If not for the insta love I would’ve enjoyed a lot more tbf. It was nice paced and the world building was pretty nice and easy to get into. Same as the insta love I also hate love triangles. But the plot was there and it got me rather intrigued and I want to see more of layna

unique, and completely enthralling!

A world full of feathers and wings, of forbidden magic, forbidden love. The princess has healing hands, a magic that could be punished by death. But when she meets a boy who happens to have magic in his veins, she feels certain. That will be her family, her future. But nothing goes according to plan.

The retelling aspect of the story of Tristan and Isolde was very well done and I could see some tropes that were taken from the original story and woven into the narration of this new one.

gahhh the clifffhangerrr!! i need more!!

I received a copy of this audiobook through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

The world building in this book was amazing. At least the little bit of it that we got to see. The story is told from the perspectives of Lyana and Rafe for the most part, although we did get a few glimpses into the perspectives of others, and Lyana especially has led a very sheltered life, so what she knows of the world just isn't much. But I felt like I got enough snippets of things from other characters to piece together the way this world functions.

This story centers around the mating ceremony, and the way life partners are chosen for the royals of the bird-people. I appreciated how both the young men and young women were given the same tests of skill and knowledge, and as close to equal chance to choose their partners based on the results of those tests as is humanly possible. Seeing the women being just as valued for traditionally masculine achievements in our world was nice. But we also got to see that not every royal was looking for the "best fighters" valuing intellect over brute strength. It just seemed really well rounded.

But Lyana and Rafe share a very dangerous secret that informs the decisions she makes during the mating games. As a dove, Lyana is the ultimate prize among the royal females. Every competing male would consider himself lucky to be chosen by her (or her father, as the parents do tend to scheme behind closed doors to make advantageous matches). In the end it is up to the children to follow through with their parents plans, or not. Because sometimes, what our parents think will be best for us, isn't (a fact I'm working very hard to remember when it applies to my own children).

I don't really want to say too much more for fear of spoilers. I definitely look forward to reading the next book in this series, as I can't wait to see how Lyana and Rafe handle the problems that have landed at their feet at the end of this book. Overall I give The Raven and the Dove 4.298 out of 5 stars.

This is a story inspired by the Tristian and Isolde. I thought the aviation spin was unique and different. I was glad that they just were not just angel wings but different bird wings and their family were of different species of birds. Lyana is from the house of Peace (doves) and it starts off with the mating games. Each Prince and Princess compete in the games in hopes to score first place so they can pick their mate of their choosing. The house of whispers (ravens) are known as the cursed house. They are competing in hopes to unite their people and bring hope. Their Prince Lysander however has a handicap that they have hidden. In order to rank high enough to select a mate the Prince's half brother Rathe goes in his place and acts as the Prince. An unfortunate accident leaves Rathe injured and Lyana finds him and helps to heal him. Both of them hiding their secrets of magic that is forbidden and considered a curse. This all leads to Lyana choosing Prince Lysander (Rathe) as her mate and only to find out Rathe is not who she thought he was.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kaitlyn Davis for providing a copy of this audio ARC for review.

I really enjoyed this story. It was very well narrated. The narrator was clear and changed tone well with the moods in the story, did different voices for different characters, and was overall entertaining.

The story itself was well written with complex characters that we get to know over the course of the novel. It is enlightening to hear from the different characters. The character development is delightful, although I find the characters somewhat immature for their level of responsibility (with the exception of Lysander who is the opposite - too mature, even for his level of responsibility). This could be a cultural difference, however, as these young people are expected to marry young and sacrifice for their people from a very young age. I'm interested in reading the rest of the series and finding out how these characters grow with more at stake than their own happiness.

I want to thank NetGalley for giving me an audio arc in exchange of my honest review.

I think I read this book at the right time. After so many 3 stars reading this one was just what I needed it. I loved the main group of characters (well all of them but certain traitorous owl lol, I understand her reasons but she’s not forgiven yet) and how different they are from each other. I really enjoyed the world building and different houses and I really hope they are explored more in the next books. I’m always saying that I’m not a fan of the instalove trope but after reading this one, I don’t mind it at all if it’s well done. Like it felt like instalove but at the same time it did not.
I really enjoyed the plot and the subplot and the whole mystery about certain characters and what the prophecy is about and I honestly cannot wait to read book 2 after the way this one ended.

The audiobook for The Raven and the Dove by Kaitlyn Davis is a decent listen. The story itself is intriguing, and the narrator does a good job with character voices. However, there are moments where the pacing feels a bit off, and some scenes lack the energy I expected. It's a solid three stars – enjoyable but with room for improvement in the delivery.

Thank you for this arc. Due to the holiday season and my spouse being deployed. It was a read that got me out of a slump and mentally kept me going.

Book was decent, but suffered from being far too long for so little plot.

I am a sucker for a Tristan and Isolde story, the James Franco and Sophia Myles movie really did a number on me back in the day. This was a compelling take on that trop with some fantastical elements thrown in. There was a lot of drama, lots of romantic entanglements, lots of betrayal. There were some issues with pacing and I wasn't personally invested in the characters so much as I was curious to see what happened next making this a 3* read for me. I had a really good time with this and immediately binged the rest of the series as there was something inherently compelling about the characters and the cliffhangers! I also enjoyed the audiobook, thank to the publisher and netgalley for providing a copy of the audiobook for review.

I loved this story so much that it derailed me from my other books because I went off to read the entire series. I love creative uses of fantasy, like the different animal-birds in this book, and sweeping epic stories of love and betrayal, which this book has in spades. The world-building is richly described, and the characters feel real. I definitely enjoyed it since I then devoured the entire series.

I really enjoyed this book. I thought that it had an unique concept and the world that it was set in was really interesting. Although it is a bit heavy on politics, the romance felt well written and I was definitely rooting for them. I do wish that the book was focused a bit more on the relationship but overall it was an excellent read.

The cover snagged me and I thought I was in a YA mood...
Yikes. There are certainly some good things, the bad outweigh them in my opinion.
The plot was very intriguing, love the magical peoples arranged marriage thing. Lyana, our heroine is an annoying brat, and that takes a LOT away from this book since we are forced to hear the whining and immature behavior (this is a YA of course). Xander was fine, I always enjoy the stuck with the wrong brother trope. The world building was fun, I suspect it had some inspiration from Asian fantasy which is always pretty. The romance was not at all believable, the insta-love was painful to read, I did not buy that these characters had any chemistry.
Not for me.

I read this book a few years ago as an ebook and absolutely loved it so I was really excited to see the audio version was made. It was done so so well! Since this has multiple POVs I was expected two narrators, but there is just one. However she does a great job with both the feminine and masculine voices. The story is beautiful and the narration was perfect!

3.0. Thank you to Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book to review.

Why do stories always have a dark haired violet eyed man? Doesn’t matter, we deserve it. A cute book to read, but a lot packed into the first book and a lot of things to adapt to all at once. There are “angels?” People with bird wings and normal arms too who make up several kingdoms. The main love interests are from polar opposite islands. There’s also a beneath the mist. And dragons. Randomly there are dragons. And magic.
I think it feels too overeager / trying to overachieve with all the different plots in the book. Did I hate it? No. Would I recommend it to someone? Maybe, if they had similar criteria that it could meet.

DNF. I received an arc from NetGalley. Honestly, after the tournament and games, I somewhat lost interest. Either I knew there were more books to come and I did not want to read them, or I just needed more. It does have a good story, characters, and plot. This was my first book with dragons and high fantasy. This is a very good book and I might revisit it later on, but right now, it is not for me. But those who love high fantasy and world-building, give this a read.

Thank you to NetGalley for this audio ARC.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Did I request this for the cover? Yes, yes I did. I am nothing if not a sucker for a pretty cover.

The world in this story was unique and sounded so beautiful, it really drew me in. I loved the premise of this however I did not like how it ended. As much as I enjoyed Lyana as a main character for her headstrong, act first thick later and at times outrageous personality, she also came across spoiled and whiny at times. I also did not like how she jus essentially used Xander. I didn't like how utterly clueless Xander was the whole time, to the point it became a unbearable. Then there's Rafe, who gave absolutely nothing.

I'm not sure if the idea of the story, the world building and the pretty covers are enough for me to continue the series.

Thanks to the publisher and author for providing me with a free copy of this audiobook via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I tried writing a summary of the book for this review, but honestly, the plot was quite forgettable. Essentially, there’s a world with winged people, and within this world a dove princess saves a raven boy, and they fall in love. Only, their love is forbidden. Oh, and they both have magic – which is also forbidden.

Even though the plot wasn’t very gripping or exciting, it was a fun listening experience! I enjoyed all aspects of this book – the plot, the characters, the world, the writing. . . but I did feel like it was missing something. Like, the world is super interesting and has such an intriguing history, but there’s not much world-building. And the characters (even the side characters) all had really interesting personalities and character arcs, but we don’t really go very deep into them.

Still, this is the first book in a series, so I’m sure that we’ll get to learn more about the world and the characters later on. I wish I had more to say about this one, but I finished it a few days ago and I feel like I’ve already forgotten all the major events and can just remember the overall gist of things! I should also mention that as much as I enjoyed the narrator, I do think I may have enjoyed this more had I read it physically. Overall, I don’t think this is the most unique or memorable YA fantasy, but there are certainly hints of greatness and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.
