I absolutely loved the scientist/psychic mc! She was such a badass and so complicated. The twists and turns just kept coming and I didn't see the resolution coming at all! I cannot wait to recommend this to my Instagram followers!!!!

For the most part, this book failed to hold my attention and didn't live up to all the good reviews I saw about it. It started off pretty strongly and I loved the concept of a character who is both an astrophysicist and a psychic. I feel like there are SO many ways to take this concept and turn it into a really cool novel, but instead I felt like I was reading a mishmash of weird storylines that were all over the place. I also kept thinking it was going to end, but it kept going and going.

Clearly I am in the minority with my thought on this one, so I encourage you to check out some other reviews and potentially give it a read as so many others loved it!

First, just let me say that Karissa Vacker is a great narrator. When McMillan reached out and asked me to read and review this book, I was skeptical because I'm not one for the supernatural or ghost stuff. This story, however, is every parent's nightmare. You take your eye off your child for a few minutes and she disappears? And then, you are blamed and incarcerated for the crime? When the police bring in a supposed 'psychic' to help with the case, you have to assume there will be some resistance. But, what if the 'psichic' is just good at reading people and noticing things? Well, doesn't that get interesting, and yes, it sure does, and it certainly keeps the reader's interest. I really enjoyed this and did not expect how this cold case ended.

I hadn't read anything by Julia Heaberlin before, so didn't quite know what to expect, but the premise was interesting so I dove in. And I'm so glad I did - this was an interesting take on the mystery/thriller genre, starting with the main character, Vivvy Bouchet. She's a unique combination of science and faith - a talented astrophysicist who's received a grant that has brought her back to Texas, where she's also dealing with the death of her mother, who was a psychic. Vivvy has her own psychic abilities, which she tries to keep under wraps. Her past is complicated, and revealed in flashbacks to her childhood and teen years. But when a high school friend who's now a cop asks her for help with a cold case involving a missing girl, she reluctantly agrees to take a look and is drawn in by what she "sees". Smart and atmospheric, I was completely drawn into this one. The narration by Karissa Vacker was excellent, as her narrations always are. I'm definitely looking forward to reading Julia Heaberlin's past and future books.

I was gripped by the premise of a psychic, physicist heroine/female protagonist. Vivvy Boucher is quite the character, and her name reminds me of old detective noir books.

This book’s vibes as a song: Beach House, Space Song (🎶 “What makes this fragile world go 'round? Were you ever lost? Was she ever found?)

What I liked:
I enjoyed learning about Vivvy’s life and her (psychic, tarot card reading) mother who had recently died when we join the story.

The info about space was neat.

I enjoyed the neighbor, a young girl with autism.

The narration by Karissa Vacker was/is (as always) pretty dang great.

I was swept away in plot of Vivvy’s healing, her feelings about her upbringing, how she grappled with her mystical gifts and intuition, the way she balanced them with her incredible scientific career…and honestly I often forgot that this is a mystery/thriller and she’s supposed to be solving the case of a missing girl. Or is it two?

The lambasting/satirical parody of conservative loudmouths was 11/10.

I didn’t so much dig:
The posi spins on and too frequent mentions of Elon and Bezos.

Vivvy’s relationship with Mike and the triangle that it forms was…not my jam.

The romance angle overall, both the aforementioned triangle and the alternative pairing…I just felt like so much was happening with the case/cases, Vivvy’s past and present with her mom, the podcast - the romance(s) and sister strife was overwhelming (imho).

I almost went with 3 stars but the parts I enjoyed I REALLY enjoyed. 💁🏻‍♀️

TWs/CWs: Infidelity, child abuse, infertility, drowning, emotional abuse, grief, death of parent/mother, brain tumor, childhood leukemia, kidnapping, drinking…

The main character Vivvi is a physicist and a psychic and she is the narrator. Her gift is inherited from her mother, who has recently died. In her childhood, she made a prediction that saved a boy's life and her mother made some predictions that stirred up trouble. This is all alluded to but actually very vague. Turns out, she was in love with the boy (Mike) that she saved, but he is now married to her sister (Bridge) and they have a child (Will). In her spare time from being a physicist, she still helps out the police department with her psychic abilities since Mike is now a cop.

There is an unsolved kidnapping/disappearance/murder that has come up again because the mother of the missing child is in jail for her murder, but insists on her innocence. Vivvi's mom may have had some ties to finding out the truth before she died. Vivvi is now picking this up. There is a detective on the case (Sharp) and a crazy podcaster (Bubba Guns) in the mix. Its all convoluted, rambling, with a ton of tangents. Nothing really happens until about 3/4 of the way through the book and its confusing to figure out how all the different people from past and present fit together.

I did not connect with this story or the characters.

Vivvy is a scientist and psychic who found a dead body when she was a child. As an adult, she is brought in on another missing person case and quickly finds herself embroiled in mysteries, conspiracy theories, and complicated relationships.

This audiobook literally had me gasp out loud and yell, “No Way!” It was a twist that I never saw coming that added to the story and wasn’t just a twist for twist sake.

I really enjoyed this thriller. At first I was skeptical about the psychic power element but it was done so that it was very believable. Also I did not predict the ending which I love, as someone who is constantly trying to figure out the twist! Definitely 4.5 star suspense in my book.

Vivvy is a reluctant psychic, who once used who powers to save a young boy. Years later she has devoted her life to science but the boy she saved has become a detective, and still believes in her. He asks her to help him with a difficult case of a missing girl that was kidnapped, with zero leads. Vivvy is at first uninterested, but after touching a blood stain, she receives a vision that the girl, Lizzie, is in fact alive. She's forced to work with a detective named Jessie who really doesn't believe Vivvy.

This was a really good thriller. I don't believe in psychics but that didn't affect my enjoyment.

I was given a copy of this book after it published but I appreciate it anyway!

This book pulled me in from the second I started listening. I really enjoyed the story and following along as Vivvy tried to solve the case.

This was an excellent thriller with a little romance and a love triangle.

The narrator was outstanding. It was only one narrator, however, she was very talented with changing her voice for the male and female characters. This was one book that I enjoyed more as an audio book.

Sipping thoughts: I received this as a widget and would probably have never chosen to read this on my own. I am glad I did because it was a very interesting concept. I really loved the character Vivvy and her sassiness. I can see her becoming a reoccurring character in her own series. This was a quick read and if you like books about physic abilities wrapped up in a mystery thriller, this is the book for you.

This book is really good, surprisingly. I've been through a bunch of audiobooks but this one grabbed from the beginning and didn't let go. I loved Vivvy's character who is the sole narrator. She and her sister grew up with just a mother. Always broke despite mom doing a # of jobs, even a forklift operator. Also their mom had a side business of reading people's palms, even though she had a gift, sometimes morbid. And Vivvy is just like her.

When their mom passes, Vivvy is called into the police station to help with a case by way of her friend Mike, who believes she saved him with a prediction. Also, she's in love with him. He has a lot of faith in her to help with the open and closed cases. She doesn't think she's up for it but she fell in love w Mike. Only one proble there, he married her sister.

Vivvy now has to deal with his partner a hard nosed detective who doesn't believe Vivvy is anything but a sideshow boardwalk hand reader. He's wrong.

Definitely high 4 stars.

I thought this book had an interesting premise, but my favorite thing about it was the really wonderful writing. Sometimes I paused to admire how beautifully something was described or phrased--really a pleasure to read in that sense! I did find that the plot dragged for me in places and seemed a little convoluted, but I seem to be in the minority with that opinion. I listened to the audiobook, and at first I wasn't sure I would enjoy the narrator's performance; for the first few minutes, her voice comes across as if she whispered and then the volume was raised to compensate. However, as I had hoped would be the case, the quality of her voice in the prologue was probably supposed to match the nature of the childhood recollections, and in subsequent chapters the narrator (Karissa Vacker) really shone, showing a masterful range with voices for various characters and adding to my enjoyment of the book. Clearly, I am the outlier in my rating. The story did have its merits. The idea of a character who straddles the line between science and the otherworldly is interesting. Vivvy had a full backstory and was fleshed out beyond a flat caricature. The plot had promise, the story of a girl who goes missing and the search to find her using both intuition and evidence.

Unfortunately, too many things detracted from the novel for me. There is an awkward three-way relationship between herself, her sister and brother-in-law. It was a love triangle that just felt so awkward, particularly when Vivvy finds herself thinking about her sister and Mike having sex, and says their four legs intertwined are choking her like a noose. Just...so strange.

The author used imagery that was just...offputting. For one example, see the spoiler above. Another would be comparing the crescent moon to a toenail clipping. Gross. She also made repeated allusions to certain things. Stars and diamonds, anything that was in a loop with a noose. It became played out.

Another issue I had with the story is that there were so many storylines and threads to untangle that I felt could have been left for a sequel instead of being crammed into this one. It muddied the main plot, and at times, it slowed the story down.

Spoiler: Why the heck would Vivvy sleep with a man that she suspected of possibly being a murderer? The whole book she has suspicions about John Sharpe, and yet, he's so hot she just has to have sex with him. She does this while also knowing he could be a killer. What the hecking heck?

The narration on the audio was excellent, but this author will be a pass for me in the future.

Vivvy Bouchet is an astrophysicist who has spent her life trying to escape her childhood. When she was ten, she predicted an accident that was going to harm her neighbor, and when it happened, she was there to save him, and from then on, her and her family were in the public eye because of their special “talents”
Vivvy developed several OCD tendencies as a child and her mother believed that she would outgrow them so she never got her help. Now, as an adult, Vivvy tries to focus on the stars to avoid her rituals.
The neighbor that Vivvy saved as a child, Mike, is now a cop, and he believes she is a psychic and has asked her to help him with one of the biggest cases in Texas-the disappearance of a little girl. Vivvy has to try and solve the case while under the scrutiny of her boss, Mike & his boss, her late mother’s clients, and a podcaster who has a whole Twitter following of crazed listeners just waiting for her to mess it up.
You definitely have to suspend belief in order ti get through this one as it is a hot mess in a lot of places. And there are plot holes miles wide. But that’s why I like fiction-for the escape. So in that sense, this was a fun escape. But the use of the podcaster’s name so much and his accent was brutal! The narrator needs to tone it down in that one! Lol Other than that she did a good job.

Great characters, great mystery... so-so plot device.

I'm all for the fantastic in storytelling... but I had some difficulties with our psuedo-psychic-spqce-physist. A bit more believability would have gone a LONG way!

That being said, I was sucked in the whole time, and enjoyed the story, as well as the narrator, as I was able to listen to it, quite a bit!

After listening to the audiobook, I found this psychological thriller to be a pleasant yet somewhat slow-paced read. The combination of paranormal elements and mystery made for an enjoyable experience. The protagonist, Vivvy, was a relatable character with her passion for astronomy and inner turmoil about her past and abilities.

The book had a gripping atmosphere and moments of intense suspense. What I particularly appreciated was the interplay between the tangible and intangible, science and the supernatural, especially in light of Vivvy's unusual gifts. The plot's numerous twists and turns kept me engaged throughout and the characters, especially Vivvy, were well-developed and intriguing. The narration was exceptional, with clear and distinct voices that made listening a breeze.

Vivvy is a very special woman. She sees and feels certain psychic phenomenon. She has helped the police out on quite a few occasions but she has now been brought in on one of the most famous Texas mysteries, the cold case of a kidnapped child. She must team up with a doubter of her abilities, Jesse Sharp.

I loved Vivvy! And she makes quite a few mistakes, especially with the podcaster, and this does not help her case. But, she truly wants to find this little girl. She knows deep in her soul that this case is not what everyone thinks. It takes all her powers and intelligence to discover exactly what happened. And you can bet, it is not at all what you think!

I truly cannot wait to see these characters come alive on tv. I have specific visions for each and every one (which will most likely be my downfall!). I also want this to be made into a book series. I can see Vivvy helping the FBI and creating a world of solved cases surrounding her.

Oh my word y’all, Karissa Vacker, is the narrator and she is amazing. She has become one of my favorites. She is perfect for Vivvy and I loved her voice for Jesse. This lady can make any book outstanding!
