Scala picks up almost directly after the events of book 1. I had a hard time getting back in the the world of the Angelbound series. I'm not sure if it was because its been a while since I read the first book but I struggled. We don't meet too many new characters in this book, so everyone feels very familiar.

The author does narrate and while she did a way better job narrating than in the first Angelbound book, she's still not my favourite narrator. I found that the narration made Myla seem younger and very immature, when in fact she's 19. I think I will pick up the ebook version of the next books because I need to see what's next for Myla!

Same characters but with all new roles since Myla has become The Great Scala. Still loving this series. The characters are starting to really get their feet under them. There is something about having a title that makes a person feel that they have worth.

unfortunately I had to quit this one.
i did not read the first one and had great struggles understanding anything.
the pacing was way to fast for me and the characters were too many. The plot seemed to go everywhere. Lost souls, magic power stolen and a demonic wedding. And all of that in heteronormative hell.
This plus the many mistakes the author/narrator made in the audiobook just threw me off.

Oh, Lady Adair, what have you done. This was a great story, I love how Christina Bauer is able to tell the story with enough detail that you could picture purgatory and yet manages to keep the story moving at a quick pace. I am very interested in reading the next book in the Angelbound Origins series. I need to know what happens in Acca! I was just looking at Goodreads and noticed that there are three more series taking place in this world. Looks like I have a lot of reading to do.

Here's hoping that Christina continues to records the books in audiobook format.

Overall, this week was fine for his complaints, but I was mostly bore through a good chunk of it

Entertaining to a certain extent, but I don’t think for me

as much as I loved Angelbound. I just didn't connect to this one as much. I was ready to fall back into the world and it was rough to reconnnect. I'm going to try again when i'm in a different headspace.

A great second book. I like that the story continued almost straight from where the first book ended. I like that we had the same familiar characters and we didn’t have to spend a lot of time getting to know everybody.
I struggled with the book at the start though, because I felt it was not really getting anywhere but it quite quickly started to get better.

I didn’t much like the narrator. I felt like they were a bit too theatrical with the narration and the accents and voices were not to my tastes.

All in all, this book was great and I enjoyed the ending and the book a lot

Really enjoyed rereading this book. I read the ebooks for this series awhile ago and I’ve been enjoying listening to the audiobooks. The narration is fantastic! Highly recommend

I haven’t gone back and got hold of the first book in the series, which probably I should have. But Bauer has done a good job of giving sufficient information so I didn’t flounder at any stage.

Like other audiobook fans, I have strong preferences regarding narrators. And sometimes, they are a surprise. Like Bauer, for instance. She has a strong American accent and is quite idiosyncratic in her delivery – not generally elements I enjoy. But as the author, she also delivers the first-person viewpoint with absolute conviction and enjoyment that drew me in and took me with her. Whether it’s intended or not (I’m thinking it probably is…) the contrast between the gritted seriousness of being the final arbiter of souls that will endure for the rest of eternity and the bouncy girlishness of a slightly immature nineteen-year-old is quite funny. Before my teenage grandsons came to live with us, I’d have said that Myla doesn’t sound nearly mature enough to be convincing as a nineteen-year-old. But then, I’ve currently got an eighteen-year-old living under my roof – and he can one moment be extremely mature and responsible. And the next, he’s locking horns with his thirteen-year-old brother and acting the same age…

Myla, most of the time, makes the right decisions. But her immaturity does surface and her chatty sharing of her emotions gives this one a YA feel. However, the stakes are high and the story certainly isn’t held back in any way by her occasional wobbles in situations that would probably floor someone twice her age. What I do feel she has going for her is that forward momentum the young and fearless can possess, particularly if that strategy has been successful for them previously. And from what I can gather about her past life, that’s the case here. I’m conscious that I’ve made this one sounds as if it’s allll about Myla’s own personal tussles with what is going on around her – and this book is nothing of the sort. It’s packed with intrigue, crisis and interesting plot twists delivered with a bouncy style I found increasingly appealing. I particularly liked the fact that Myla has a really hard time killing someone.

The inevitable romance is sweet without being too sugary, or too graphic, or impeding the ongoing adventure. To the point that I was really invested in it when that mattered to the story – and that’s a whole lot harder to achieve than Bauer makes it look. In short, I’m delighted that I’ve found an enjoyable angels vs demons series to tuck into – because I definitely want to revisit this world. Highly recommended for fans of otherworld fantasy adventures. While I obtained an arc of Scala from the publishers via Netgalley, the opinions I have expressed are unbiased and my own.
8/10

An intriguing follow-on from the first book, with the return of all my favourite characters and some of my definitely not-so-favourite characters. Like all good books, this one has a villain and whilst it might be one you’d expect it’s certainly not in the way you’d expect it. Due to some clever (but really quite stupid) machinations, an old rival is fighting Myla on several fronts and it’s all very sinister. With the same humour, and steely determination, Myla and her friends and family work to win the battle and it’s plenty of fun watching them do it. This book has enough twists and turns to keep it interesting and it’s good to see a little more of Myla’s dad and her angelbound love, Lincoln.

I received a free copy of this book. All views are my own.

This is the third Christina Bauer book I've read and I really enjoyed it. Scala is the second book in the Angelbound Origins series. This book smoothly continues the story from Angelbound and follows Myla as she starts her work as the Great Scala. I loved the fast pace of this book. It hit the ground running and never seemed to stop.
What I didn't like was how few new characters were introduced in this. We didn't really meet or get to know anyone. The characters we did see a lot of didn't show much development. I'm hoping to see more character development in the next book. Otherwise this was a really enjoyable book and I'd recommend to fans of ya fantasy.

Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Scala is the second book in the Angelbound Origins series. I did not read the first book and still greatly enjoyed this book. This book not only explains a lot of the events in the first book in great detail to catch you up, but it explained it in a way that made me want to read the first book. For example, it was described that the main character Myla defeated a demon named Armageddon to free her father. That sounds badass and awesome.

This book follows Myla’s troubles in becoming the Great Scala. The Great Scala is the one who determines what souls in purgatory go to heaven or hell. There is a problem and Myla would only be able to send souls to hell. She has to find out what is causing this, fix it, fight for her life, and her right to be the Great Scala.

From start to finish I was entertained. I love the magical atmosphere and characters. Even without the first book I still was attached and loved all the characters. That’s a testament to how great Bauer’s writing is.

I recommend this book, but I recommend you do what I am going to do, and that is start at the beginning.

First off, I would like to thank Netgalley for allowing me to listen to this book as an audiobook for a review.

Scala is the second book in the Angelbound series. In comparison to the first audiobook, I think Christina Bauer shows her development of storytelling.

The first book was long and felt slow at times, but this one didn't, making it much shorter and easy to listen to. One of the things I look for in audiobooks is the ability to jump in and out of the story, due to having to stop the narration to do other activities. Scala was very much ticked that box due to shorter time, and less world-building; which is due to how much information was packed in the first.

Fun!!
This is book 2 of the Angelbound Origins series and I loved seeing these characters have further adventures.
I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed the narration by the author. She brings such life to the characters.
Only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is I figured out the "bad guy" and because the audio had some issues. Several parts repeated like it was missed in the editing process. Took me out of the story, so to speak.
The story itself tho, really good and I will definitely continue the series.
