A great read into the history of comedy. This book is a perfect gift for your friend who loves to make you laugh or the devoted SNL watcher.

There is a lot of great stuff here--funny anecdotes from Keegan-Michael Key's own sketch comedy journey, actual history of sketch comedy that stretches beyond the 20th/21st century, and little blurbs from other big names in sketch comedy (think Bob Odenkirk, Laraine Newman, and of course, Jordan Peele). A lot of this stuff is great!
The book in general though, has some flaws that I think would be remedied had I listened to the audiobook version instead of reading a physical copy (another note--this is similar to like a textbook/coffee table book in that there are blurbs and interjections throughout, which really messed with the digital formatting, so I'd recommend either the physical book or audiobook). For one, there was a lot of "they can't do that! That's not done!" interjections from Key himself--I think listening to this would've been more impactful. Reading it over and over again? Not so much.
In general, I'd encourage fans of sketch comedy to read this one, but if you don't reaaally have a big interest in it, it's probably one you can skip.

If you enjoy sketch comedy,, and especially the humor and style of Keegan-Michael Key, you'll like this book. The authors are very knowledgeable and present the information with great timing. While Elle Key co-wrote the book, it sounds like the voice we're used to from KMK.

This is a fun and fast-paced book. That being said, this is a huge undertaking, writing a history of sketch comedy and not making it so big you can't pick it up. So it's understandable that a lot gets left out, or only briefly touched upon. That's my only disappointment - not enough sketch comedy!

My thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The thing I loved the most about this book was how I could completely hear Keegan-Michael Key's voice the entire book, and I am definitely not mad about that. I didn't care so much about the content of the book, I mostly picked it because of KMK.

Thanks, NetGalley!
