I love how this has been designed for eReaders. Even showing you how to edit something if you don't know how to. This goes into the history of Runes and the runic languages amazingly, meaning your getting a background on the magic your learning, this is giving you more of an understanding of the magic.

I love the layout but found it hard to find what I needed in the digital format. This is something I will be getting in print! I love this and find that this is a brilliant addition to the different layers of magic. It gives spells and readings an additional boost.

A wonderful book for beginners as well as people who have had an interest in runes for a while and know the basics. Wayne Brekke covers the history of runes, how to use them for divination, how to cast runes, and the different ways you can apply them in your everyday life.

3 stars.

If you’re interested in runes and are learning or looking to learn how to read them, then this is the book for you! Inside you will find a pretty good guide covering everything from the known history to the guide itself. I took a class on runes last year, and I think this is a great supplemental book to go with what I learned in that class. It also appeals to my love for learning history because the opening covers what is known about the history of runes as well as the differences between the Elder and Younger Futhark.

All in all, I found this to be a pretty good guide. I like that it also encourages one to make their own rune set if they wish, but it also teaches about what types of rune sets to look into based on your needs and how you plan on reading them. I also like that it teaches the multiple ways one can work with runes, which isn’t just about reading rune sets. I think this is an excellent book for beginners as well as people further in their rune journeys.

Very detailed, especially on the history of runes. A good book for a serious student but far too detailed and precise to hold the attention of a beginner.

I was intrigued by the description and wanting to learn more about runes. I knew it was a spiritual book more than it was a fact filled book about the history of runes, although there was supposed to be a fair bit of history added in.
The parts I liked about the book were the notes on how to use the ebook with highlights and all that, and the authors suggestions on how to integrate these tools in learning from the book. I also liked the look of it, there were a few pretty pictures and the theme throughout fit the theme of the book. The last parts in the book that went into deeper information about each rune, and the further information pages were also really cool to have.

However, the writing bugged me a lot. There is flow, but there is also so much repetition throughout the book. You read one sentence about one thing, and two, three sentences later, you get the same information again. This continues all throughout the book, and it needs a lot of editing to get that in order.
Same problem with the information categorizing, while the last part about each rune was well done, the first parts were very confusing as it went from history to something modern, back to history and I thought I'd accidentally gotten mixed up in the app and went back only to find that no, it's the book that's repeating information and not going in a chronological or other logical order. This sadly happened multiple times.
I also had issues with the lack of fact checking, and the lack of explanations on things. For example, it was stated that runes where used thousands of years ago, and there were different kinds of runes, all used differently. Then it was stated clear, multiple times throughout the book, that runes were never used as the book wants to teach the reader to use them. Ultimately that makes the book quite useless then if the uses of runes it teaches the reader is just a modern invention that has no real connection to past usage.

I gotta say, I felt a little cheated at that, since I did put my time in to read it, but it kept repeating that it's just a modern invention. While that might be true, for a book trying to teach a technique that has "roots thousands of years back", maybe continuing to mention that it's just a modern thing isn't the best approach to making anyone believe or even want to put their time into it.

Last but not least, I really wanted to have some references in there. If you state things as facts, you should refer these facts to where I can read up more about them. There was a huge lack of explanation about things that bugged me.

All in all, in the state the book is now, the only thing I would recommend it for is to read about each rune itself. The rest of the book needs a lot of editing.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. There is just something about learning the lore and use of Runes. Each one is a little different and how it works for the people who add to the spiritual practice. This book gave me some information that I had not really thought of. That was picking the right set of runes. When I was younger I made my own by drawing the symbols on rocks. I like how it explains each rune and how it fits into the casting process. I will definitely be looking back at this for reference as I need it.

The Complete Guide to Runes : An Essential Reference for Runelore, Meanings, Divination, and Magic is a comprehensive guidebook perfect for beginners. The meanings of the runes, rituals and readings are covered, along with how they can be used. The author also includes information on the history and origins of the practise. It is an interesting book that would make a lovely gift.

Did I come here with only the fleeting hint of the word and knowledge of "runes" that came from reading Harry Potter? - I sure did! 🙃

However, upon reading, I now realise that I've heard about runes in several other places without even knowing it.

This is a really fascinating beginner's guide to runes. I had no idea they were so deeply entwined in Norse mythology.

I'd like to get my hands on a printed copy to fully enjoy the information and visual aids, unfortunately the e-copy doesn't play well with any of my devices, but I enjoyed it all the same.

Mystical and magical, the Complete Guide to Runes is a treasure; it covers all the meanings and discussion around runes that many beginners will find worth their while. Additional, it discusses when runes are used in rituals and ceremonies, tracing its history back centuries and centuries, so a win-win for a history buff.

I can recommend this book for beginners, but if you'd like more background and history, I would suggest you expand your rune literature beyond just this book.

This book is really a treasure. It covers all the meanings and usual discussion on runes that beginners and really anyone can gain insight from. Moreover it has a series of rituals actually using the runes in ways that are simple but powerful for improvement, healing, and protection. Mr Brekke has written a nicely illustrated and usable book for those who love the runes and rune magic.

A great little beginners guide. I've read books on runes before and most were more complex.
Here everything is laid out in a simple and easy to understand way. The author gives lots of historical tidbits without overwhelming the reader. The runes are categorized and shown in a table, where it's easy to look up pronunciation, meaning, reading suggestions and more.

I can recommend this book for beginners, but if you'd like more background and history, you might want to move on to other rune literature.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

As someone who has never read a book about runes, this was a wonderful beginners book. This book goes over the history of runes, their use in divination, how to cast runes, and ways to apply them in your everyday life. While this is a lot of information for a newbie, Brekke does a wonderful job at presenting the information in a simple, easy to read manner that really made learning about runes fun.

With each rune, Brekke provides a pronunciation guide, alternative names, how it sounds, how it's translated, and keywords associated with the rune. I really love when information is broken down in sections like this because it makes a great way to reference this book as a beginner. As someone who has never used runes before I am very excited to pick up a set and try them out now. If you are looking for a beginner book on runes, I highly suggest picking up this book.

I have never really been that well-educated on Norse Mythology, so when I got a chance, I grabbed it (the book I mean).

The book, as the name suggests acts as an end-to-end guide for beginners. As a #newbie I knew nothing more than Thor and his Hammer when it comes to Norse. The book gave me details from where it supposedly began, the 9 worlds and their significance, important character introductions and dwelling deeper into its language transformations.

Once the base is set, it then takes you through a course-like structure around each alphabet/ rune in Norse and then a further explanation of how they work, their grouping patterns, usage and magical abilities.

I was so taken by this whole concept that I did a bit of my own research and notes taking on the topic. It was nothing less than captivating. I am also inspired to read the book that is like the base of it all (The Elder Edda / The Poetic Edda).
