This was an overall warm-hearted read but with a lot of emotion and some challenging themes within. After a challenging eighteen months, struggling with both grief and unexpected debt after the death of her long term partner, Ruth returns to her childhood home along with her daughter Maggie. It was great to see how Ruth coped with being back with her parents after so many years away especially as she had been estranged from her father, not to mention reacquainting herself with former school mates who, along with some newer residents to the area, added so much character to the story. There are multiple stories running through this involving many of the characters which are skilfully woven together however Ruth’s own story is the most hardest hitting. This is very much a character read with many ups and downs but with plenty of humour throughout too making it a very thoughtful but ultimately uplifting read.

I absolutely adore Beth Morans writing and novels. So I absolutely knew this was no exception to not acquire this for our location. I am so excited to read and share more about Maggie’s story. I always love those “going home” type books where you sort of realize no matter how far you go what will always be home. I can’t wait to see how and if she repairs her relationship especially with her father and also how she reunites with the friends that she felt abandoned by so long ago. I also love a strong mother daughter theme as well. This has all the elements are a very enjoyable and heartwarming read and I can’t wait to dive in!

This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Thanks to the publisher and the author. This talented, gifted, and favorite author has written a quick, fun read with underlying themes of sadness. Ruth moves home with her daughter, in debt and grieving the loss of her husband. Her father does not seem happy, but her mother is enthusiastic. Friends come around. Rising from the ashes is not easy, it she keeps on. This is a read for a rainy afternoon, in a comfy chair, with a cozy Afghan. Enjoy.
