I loved this story, it's gritty, pointed, and razor-sharp. The perfect blend of 'HELL YEAH!' and 'oh god no' story telling. On the strength of this book alone, I'm pre ordering all of Chuck's work.

This was my first ever attempt at ‘reading’ an audio book and I have to say, it wasn’t half bad. Only downside is that I don’t retain as much information as I would reading text on a page and I have the tendency to have moments of total loss of attention( adhd) and don’t want to go real listen to the same thing over again as my brain thinks that it has already heard it all.
Now the narrator himself was ok, but not really my favourite to listen to. I loved Chuck Tingle’s story though! It was as if you mixed the Purge with Walking Dead but only for one night and instead of committing any crimes you wanted to, straight (sexual preference) people became psychopaths and only LGBTQIA+ people remained themselves. The concept was really fun and highlighted the real dangers that the LGBTQIA + people face on a regular basis in an exaggerated way well providing lots of comedic relief!

Short, quick, and entertaining enough to keep me listening. It's like the Purge but with a different twist. But at least on the Purge people knew to be prepared, the lack of preparation in this book was a little frustrating at times. But at the end of the day it's for entertainment, so don't think about it to much.

I honestly didn’t know that Chuck Tingle was an erotic author when I requested this on Netgalley.

Well, Chuck Tingle can write more than just erotica. This was fantastic. It gave off LGBTQ Purge dystopia vibes. It’s short, eery, and well-written. The audiobook narrator was perfect. Loved it!

One night a year, all the cis, straight people turn into violent zombies. This year, Isaac and his friends plan to hide out in a remote desert location to avoid the chaos. But of course, things don't go as they planned

I loved how quickly and effectively the world building happened with the scene with Isaac's elderly neighbor. I wish the characters had been a little more developed, but that's a common issue with novellas. The message at the end was a little heavy-handed, but overall it was a super fun horror with a message. It left me even more excited to read Camp Damascus when it comes out.

I'll be honest. I was expecting a lighthearted and dumb book. Good, but dumb. Why did I think that? Because Chuck Tingle is the authors of such modern day classics as "Bigfoot Pirates Haunt My Balls." So I thought I was getting more of the same, just with a horror tone.

Nope.

What I got instead was a premise that may sound a bit far fetched but it delivered on something truly amazing. Yes, this book is like the love child of The Purge and 28 Days later, but gay, which does sound like a Chuck Tingle book. But there so much to unpack in the 127 page novella (or 3h 32m for audio).

Not only does this book tackle allyship and how some people are allies in name only. But it also tackles the lack of care and empathy for the LGBTQIA+ community. AND because we're not done here, and it tackles the selfishness of people who were able to yet did not get the COVID vaccine.

But Bill, you may be saying. All of that in 127 page? Yes.

I want to read this again. I want to enjoy this for the first time again. I want to be amazed at how layered the book is and how so many good messages are placed in a horror story that could easily have been just dumb fun. Thank you Chuck Tingle and thank Net Galley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review. I'm going to go buy this now.

If you have known for 364 days that there is a chance that all CIS/straight will turn into rage-filled zombies for 24 hours and kill all LGTBQIAs and you DO NOT PREPARE, yes I will be frustrated.

The author acknowledges that there will be frustration with the characters, who “stop for a drink,” have no supplies, no gas, no weapons, and no plans for safety except playing Boggle. It was hard for me to let it go.

First this was not what I was expecting for a Chuck Tingle book. There was no weird smut at all, but the story was really good. A horror story of a group of people trying to survive a zombie invasion.

If straight people becoming zombies once a year, a gay militia, and playing RuPaul as a tactic to save yourself isn't the best thing I have listened to this year, I don't know what is.

This may not be for everyone, but it was definitely for me. The narrator was the PERFECT choice, Andre really sucked you into the story from the very beginning. To have such an impact with an 84 page novel, it's hard to find complaints.

This was my first Tingle, but definitely won't be my last. This was done so well, and the messages interwoven (like a place to battle and a place to compromise....over cookies) stand out so clearly

This was delightful. My first time reading from Chuck Tingle and while I guess this came out in 2021, the audiobook is about to be released and I was able to get a copy for review. Straight is a well-executed horror comedy with social commentary and now I'm even more excited for the forthcoming Camp Damascus.

This is a very entertaining horror novella where a cosmological phenomenon causes an outbreak that only affects cis straight people- causing them to become mindless zombies one night a year and violently attack anyone who is LGBTQ+. After the devastation this caused, a vaccine was developed that supposedly helps. But of course not everyone agrees to take it and not everyone is eligible. The novella begins on the eve of the third Saturation event and follows a bisexual man escaping into the desert with a group of friends in search of safety. But of course, nothing is so simple...

I thought this was creepy, funny, and clever. It originally came out earlier in the COVID pandemic and part of it is clearly touching on the culture wars about vaccination, but also gets at some of the nuances of issues within the queer community. Things like biphobia and transphobia among people who should realize we're all in this together. Or allies who are really only there when things are easy and their own safety isn't on the line. There were scenes and moments that had me laughing out loud, but there's also zombie and slasher type violence that leans into camp. I would definitely recommend this. The audio narration is also great. I received an audio review copy via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

"STRAIGHT" by Chuck Tingle is a novella, so in audiobook format, it is a quick three and a half hour listen. Despite it's short length, this story is a fabulous listen which horror fans will thoroughly enjoy.

Issac is a bisexual man who is living in a future dystopian Los Angeles, a world that is different than our current reality.

Set in the third year since the first "Saturation Day," Issac and three queer friends have made plans to leave the city for the duration of that year's Saturation Day. They are heading deep into the desert to avoid people, hopefully entirely.

So, what the heck is Saturation Day? Well, for some reason, once a year all cisgender (straight) people are overcome with hatred towards anyone who is part of the LGBTQIA2S community. That hatred causes them to attack and kill any queer person they come into contact with.

I love the premise of this audiobook. "Straight" is a mixture of David Moody's "Hater" and Robert Kirkman's "The Walking Dead."

If you are a fan of horror, you should enjoy this audiobook. The narrator does a fantastic job of keeping pace with the escalation of violence, while also using inflection and tone to engage the reader's attention.

I rate "Straight" as 4 out of 5 Stars. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I would like to thank Netgalley for providing me with a free advance copy of this audiobook.

Omg. I have read some chuck tingle books before. But this one was amazing! PURGE WITH A TWIST. Not what I was expecting based on past reads but it was great!

Straight by Chuck Tingle is a quick, but rather deep horror novella. This story follows four LGBTQIA+ friends that are heading to Joshua Tree to try to evade being attacked on the dreaded Saturation Day...the day when all cis-het citizens suddenly want to violently attack the entire queer community. Think a selective Purge mixed with current political and social issues in our world. There is plenty of zombie-esque content in this novella, but also some very relevant conversations about ally-ship and the queer population. The narration for this audiobook was perfectly emotive with good pacing and tone.

All in all, a satisfying story. I look forward to more horror tinglers from Chuck Tingle.

So, I really love what Tingle is doing with his horror writing. Using homophobia as the horror is great.

I liked this one more than I liked Camp Damascus. It was a really intriguing premise, that one a day a year all the cis-het folks basically turn into homophobic zombies.

I won’t go into it too much, as it was a short book and I don’t want to spoil anything. This absolutely hit all the horror marks, plus has some fantastically critical things to say about allies (will I ever be able to say that word without immediately hearing Imogen from the Heartstopper show saying “I’m not homophobic, I’m an ally”???).

Anyway, very well done, definitely enjoyed.

This was fantastic. This was first released in different formats in 2021, but this is my first experience with the book.

It's a very fast listen as it is a novella, but the narration sucked me right in. I enjoyed the narrator so much. He did great job capturing the characters and expressing the dire situations they were in.

This story felt like a mix of the purge and station 11. A virus specifically targets straight people and can cause them to be violent against the lgbqt community one day a year. A vaccine is available and mandatory but not everyone elects to take it. So a group of friends people try to isolate away from most people in this day, but of course it runs amuck.

This is a story of a community coming together and supporting eachother and that advocacy of more than just what you say. It's also thru you actions.

Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for this advanced audio copy. My review is voluntarily my own.

Thank you Net Galley for this advanced audio reader copy. This unfortunately was a little to out there for me, which is saying a lot for me. I think Chuck should stick with romance.
