It was insightful to read about just how authoritative and strict of a Brahmin Shankar's father was. However, after a quarter of the way in, the book lost its essence. There was hardly any or zero mention of Durga and the book just became about grandpa reminiscing his past with his grandchildren. The whole cycle of telling stories became very repetitive. Some of the stories were interesting but Shankar's life and reflections of his present life became stagnant. His story only picked up at the end, which I felt was left too late.

Night Jasmine Tree

In 1950s India, a Brahmin college student wanted to marry a fellow college student from a lower caste. Rejected from his family because of this, the pair wed and immigrated to the United States. After successful careers and assimilation in the U.S. they retire and spend time with their grandchildren. The grandchildren are entertained and enlightened by stories about the old country.

Tales of the love of family, tradition and culture are shared with the young people. When a letter from India arrives, a decision must be made-do they regain contact with the man’s sister or not?

This multicultural story within a story is a good read that offers insight into India’s caste system.

Beautifully written, relatable stories that cross cultures and timelines. I had next-to-no knowledge about Indian culture and the caste system, so this was eye-opening.

For me, a good book makes you think about it when you're not reading it -- this was one of those books. Heartfelt and touching.
