In the second installment of the First Cat in Space series, the Moon Queen finds herself in jeopardy after eating poisoned soup. In the absence of robot Loz-4000, she turns to First Cat to solve the mystery behind her poisoning and to help her find the antidote she needs to prevent her kingdom from falling into the hands of Bernice. Hi-jinks and humor ensue as the two journey to reach the antidote in time, encountering a diverse group of wacky and wonderful characters along the way. Great illustrations and lots of action and laughs will grab readers and keep them engaged from start to finish.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC to read and review.

I didn't LOVE the first First Cat in Space book, so I'm not sure why I expected this one to be any different -- but I did. And you know what? I am not the intended reader of this book. I feel comfortable recommending this to a lot of middle grade readers who like humor, but I am not the one. And that is okay. More of the same from Mac and Shawn, they're just doing their thing.

This is a super-fun sequel to The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza - more moon shenanigans, more chaotic fun! I loved the mystery in this one of who poisoned the Moon Queen, and the storytelling is absolutely top-notch. LOZ-4000 returns as the reluctant hero, but I will not spoil the identity of the villain! I loved this one as much - and maybe even more - than the first book!

Anything Max Barnett is an instant-buy for me, and this one is no exception. Continuing the frightfully ridiculous shenanigans from the first book, this will be a huge hit with young readers. Can’t wait to add this to our shelves!

After successfully saving the moon once, the Queen of the Moon is having a big feast, but her soup doesn't taste quite right. She realizes that it's been poisoned and someone is out to depose her monarchy. She calls upon the only heroes she can trust, and while the First Cat in Space is ready and willing, Loz 4000 had a bad experience and is hiding away in a glumpfoozle orchard. The plot twists as old rivals reappear and unexpected characters pop up in strange places. But if the Queen can't find the cure in time, the moon may just end up in the hands of Bernice!

This book is a whole tangle of silliness, overdramatics, and puns, making it the perfect light read for anyone who doesn't take things too seriously. I loved every page and can't wait for more in this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

‘The First Cat in Space and the Soup of Doom’ by Mac Barnett with illustrations by Shawn Harris is the second volume in the crazy comic series for kids.

When the Moon Queen is poisoned by soup, it’s up to First Cat to help save her. Along the way, and lots of sidebar action like falling pianos, musicals, backstories by secondary characters and a betrayal plot. Will the Moon Queen be saved and can things get even crazier than last time?

This is a funny story, like the first volume. I wasn’t sure how a sequel would be, but it didn’t disappoint. Young readers should love this series.

If you read the first cat in space book, then you know exactly what to expect from the second. How ever these books do work as a standalone. I find it funny that the books are about the first cat in space, but particularly this book the cat didn’t do much. There might have been 10 meows in the entire story. In the story, the queen has been poisoned, and she must go find a cure. And the toenail cutting computer is trying to find a new life. This book is full of sight gags, and fun for the age that is meant for it. Fans of Dogman, Wimpy Kid and other like graphic novels will thoroughly enjoy this.

*reviewed from uncorrected eARC via netgalley*

children's graphic novel for younger readers, middle grade readers, and fans of Dav Pilkey (publisher suggests ages 8-12 but you know 3rd and 4th graders will want to read it as well as 8th graders and up); book 2 in series (you don't have to read them in order, but kids will want to devour the entire series, so they might as well). The Moon Queen and her right-hand cat (i.e., the First Cat in Space) uncover an assassination plot (a la poisoned soup) and must find the antidote before it is too late.

Short chapters filled with endearingly quirky characters, plenty of chuckles, and even some interesting vocabulary. All that you would expect from Mac Barnett and more !

This was my first book by Max Barnett. It was a very entertaining book! The illustrations are amazing as well! There are parts that are laugh out loud. What a fun book for middle grade readers.

My students have been asking when book two is coming, thanks to the preview at the end of book one. ☺️ So needless to say, when I saw this on NetGalley, I had to request an ARC! While it certainly won’t make my most memorable list, it has all the components that my 5th grade son and 6th grade students love: engaging illustrations, hilarious dialogue, and random humor that any preteen will laugh out loud at—including, of course, a toenail robot. Fans of Dogman, The Terrible Two, and similar hilarity will be satisfied with this one, and we will be adding it to our library shelves upon its release!

I received an electronic ARC from HarperCollins Children's Books through NetGalley.
The adventures continue for the friends from book one. The Queen has been poisoned and they have to find an antidote. Barnett's quirky humor style comes through clearly. Readers will appreciate the adventure and the fun along with the amusing characters. Will they find the antidote? Will the poisoner be found? The twists continue throughout the story until the final pages. Do take time to study the artwork to see the details Harris includes. Looking forward to book three.

Maybe it’s just that I’m not the audience intended, but I didn’t enjoy this book at all. I could see kids liking the characters, and I liked the idea. But I wonmt be reading any other of this series.

Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollinsPublishers for my ARC!

The First Cat in Space series is an absolute blast—both first and second books do not disappoint. From crazy goofy characters, daring dastardly plots full of adventure, to fun illustrations—Barnett and Harris are the perfect team!

These books are perfect for reluctant readers, fans of Dog Man, or those who just love to laugh—The First Cat in Space will be a favorite for many, young and old.

In book 2, the Queen is poisoned, thus our hero, First Cat, must take the Queen on a journey to save her life! Along the way we meet new characters and run into old friends. Will our heroes find the cure in time?

While my 9 year old argued that there was not enough ‘Earth scenes’ in this book, we tore through it eager to see how the problem would be solved. After being huge fans of the first book as it was written, we were delighted to have another story with a similar feel and even some mystery to it! Great work Shawn and Mac!

This book was the most anticipated book in our household. If given a choice of the next book added to our home library would be this book.

We all really liked The First Cat in Space and the Soup of Doom. It included the main cast of the 1st book with some new faces too. The characters tell the story in a humorous and engaging way that made us want to read it all in one sitting. Actually, that’s exactly what we did! We couldn’t put it down. The illustrations and words were easy enough to be comprehended by my 6 & 8 year old. If your child is not reading on their own they would still be able to enjoy this book if you read it to them.

I want to thank Harper Collins for the chance to read this book, I was so excited to be approved. You made me the cool parent. We are looking forward to reading the next book in the series together.

Mac Barnett is on of my favorite children's books authors, and I'm so glad to have read another in the The First Cat in Space series. These middle grade graphic novels are engaging, silly, and hilarious.

In this story, the Moon Queen has eaten some poison soup and has to get to the antidote, with one of her trusty sidekicks' help, First Cat. Loz 4000, the toenail computer, has left the castle unexplainedly, so she's down a BFF. Never fear, another character from book one shows up to help. Or does he?

My favorite new character is the Worm who is a bard. A bard worm! Only Mac Barnett can pull this off.

Loved this one, just like the first! The story is funny, the characters are unique, and the illustrations are fun to look at. This should be a popular graphic novel in classrooms, and I cannot wait to add it to mi s in the fall.

This is such an adorable, fun, funny, cute, and exciting graphic novel!
It has some serious Dog Man vibes, but there are cats. Also, doesn’t everyone love cats? Quirky, weird, fun, silly, and their crazy adventures.
I think all pre-schoolers and all middle-graders are going to love this one.
The art is quite unique, I feel like it might be appealing to younger readers who might want to recreate the art in their own style. Bonus points for all text being in caps lock and in an easy-to-read font, making it easier for beginner readers to get through the book on their own.
