods to C.S. Lewis's works and the inspiration for his writings. Closing the book well, a Gospel exhortation leaves the reader desiring to pursue the same Joy by pursuing God as Lewis so did.

Thankful to NetGalley and B&H Publishing Group for the opportunity to digitally review this book- Happily anticipating adding a physical copy to our family bookshelf!

🦁 What a charming biography this is about C.S. Lewis!

🦁 This gorgeously illustrated book walks us briefly through Lewis’ entire life but focuses on his transition from atheism to Christianity and how he shared his faith in real life and through his books.

🦁 The book also discusses the friendship between Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien (also a Christian) and how Tolkien shared his faith with Lewis.

🦁 There is a fun challenge at the beginning of the book to find 20 images of lions throughout the story. I love children’s books that are informative and include an interactive element as well.

🦁 This is a great biography for kids – not too long or complicated, yet it provides enough detail to be interesting. If you have a child who loves The Chronicles of Narnia, I think they would enjoy reading about the author who wrote the stories and what his inspiration was. If they are also fans of Tolkien, then it will be an extra treat for them to discover the authors were great friends.

Thank you @netgalley and B&H Publishing Group/B&H Kids for an eARC of this book, which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

This is a great book to introduce young children to solid Christian role models. Lewis wrote wonderful books for children, and this would be a perfect introduction to him and generate interest in reading his books. Wonderful illustrations, an animal narrator, and hidden pictures to find all add to the story, making it one parents and children alike will enjoy. I look forward to more in this series.
*I received a free copy of this e-book from NetGalley and B & H Publishing. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was a short and sweet biography about C.S. Lewis, the man who went from atheism to Christianity, and influenced millions long after his death to follow Jesus.

I thought this was put together very well for a biography for children! It provides enough detail to be informative, but not too much to be overwhelming to kids. I enjoyed how there was a narrator of sorts walking the reader through Lewis' life, even moreso because that narrator was an owl (typically a symbol for wisdom). Additionally, the graphics to go along with the story were beautiful! The book says up front that you will find numerous instances of lions throughout the book, and I thought that fun tidbit was incorporated well.

This is certainly a book I would read to my son as he gets older and begins to be exposed to Lewis' work through myself.

There's a surprising clever element in how it's designed - illustrations with little notes pointing to historic important things ("Albert's toy garden" "the Kilns") which the text doesn't explicitly reference... which means you can read the book aloud, but then engage in a treasure hunt explaining what the notes mean. That alone makes it a smarter-than-average children's book, and the illustrations and narrator had a knowing humor that works rather than falls flat.
