Murder at a Cape Bookstore by Maddie Day is book #5 in the Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery series. Bicycle shop owner Mac Almeida and the Cozy Capers group have another murder to solve. This time new Chamber of Commerce Director Wagner Lavoie is found dead in the local bookshop after the Westham Spring Festival Parade. Each Cozy Capers member passes on information they think might be important to solving the case. I like how they all work together to help solve the case. These characters are well-developed and very likable. I can't wait to follow along on their next investigation.

Mac is one of my favorite female lead characters. She's strong and a smart businesswoman. She's a terrific aunt, and I love her relationships with her family. Family is always a strong theme in this series, and that's true in this book, too.

Besides general good plotting, interesting tidbits about various things find their way into these books. From livestock guardian dogs to the efforts to bring Wampanoag back as a first language, these bits give nice moments of depth to the characters and world. Mac and her friends are curious and interested people, which makes them more interesting to read about.

This was another enjoyable outing with Mac, and I look forward to the next one.

Books and chocolate (Yum!) tossed with a nutcracker, a reunion filled with gossip and bickering and murder this is a great book.

It's never a good start to an investigation when one of your employees is a suspect in a murder. Who killed Wagner Lavoie, the Chamber of Commerce's new director? That's what Mackenzie "Mac" Almeida and her book group are determined to find out. Her worries and concerns aren't lessened by the erratic behavior of Sandy, an employee at Mac's bike shop, who suddenly has a habit of not showing up or simply leaving unexpectedly.

Of course, there are ample other suspects, some of them from the Lavorie family and others who had aspired to his job or simply had run-ins with him. Let's just say, him almost ordering local business owners to give out free samples connected to their business wasn't going over well with them. Heck, Wagner's own sister, Flora, isn't actually doing anything to sound innocent, either, not to mention she's irritating many by dropping her still lit cigarettes as she goes about making demands. Or, how about the ex-wife? Or one of those seen arguing with him before the bike parade? Mac already has her hands full dealing with her busy bike shop, but feels compelled to investigate. Secrets? Oh, boy, are there secrets. But, I had to chuckle at Mac seeming oblivious to the fact that those she'd questioned or been asking others about knew she was looking into things. Well, her police friends were telling her not to keep pushing. Did she listen? What do you think?

And, oh, you'll get a kick out of Belle, Mac's African parrot. Belle's ability to mimic Tim, her husband, is amazing. No wonder she feels compelled to cage and cover Belle's cage at times. Lots of bicycle talk, too, with an emphasis on safety, I might note. The cast of characters seems diverse, such as the elderly Helene Fadinan, in a wheelchair after having had polio as a child. I'm hoping to find out more of her past as a film-maker, not to mention where the frequent mentions of the Wampanoag tribal connections seemingly shared by many in future books. Thanks #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks - #KensingtonCozies for inviting me to spend some time hanging out with Mac in Cape Cod, even if it did snow. Living in Alaska, I could relate to that twist in the weather.

The cape is having a bike parade to help support the town. When someone is murdered in the bookstore, the members of the book club decide to help investigate. I really liked this book. It reminded me of why I have liked this series so much.

Murder at a Cape Bookstore is the nicely done fifth book in Maddie Day’s Cozy Capers Book Club cozy mystery series. This is a fun series to read – the Cape Cod setting is a good one and it is always nice to visit bicycle shop owner Mackenzie “Mac” Almeida Mac and her friends. In this book Mac and the members of her book club start investigating when someone is found dead under a toppled bookshelf and it is soon clear that this was not an accident but murder. The mystery is well done with plenty of suspects although I wasn’t overly surprised to find out who the killer was. The scene where the killer was revealed was done just the way I like it in cozy mysteries – plenty of suspense without the main character doing something to put herself in danger – very well done!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

I liked this book, I really like Mac and Tim although he’s not in the book much. Corey is cute, I wish there was more of her. I thought the mystery was interesting but the character who is killed isn’t very likable so there didn’t seem that much interest in finding the killer for his sake. There are several other characters who aren’t really likeable so it was kind of hard to get into the investigation much. I loved that the book didn’t end on the capture of the killer but went on to show the family together. #MurderataCapeBookstore #NetGalley

The charm of Mac's world was gone for me in this offering of Maddie Day's A Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery series. It seems to be that Maddie Day is passionate about social issues that I am not looking into exploring in cozy mystery series books. 'Murder at a Cape Bookstore' was perfunctory and preachy. It's pretty much a pass for me.

Murder at a Cape Bookstore is the latest installment in Maddie Day's A Cozy Capers Book Group Mystery series. A festival is happening in the seaside Massachusetts town and Mac is pulled into another homicide investigation. The new Chamber of Commerce Director rubs people the wrong way, and one of them rubbed him out. Was it a local merchant with a grudge or a family member who wanted to get even for past troubles? As Mac puts the puzzle pieces together, several secrets spill and her life is once again in danger. Luckily, she solves the case, and readers enjoy a treat for several hours. Learning more about her bicycle shop in this book was great fun, and the new hire issue was definitely annoying and funny. I am still shocked at people's unreliability, but at least it keeps us all on common ground. Day will delight her readers with this release, and I'm already clamoring for another one.

This installment of the Cozy capers Club finds Mac and her group involved in mystery stemming from events that occurred during the spring parade. Wagner is the new director of Commerce in town and ends up dead. What follows is an investigation about who in his past wants him dead. The ending is not a total surprise but it is satisfying.

Murder at a Cape Bookstore is the 5th in A cozy caper book group mystery series. It takes place in Westham, Cape Cod. Mackenzie (Mac) Almeida is the main character. She owns Mac's Bikes. She is married to Tim Brunelle who owns the bakery called Greta's Grains. The supporting characters add to the story.

Wagner Lavoie is the new director of commerce. He is the head of the Westham Spring Festival. He is not popular with the town people. Mac is planning to sell food in her food truck at the festival. The festival is a great success. The police go to the Book Nook book store and find Wagner dead lying under a fallen bookcase. Victoria Laitiner is the chief of police. Penelope Johnson is her assistant. Detective Sergeant Lincoln Haskin is from the state police. The autopsy later showed that he had been poisoned. They question Noland Gifford who manages the book store. He is the retired police chief.

The book club group have an emergency meeting to discuss the suspects, which there are many, They divide them up to speak to them. This is when the story takes off on an adventure to finding out who killed Wagner and the reason why. I will leave the story to the reader to enjoy to the exciting conclusion.

I enjoyed this story and have read others in the series. It was a very entertaining book.

Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for this ARC.

When the new Chamber of Commerce Director, Wagner Lavoie, is found dead in the Book Nook, pinned under a huge bookshelf, it looks like another case for Mac's book group, the Cozy Capers. Wagner had quite a few enemies. so there are plenty of suspects for the group to investigate. This was a perfect whodunit with lots of red herrings and likeable main characters. Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for the ARC to read and review.

Mackenzie "Mac" Almeida owns a bike shop in town, and her new husband, Tim Brunelle, owns the local bakery. They're just settling into married life, and all is good. At least, it was. The new Chamber of Commerce director, Wagner Lavoie, wants this year's Spring equinox festival to go over well, and he's requesting that all business owners give away "freebies" to locals and tourists. Not all business owners are happy about this, and Mac does see a couple of them arguing with Wagner. But the festival goes on as planned, and everything seems to be going well.

At least until Mac visits her friend Norland, ex-police chief in town, at the bookstore he's watching for the owners. They hear a noise inside, and unfortunately find the body of Wagner under a bookcase that's tipped over. When they find it's a suspicious death, Norland is one of the suspects, and Mac isn't letting it go. She's determined to find out who killed the man and why. What she does discover is that Wagner wasn't well liked by anyone, and the person who killed him just might be someone she knows...

This is the fifth book in the series and I have read all of them. I have to say that the series has improved with each book, and that's a good thing. This time out, Mac wonders if one of the other business owners in town is a killer, and if so, how she can prove it. Or it could be her new employee Sandy, who disappears without notice whenever she wants and seems to have a history with Lavoie. But Sandy's sister Orlean, another of Mac's employees, isn't giving anything out. She'll have to figure this one out on her own, since the rest of her book group isn't garnering much themselves.

When the ending comes it isn't as much of a surprise as it should be, but it is definitely worth reading about. It shows that Mac keeps her wits about her and manages once again to get herself as much out of danger as in it. It's a good book that will keep you reading in one session. Recommended.

I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley but in no way did this influence my honest review.

Mac Almeida is ready for the bike parade to kick off spring in Cape Cod. Planned to kick off the season that brings people to the Cape and businesses, there are a few business owners who are not happy with the new head of the chamber of commerce, as he wants everyone to give away free items to attract business, which comes after their slowest period of the year.

With the bike parade being a success, it’s a shock to the town to find the new business commerce leader is found dead in the bookstore. Was it truly an accident or did one of the many people the man rubbed the wrong way have it in for him? That’s exactly what the book club intends to find out when they start looking into the man and their suspects.

A book from Maddie Day NEVER disappoints. She has a keen talent with words and always brings together a cast of characters that support the protagonist and bring the books to life. Full of red herrings, suspects and characters that feel more like friends, you’ll find it hard to put her books down until you turn the last page.

this was a strong fifth book in the Capers Book Club Mystery series, it had everything that I enjoyed from the first four books. The plot was enjoyable and I was engaged with trying to figure out what was going on. The characters were written strongly and I'm glad I got to read this. It left me wanting to read more in this series and from Maddie Day.

“Mac” Almeida had a high-powered employment history but now owns a bicycle rent/repair shop, lived in a Tiny House, has a father who is a minister, a mother who is an astrologer, has a verbose African Grey parrot, a baker for a recent bridegroom, and is essential to the Cozy Capers Book Group.
Great characters and town, vivid descriptions, interesting suspects, and a fast moving plot. Another winner in a solid series.
