Book 5 of a series. Can be read as a stand alone. Will go back and read earlier books. Great characters. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book

I enjoyed this book, but I didnt enjoy it as much as the previous Helen Lavery books.

Here she has to find out who is behind a mass shooting.
Then she has to get ready for a trial against an organised crime book whose nephew befriends Helens son.

I found the duel stories didn't keep me interested, and it didnt grab me. this is the first time I considered not finishing a book especially by an author I love.

The characters were ok, but I didnt really connect with any of them.

I would recommend it to anyone who loves Police Procedurals. but I was disappointed

Explosive..
The fifth entry in the DCI Helen Lavery series of thrillers arrives with an explosive storyline and a tension fuelled plot. A mass shooting brings abject terror to the town whilst the DCI is also preparing for the trial of an organised crime boss. As questions abound, grudges become apparent and answers are sought, Helen finds herself racing against the clock to survive. With an edgy narrative and a plot populated with a well drawn and credible cast, this is a worthy addition to the series to date.

This book 5 in the Helen Lavery series and I have read and enjoyed them all and this was no exception. I was gripped from the first page with the fast paced storyline and believable characters. I just love Jane style of writing and I couldn’t ad the book quick enough. Although book 5 it can easily be read as a standalone but better to read from the beginning to get the background. I can’t wait for the next book.

I do like a good book series and this is a very good book series and the latest instalment did not disappoint. In this 5th book featuring DCI Helen Lavery we find her investigating a mass shooting incident. While such events are fortunately fairly rare in the UK I’ve seen enough news reports of them to say that this feels shockingly real. We get a mix of the home life as well as the working life of Helen and she has a lot going on in both. I particularly like that the characters all have an authenticity to them. I won’t say I worked out who the shooter was but rather that my guess proved right. This is a great addition to the series and I hope there’s more to come. Read this as a standalone if you must but ideally read the rest of the series first.

This is the 5th book in the Helen Lavery series I have read them all and was looking forward to this one.

This book did not disappoint.
Fast paced and gripping from the beginning.
Helen works with the counter terrorism team to help solve the crime whilst we also learn more about her family life.

I love this series and whilst this is the 5th book it can be read as a standalone.

In the Shadows follows DCI Helen Lavery working alongside the counter-terrorism unit investigating a mass shooting in the quiet town of Hampton. Helen is also preparing for the trial of Chilli Franks, an organised crime boss who holds a long-standing grudge against Helen and her family. Is Chilli somehow involved in this latest case?

The book starts with a bang and is pretty fast paced throughout. I enjoyed the main storyline and also thought there was just the right amount of the detective’s ‘personal life’ storyline too. The plot is well worked with enough twists and turns to keep me guessing and the characters believable.

This is the fifth book in the DCI Helen Lavery series, but the first I have read. It was obvious that there was some back story, but there was enough in the book so that I knew what had happened without having read the other books.

I will definitely check out some of Jane Isaac’s other books after reading this.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

It's a busy night at O'Malley's pub in the town of Hampton, where they are hosting a reunion disco for some old school friends. At the end of the night, as everyone is preparing to leave, Ashleigh and her friends Nia and Cass step out of the pub and all hell breaks loose when shots are fired. DCI Helen Lavery and her team begin investigating the shooting which has left five people dead and many injured, but who would open fire on these innocent people, is it a terrorist attack as those above Helen seem to think, or is it someone in the criminal world that Helen is already acquainted with?

In The Shadows is the fifth in the DCI Helen Lavery series and, as I've mentioned previously when reviewing this author's work, her books are fraught with action from the beginning each one with a plot as exciting as the last, and this one is no different. Isaac puts pen to paper and her characters come to life across the pages, as real as you and I, and the connection between characters and reader is remarkable. The plot is well crafted, delving into the murky world of criminals from all walks of life. It's a fast paced story that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout, wondering how this terrible ordeal would end for those involved, with a great reveal at the end. As with all this author's police procedurals this one can easily be read as a standalone, but to gain insight into the characters backgrounds, they are better read in order.

I'd like to thank Legend Press and Netgalley for inviting me to read this, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.

This is one chilling read, it’s awful to think that it could happen near you. Very cleverly written, fast paced and enjoyable. Helen really is up against it this time, and without a lot of support from her usual team. Coupled with the fact her son has become best friends with the nephew of a notorious criminal, her home life isn’t easy either.

I raced through this and just loved it.

My thanks to Jane, the publishers and Netgalley for the ARC.

I enjoyed this book. It’s well-written and has believable characters. This is the first book I’ve read in this series but was still able to understand the dynamics of the characters. The story moved quickly but with enough detail to make me want to find out what happened.

In the Shadows is the fifth instalment in the DCI Helen Lavery series, and from the very beginning you are plunged right in at the deep end with a horrific attack about to take place on a group of unsuspecting Friday evening pub-goers engaged in some dancing and letting loose at O'Malley's DJ night in the small Midlands town of Hampton. Unfortunately, it doesn't take long before the streets are soaked indiscriminately in swathes of blood. The townsfolk and the police are equally in shock and naturally, a full-scale investigation ensues with counter-terrorism and mass murder teams both conducting investigations in their relevant fields. Could this be tied to a past case of someone both Helen and her detective father put away behind bars for many years thanks to his nefarious gangland and underworld activities or is this something far more ideologically-orientated altogether?

Using a potent mix of compulsive main investigative plot, internal police politics and updates from Helen's family life, Isaac has once again shown herself to be at the top of the police procedural game. From the outset, I found this difficult to put down despite having to to carry out everyday tasks, however, even while carrying these out, I felt myself thinking about how long it would be until I could wind down, relax and race through many more chapters. There is never a dull moment throughout - quite a rare accomplishment - as in each of the pacy chapters, each formed of merely a few pages, you can rely on at least one significant event to progress the narrative, so there was never a lull, and this kept it exciting. Twisting, immersively written, top-notch crime fiction with a likeable and humble protagonist at its centre. I'm already eager for the next instalment! Highly recommended.

From the very first page of this book, I was stunned, mesmerised. Written with a ferocious passion that'll knock the wind out of you!
I’m so sad it's over. I could have read another sixty chapters . . . A fantastic read!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thank you NetGalley and Legend Press for the eARC.
I was so excited to read the new book by one of my 3 favorite authors, she's up there with the best as far as I am concerned!
DCI Helen Lavery is preparing for the trial of an organized crime boss, when a horrific shooting takes place outside of a pub. Possibly 5 are dead and the shooter has disappeared. Rumors are that the crime boss is involved and Helen works alongside the Counter Terrorism Unit to find the culprit and the reason for the shooting.
Every time I finish one of Jane Isaac's books I think it's her best, as is the case with this one! Highly recommended.

This is another good read by the author in the DI Helen Lavery series. The plot is well thought out as it opens with a mass shooting at a local pub and the fast pace continues throughout. I really like the characterisation, very believable at times. There were plenty of surprises as the team try to find the person responsible and counterterrorism teams become involved. I liked the insight into Helen's personal life too. I would recommend the read to lovers of the genre. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
